About the Author
Michael Farris is chairman and general counsel of the Home School Legal Defense Association and chancellor of Patrick Henry College where students are trained to impact the world "for Christ and for Liberty." He is a constitutional lawyer, a leading pro-family activist on Capitol Hill, and an ordained minister whom Education Week named among the "Top 100 Faces in Education." Farris and his wife have ten children and ten grandchildren.

The Bill of Rights: A Christian labor of love

This is a well-researched and well-written book about the genesis of the Bill of Rights in the United States. The author deserves a lot of credit for writing this book, and I highly recommend it, especially for young people, and those who espouse the cause of religious liberty. The author traces the genesis of the Bill of Rights all the way to William Tyndale's efforts to translate the Bible into English in 16th century England to allow common people the opportunity to read the scriptures for themselves, long before the Enlightenment movement took shape. The author follows the history of the Protestant Reformation, the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church during the reign of king Henry VIII, subsequent evolution of different Protestant denominations on both sides of the Atlantic, and the unfortunate conflicts which erupted at times in wars such as the Anglo-Spanish war of 1585, and the English Civil War 1642-1651. It is sad, but instructive, to note the history of persecution perpetrated by temporal powers against many individuals and or denominations for their beliefs. The evolution of the Protestant denominations was carried from the shores of England to the Colonies, which became later on the United States, an evolution that was influenced both by the events, developments, and laws of England, and the new environs, developments, and the people of Colonies. The author devotes a good portion of the book to the developments in the United States, and the influence of the activist preachers and schools such as the College of New Jersey, known now as Princeton University, and early scholars/preachers such as John Witherspoon. James Madison and many other future leaders of the United States were educated at Princeton. The author also traces James Madison family tree to William Tyndale in England. However, it seems that Madison was perhaps more influenced by his education at Princeton, and the developments of the War of Independence, the quest of dissenting denominations for religious liberty, and the necessity of establishing a Federal Government in the United States. Initially, Madison felt that the Constitution was sufficient; however he changed his mind and pursued a Bill of Rights as a supplement to the Constitution in 1789. A House-Senate conference approved the Bill of Rights on September 24, 1789, and sent it to the states for ratification. On September 25, 1789, the US Congress approved a resolution to ask President George Washington to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts, the many signal favors of Almighty God. Washington signed the first proclamation for thanksgiving to God on October 3, 1789.
As we enjoy the fruits of liberty in this great nation, it is imperative to recall that this liberty originated primarily from Christian beliefs. It is indeed a precious gift and labor of love bestowed upon us, by many generations of Christian believers who devoted time, effort, and even their very lives to achieve liberty.

Roots of individual liberty

Any student of history or politics should want to explore the roots of America; and those roots are religious in nature. We didn't suddenly spring up in 1776, full-blown in our philosophy of government. What we built in the way of Constitutional government was a necessary product of our past, and of lessons hard-learned, at great cost of life and liberty. The Enlightenment was in full swing, the Age of Reason was upon us, but our common experience, our moral compass, was the Bible - whether you like that or not really doesn't matter. To be intellectually honest, we must consider why we formed ourselves into a nation the way we did; why we structured the Constitution the way we did; why Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both believed that this nation could not long survive without a strong moral and religious (specifically Christian) underpinning; why checks and balances resulted from a consensus among our founders that man, by nature, is evil and not good. There's a reason for their thinking, and this book explains it.
But why Tyndale? Wasn't he just a translator of the Bible? (You may want to read Tyndale's 1528 book, "The Obedience of a Christian Man"). Why Madison? Wasn't he just one of many men working on the Constitution? Why the Bill of Rights? Weren't we already protected by checks and balances? What did the English Book of Common Prayer, and the Great Ejection of 1662, have to do with driving us to explicitly protect religious liberty and individual rights? What did the religious wars of Europe have to do with establishing an American nation where church and state were separated? Everything.
This book does an excellent job of going behind the American Tapestry to look at the threads that comprise it, threads we've been removing out of ignorance. The American Tapestry is a picture of liberty, protected by the Constitution as our founders intended it. Our protections against government have not become stronger for our reinterpretation of the Constitution, but weaker. This book identifies the threads that held it together at the start, threads that were woven in a historical setting. This nation was a product of its times, yes, and we need to understand those times. But the reasons and causes for its unique design were responses to our human nature, not to the historical setting. FDR was wrong when he said the Constitution was useful in its time, but no longer applies in an Industrial world; he claimed that, as designed, it was somehow inadequate. Human nature doesn't change, and so our protections against that nature must not change. But they have changed, and we need to know why this trend must not continue if we are to ensure religious, economic, and political liberty for our children - and those three things are related. This book may help you understand why that's true.
As you've probably experienced, many histories are dry and uninteresting. They leave out the motivations and the dangers facing real people in real circumstances. They focus primarily on external events and dates, and leave out the heart of the actors. Not this book. Mr. Farris has written it clearly and engagingly, so it will be easily absorbed by high schoolers and above. It sparks the imagination, and it challenges the intellect. I think it's both thoughtful and thought-provoking.
Its notes are extensive, though pushed to the back of the book, which I find cumbersome, but it gets the minutiae out of the way. Unfortunately, it has no Index for later reference. It's a hard-bound book, with an excellent binding, using what appears to be acid-treated paper. That means it won't go brittle - but only time will tell. And it's VERY reasonably priced. I highly recommend it.

A gift

I bought this book for myself and wound up purchasing it for several adult members of my family - the author has done extensive research for this historical book - it is not for the faint-hearted reader - I am re reading it as there so much to absorb in history of religion...well chronicled and documented I have used text books and history to cross reference questions I had in my own mind - I have to add that as a genealogy buff this book makes clear why ancestors left certain countries and ventured to the new world and why and how important Madison was to having religious freedom in America - I highly recommend this book for home school and home libraries -
