About the Author
Marvin Olasky is professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin and editor-in-chief of World, AmericaÕs fourth most-read newsweekly. He is also a syndicated columnist and a senior fellow of the Wilberforce Forum and the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Washington Post, Fortune, National Review, and many other leading publications. Olasky is the author of fourteen books, including The Religions Next Door and Monkey Business, and a graduate of Yale University (B.A.) and the University of Michigan (M.A., Ph.D.).

A Christian's look at other religions

"The Religions Next Door," by Marvin Olasky, is not a text in comparative religions, nor is it intended to be. Such texts, which generally adopt as neutral a stance as possible (although, having examined a number of comparative religion texts in the course of trying to find complementary material to my area of primary teaching expertise in the philosophy of religion, I have found that not all of them are consistently neutral), are appropriate for a comparative religion course. Olasky's is not. It is a self-consciously Christian perspective on the other religions of the world, in particular, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Not surprisingly, since Olasky comes to the subject matter from an admittedly Christian perspective, he evaluates and criticizes those religions from that perspective. Although this may not make for impartial and balanced reporting, it serves its purpose for Olasky, which is to provide a reason to prefer Christianity to these other religions.
If there is a criticism to be made of Olasky, it is that his analysis of the major religions of the world is not in depth. At times, he is superficial and does not probe in the depth one would expect from a reasonably scholarly endeavor. Rather, he often paints a picture with large brush strokes, ones that sometimes obscure the purpose and meaning of a particular practice or belief.

Plain Talk

I purchased this book to get a glimpse of each of these religions and how they differ, Admittedly I knew more about Judiasm than the others. Still I had not realized the extent of persecution they have endured. This book is written in easily understood fashion and I aplaud the author for not trying to brow beat his readers with scholarly and uppity importance. How nice to pick up a book on Religion and know that readers would not have to have a degree to understand the information.

A must-read!

A must-read. For all genuine thinkers, that is. Olasky shames the politically correct who aren't willing to look beneath the surface at hard issues rooted in religious beliefs. Theological differences even within a cultural group drive conflicts unacknowledged by mainstream media, reporting from their own bias. As those who consume what media and reporting dish out, discernment comes only by understanding the complexities within these differing religions. Olasky does this remarkably well in this book, which is why this is a must-read for people who want thoughtful engagement in the cultural world around them. I read Olasky's "The Universe Next Door" and thought it too was excellent. It spoke more to the options/choices in personal belief. This book, however, is more relational--what drives others actions, helping the reader understand another's underlying belief system--crucial because of our globalization. I just hope that somehow, Olasky's recommendations at book's end will be taken to heart, and that individuals in culture, and we, in our sphere of influence, would become more thinkers rather then reflectors of other people's thoughts.
