We Remember C.S. Lewis is a collection of essays, memoirs, and letters contributed by some 30 people who had contact with Lewis or are familiar with his work. Most of these essays first appeared in various issues of The Canadian C.S. Lewis Journal and together constitute a sequel to Stephen Schofield's In Search of C.S. Lewis. Contributors vary from former pupils to letter correspondents to his gardener Paxford (who was the model for the character of Puddleglum in The Chronicles of Narnia.)
The format is similar to the reminiscences of James T. Como's C.S. Lewis at the Breakfast Table. Included in the essays is a piece written by Lewis himself entitled "What France Means to You." It originally appeared in a French Journal during World War II and now is published in a book for the first time.
For readers of C.S. Lewis, this volume will further enhance their enjoyment of his writing. For those unfamiliar with Lewis, this work provides an introduction to the man and some of the things in which he took interest, for which his lucid and insightful writing found full expression.
About the Author
David Graham is a surgeon and a contributing editor to The Canadian C.S. Lewis Journal. He has published a book of essays entitles Thoughts Along the Way. He resides in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Good, but not very dynamic

Intrigued by the look and feel of the book, and by a few of the essay titles and their authors, I purchased this book. I was hoping for an enjoyable collection of personal observations on Lewis' life, illuminating his character and how he lived out what he believed. There was a fair deal of this sort of thing in the book, but not near so much as I had hoped, and a lot had been said before, or wasn't even all that fascinating.
Overall, I enjoyed this read for the happy moments when I learned something new or charming, but other books on Lewis have been much more substantial and endearing than this one. I particularly recommend Terry Glaspey's biography of Lewis: _Not a Tame Lion_.

Like a brownie: hard to resist one last crumb!

I've always been a bit surprised and suspicious of the C. S. Lewis industry: the fact that I like reading Lewis, doesn't mean I like reading about him. (Though, if push comes to shove, I have to admit I do. Just no slobbering, please.) Fortunately this is a collection of essays by colleagues, students, and friends of Lewis who, even while writing about Lewis, have other things on their minds -- the purpose of English teaching, Oxford, redemption, even (in the gardener's case) his own bad jokes. There are even a few critical stories. Most of the essays are well written and insightful, and gave plenty of Boswell-like anecdotes not only of Lewis, but of other peculiar denizens of Oxford as well. Graham could have saved himself the occasional bone thrown to evangelicals, though, as far as I'm concerned. I really don't care how Bob Jones reconciles the work of the Holy Spirit and beer. Billy Graham and J. I. Packer didn't seem to have much to say. Also, the editor protested a bit too much about "hero worship." There's no need to apologize for this book, otherwise.
The book arrived in the mail on Friday afternoon. By Saturday afternoon I was chewing on crumbs.
To me, one of the most interest comments was the suggestion by one writer that Lewis had been influenced by the marvellous chapter "The Ethics of Elfland" in G. K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy. I am beginning to suspect that Wilhelm Grimm was a very clever, and also successful, evangelist, and that there might be a secret link between the Seven Dwarves and Trumpkin.

Remainders?

I will read just about anything by or about C.S. Lewis, and if you're like me, you will want to read this book. However, to me, with a few exceptions, the articles were more like remainders that were rejected for a better book, mostly by folks who knew him briefly.
Then there is an annoying introduction as well, written in defense of having an interest in C.S. Lewis against those Protestants who would see it as (the dreaded Roman Catholic tradition of) hagiography, or even possible idolatry! Oh, please! This only shows once again why fundamentalists (and certainly Evangelicals) both want to claim Lewis as their own and yet are uneasy with him- he isn't Evangelical in the American sense, certainly not a fundy, and "what if he distracts us from Christ?" (The short essay regarding Lewis and Bob Jones gets to this point rather well.)Well, it would seem to me that the Great Tradition of the Faith always used to regard honoring other saints as giving honor to God in Christ, in Whom they are sanctified. But that isn't so common in Fundamentalist and Evangelical circles. And curiously, the essays in this collection are not entirely positive about Lewis. There are some rather harsh recollections (which I appreciated), so go figure why the introduction was deemed so necessary.
