content matches the title

some odd 25 years ago i took an undergraduate course in physics based on the 3 volumes of Alonso-Finn "Fundamental university physics".
Keen to brush up on my rusty knowledge of classical physics i've been browsing the market searching for a present-day introductory university course on physics. This book more than fulfilled my expectations.
It's comprehensive, concise, well-structured, a joy to read, and above all, from an educational point of view, the best book on physics i've ever read. It's so easy as a student to get the wrong conceptions in your head, and once they're there, they usually stay there for a very long time. Richard Wolfson brilliantly avoids this pitfall - he knows exactly where students are likely to misinterpret certain equations or ideas in physics, and he does a splendid job making sure the students get all "the big ideas" right from the start.
I would not only recommend this book to students of physics, but to everyone interested in the most beautiful of all sciences. If only there were more educators the likes of R. Wolfson.

First of all, let me mention that I am a tutor for physics at my college with a major pertaining somewhat to physics. Too often, this textbook does not give proper background for students to actually learn the material. It's fine if you already have a good background in physics, but this textbook is highly inappropriate to use to teach it to students for the first time. While the formulas are normally presented alright, there's rarely an actual explanation of what it actually means. In math-based sciences, each formula is a form of mathematically-based sentence with something important to say. Too often, I've had the students I've been tutoring be completely lost as to how to interpret an equation, or even stuff as basic as which number corresponds to which variable.
Volume 1 begins by introducing Newtonian physics - force and motion basically. It starts off easy enough to understand but begins to lose the essential conceptual information a few chapters into it. One thing that's of paramount importance in teaching a math-based science course such as physics is a proper correlation of what the different variables describe (such as how to distinguish which of 5 measurements of distance goes in the place of which variable). Not even halfway through the book, the provided information is insufficient to properly understand what a situation is describing much less to be able to solve a problem. Though the information is essentially correct, what soon becomes lacking is a student-leveled explanation to prepare the students for the more difficult concepts and equations.
Volume 2 becomes even worse as the included topics are much less familiar to most students taking this course as an introduction to physics. Topics included are electromagnetism, optics, and "modern physics" such as relativity and quantum mechanics. This textbook begins with one of the more difficult concepts, Gauss' Law, in its second chapter. While there is explanation on how to use the equations provided, there is very little to actually say what the math is describing. As a science course, this is sadly nothing but a failure when it comes to teaching students. What makes this more difficult as well is that students not familiar with integration must suddenly know how to set up an integral from a word problem without explanation on what constitutes an integral which will actually be able to be completed with the provided information.
If I were to read this textbook without my background in physics, I would probably have about a 15-30% level of understanding based on this textbook. What I am not saying is that the course is of too high a difficulty level, but that the information provided makes this subject be many times more arduous than is necessary. I have seen much better explanations offered by a UT Arlington professor which does provide background, and grade information provided from both courses concerning the same topics appear to show a much lower level of understanding when this textbook is the primary source of information and explanation.

Just not helpful

Physics is hard no matter what textbook you use, but this textbook is not cohesive. The examples are not helpful and do not help to solidify the concepts taught in each chapter. I would recommend that students who are required to purchase this textbook to also purchase a supplementary text because, from experience, I know that this text was not enough to teach me physics in an easy and efficient manner.
