This text may have been required by the course I took, but it is a low quality test written in the obscure, academic way that gives textbooks bad name. It takes an interesting subject and makes it boring.

About the Author

Harvey Gould uses molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods to study glasses, the dynamics of first-order phase transitions, and other problems in statistical mechanics. His work involves the application of computer simulation algorithms as well as renormalization group and cluster methods. Gould recently co-authored the second edition of an undergraduate level text on computer simulation in physics. He can "foresee the day when physics students take a required computational science curriculum comparable in scope to the present day mathematics curriculum."

Gould is a native of California and received his B.A. and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He did postdoctoral work at the National Bureau of Standards and taught at the University of Michigan before coming to Clark University in 1971. His leisure time is spent with his family and listening to music, especially jazz.

Makes Physics a pleasure

Excellent, outstanding book for clarity, elegance, writing style and level of detail. This book won't leave you alone on the intricacies of marrying physics and computer programming and will make your programming activity more intereesting if you are more of a programmer and you physical studies more rewarding and less
"pen-and-paperlike" if you are an aspiring physicist. In fact I highly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in how nature works and in playing with computers. The extreme clarity of this book makes it accessible to junior colege students and even to advanced, motivated high school students or for self study. I would have preferred to see the example code in the book
in C or better C++ but using BASIC has the advantage of making the book more esy to read and is just sligtly annoying for the
C++ or Java programmer. ( Are there any other kind of real programmers? ;) Just make sure you master your language enough to make calculations, use functions, and are able to produce at least some basic graphics (using C++ and openGL or DirectX would rock). Judge by yourself, but I would buy without a thought a book whose first chapter is on the "Coffe Cooling Problem".

very good introductory computational physics book

This was my first comp. physics book and it was easy and

very instructive. I can assure your money is well spent.

If you find this book too easy, then you should move on to

Thijssen's Computational Physics which is intended for the

`graduate' level readers.

Only 4 stars (not 5) because I don't think that the codes

provided in the book are that useful. Everyone has different

coding style. What really matters is the physical concepts and

not the numerical receipes.

Pretty good introductory book

Good introductory book on Computational Physics.

Projects proposed cover different difficulties so it can be used for college students at all levels.Concepts are well explainded. Introduces areas including linear and nonlinear systems, normal modes and waves, and electrodynamics. This second edition offers expanded material on chaos, complexity, and quantum mechanics, programs with more use of graphics, and appendices on Fortran and C.

Easy to Use. Skips a lot of stuff.

After just finishing a one-year study of James, using 5 different commentaries extensively, I found that Richardson's commentary was very useful expositional commentary. There are some sections which are really good, really enlightening, and relatively thorough (although his goal in this commentary was not to deal thoroughly with every nuance of the text). However, other sections, for no identifiable purpose, he simply fails to comment. I found this extremely frustrating, but I could work through it. His introduction to the book and his exposition of the middle of chapter 1 (enticement by his own desires) was particularly helpful and well written.
Nevertheless, because of the inconsistency of his commentary (spending tons of time on one portion of a verse and literally ignoring another) makes this one of my least favorite of my acceptable James commentaries. In my opinion, you may want to look into Moo's (0802800793), Kistemaker's (0801020808), and/or MacArthur's (0802409008) Commentaries.

some odd 25 years ago i took an undergraduate course in physics based on the 3 volumes of Alonso-Finn "Fundamental university physics".

Keen to brush up on my rusty knowledge of classical physics i've been browsing the market searching for a present-day introductory university course on physics. This book more than fulfilled my expectations.

It's comprehensive, concise, well-structured, a joy to read, and above all, from an educational point of view, the best book on physics i've ever read. It's so easy as a student to get the wrong conceptions in your head, and once they're there, they usually stay there for a very long time. Richard Wolfson brilliantly avoids this pitfall - he knows exactly where students are likely to misinterpret certain equations or ideas in physics, and he does a splendid job making sure the students get all "the big ideas" right from the start.

I would not only recommend this book to students of physics, but to everyone interested in the most beautiful of all sciences. If only there were more educators the likes of R. Wolfson.

First of all, let me mention that I am a tutor for physics at my college with a major pertaining somewhat to physics. Too often, this textbook does not give proper background for students to actually learn the material. It's fine if you already have a good background in physics, but this textbook is highly inappropriate to use to teach it to students for the first time. While the formulas are normally presented alright, there's rarely an actual explanation of what it actually means. In math-based sciences, each formula is a form of mathematically-based sentence with something important to say. Too often, I've had the students I've been tutoring be completely lost as to how to interpret an equation, or even stuff as basic as which number corresponds to which variable.

Volume 1 begins by introducing Newtonian physics - force and motion basically. It starts off easy enough to understand but begins to lose the essential conceptual information a few chapters into it. One thing that's of paramount importance in teaching a math-based science course such as physics is a proper correlation of what the different variables describe (such as how to distinguish which of 5 measurements of distance goes in the place of which variable). Not even halfway through the book, the provided information is insufficient to properly understand what a situation is describing much less to be able to solve a problem. Though the information is essentially correct, what soon becomes lacking is a student-leveled explanation to prepare the students for the more difficult concepts and equations.

Volume 2 becomes even worse as the included topics are much less familiar to most students taking this course as an introduction to physics. Topics included are electromagnetism, optics, and "modern physics" such as relativity and quantum mechanics. This textbook begins with one of the more difficult concepts, Gauss' Law, in its second chapter. While there is explanation on how to use the equations provided, there is very little to actually say what the math is describing. As a science course, this is sadly nothing but a failure when it comes to teaching students. What makes this more difficult as well is that students not familiar with integration must suddenly know how to set up an integral from a word problem without explanation on what constitutes an integral which will actually be able to be completed with the provided information.

If I were to read this textbook without my background in physics, I would probably have about a 15-30% level of understanding based on this textbook. What I am not saying is that the course is of too high a difficulty level, but that the information provided makes this subject be many times more arduous than is necessary. I have seen much better explanations offered by a UT Arlington professor which does provide background, and grade information provided from both courses concerning the same topics appear to show a much lower level of understanding when this textbook is the primary source of information and explanation.

Physics is hard no matter what textbook you use, but this textbook is not cohesive. The examples are not helpful and do not help to solidify the concepts taught in each chapter. I would recommend that students who are required to purchase this textbook to also purchase a supplementary text because, from experience, I know that this text was not enough to teach me physics in an easy and efficient manner.

Mr. Trent's message isn't new, but I like the idea of basically 'baby steps' to get some change going. He makes reference to some other leadership type books that I want to now read, like Guilani's "Leadership". I like that he made it story like with examples... following Jesus' lead in getting points across :) Definately worth the read, and easy reading too :)

Want to understand REAL Authority?

If your spiritual life needs a `booster shot', you can't go wrong with a powerful work by Adrian Rogers. If your spiritual life needs `major renovation', Rogers also has that covered. In fact, if I were to be so bold, Roger's book "The Incredible Power Of Kingdom Authority" could best BE described as two books in one (2002, Broadman & Holman Publishers, 214 Pages).
Rogers, known for his pastoral leadership of Bellevue Baptist Church, and the "Love Worth Finding" ministries, supplies that needed shot in the arm to those who may feel that they are at a standstill in their lives. His book also does not candy coat what one needs to do to refine their lives for Christ, thus the work comes at you with a one-two combination.
This is not one of those `finish in an afternoon' books on spiritual development. This book WILL force the reader to confront some very real and personal issues concerning biblical principle and one's walk with their Lord, their spouse, and their church. Rogers applies the scalpel of the Word to those areas of life that some has overlooked, or neglected. It is a book that will serve the pulpit and the pew very well.
Let's fess up at this point. There have been a host of books filling the shelves of many a bookstore, even Christian bookstores. However, it is rare that a book has the clarity, purpose, and passion to deal with the real issues of life. If one does not understand authority, or how they should act in the presence of authority--let alone the authority they have in the Christian life--they will become unworthy to represent the kingdom, or themselves.

This is an excellent book for beginners interested in spiritual authority as provided by the risen Lord Jesus Christ. However, coming from a Baptist background, Rogers does not develop the authority believer's have in Christ by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. What I mean to say is the reality of the presence of God by the Holy Spirit is almost entirely non-existent in this book as it is in most churches today and hence, in the lives of most believer's today as well.

Incredibly easy to learn from

I took summer courses in introductory physics over the summer, and the two volumes of this book were the prescribed textbooks. Never have I found it as easy to learn material from a textbook as with these two books. Most everything is explained in a clear manner (even if some figures are a little confusing), and mathematical justification is given for most of the claims in the book. It's also good about making sure you get the right idea of what's being learned right off the bat, introducing vectors and light calculus usage early. Honestly, I think these books even helped my understanding of Calculus grow, and I've already taken several upper division math courses. I would highly recommend these volumes (or, if they ever come together in one book, that) to anyone looking to learn introductory physics.

An "OK" Physics Textbook

It's very hard to find a "good" physics textbook that explains concepts easily. This is not one of those books. Although the concepts are explained, expect to re-read things over and over again until you finally sort of understand what is going on. This book was required by my university so I had to buy it. I would have preferred a different one.

David S. Dockery is President and Professor of Christian Studies, Union University. He has written and contributed to many articles and books and is the founding editor of the Criswell Theological Review. He and his family currently reside in Jackson, Tennessee.

David Alan Black currently serves as Professor of New Testament and Greek at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. A Valuable Introduction to New Testament Interpretation

Interpreting the New Testament Text
Black & Dockery

This is a very good introduction to a wide variety of issues related to the interpretation of the New Testament. The topics range from methodology: textual criticism, source criticism, and form criticism etc. to issues such as background studies, the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, and the utilization of modern linguistics in biblical interpretation. There are also useful summaries on interpreting the Pauline Epistles, The Gospel of John, The Book of Revelation, and other New Testament books. The authors represent the best in New Testament scholarship – names like Darrell Bock, Scot McKnight, Thomas Schreiner, and Gary Burge to name a few.

Overall, this is a very helpful book and makes for a nice read for undergraduates and seminarians. The authors hold to a high view of the Bible and make many insightful comments. For example, the authors point out that one can benefit from many of the critical and literary interpretative methodologies if one uses discretion and is careful not to imbibe unbiblical presuppositions (cf. Darrell Bock for example).

Worst Textbook EVER

This has got to be the worst textbook I have ever had the displeasure of having to study by. The chapters have no logical flow (the authors sell it as "self-contained chapters"), the problems make no sense, and the answers to the end of chapter products are wrong as often as they are right. I honestly learned a few concepts presented here better from Lehninger's Biochemistry.

If your professor is making you purchase this textbook, reconsider him as a teacher.

TERRIBLE book

P-chem isn't exactly an easy subject in the first place, but this book just makes it even worse. Several of the answers throughout the book are WRONG, many explanations are long and drawn out but without real substance, VERY easy to miss extremely important theories,symbol meanings, exceptions, etc, etc.

I guess the book might be ok for someone who basically already KNOWS P-chem in and out. But for a first P-chem book this is terrible, I hate to say. Most students, and even my instructor hate this book, but they have no control over what the university requires as far as books. Yet. I have no alternatives, but I would do alot of research if you have a choice as to what book you can use. hopefully you'll have an understanding instructor.

Disappointing mashup of Engel & Reid "Physical Chemistry"

I am a physical chemistry professor and used this text in my physical chemistry for biochemistry majors class. While this text is titled "Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences" by Engel, Drobney & Reid, a close comparison with Engel and Reid's "Physical Chemistry" shows that a very large portion of the material is lifted straight out of the latter text. Some extra effort has been made to make some aspects more relevant to students oriented toward the life sciences, but it's generally tacked on here and there. It could not be otherwise when so much of the text is a direct copy for the more general book by primarily the same authors. The thermodynamics section is acceptable, and this is where the life science applications show their value. The chemical kinetics treatment was good as well. However, the quantum chemistry chapters are disastrously bad. Here, to cut down the treatment for life science students, the material in the original text was chopped down noticeably, BUT NOT RE-EDITED for content clarity or good sense. It's still the same text from Engel & Reid, but with missing sections. Hence, concepts appear without introduction, and the clarity descends from typical p-chem text (generally a tough slog, but that's the nature of the topic) to butchered p-chem (Ugh). It really made for a horrid second class (the quantum portion) for my students, and I will not select this text again.

The solution manual has all the typical problems--an annoying number of incorrect answers and sometimes, the method for solution is wrong. This is unfortunately all too common in many texts, as most authors relegate this task to somebody else.

A children's picturebook about the true meaning of Christmas

Josie's Gift is a children's picturebook about the true meaning of Christmas. Beautifully illustrated with museum- quality artwork by Frank Ordaz, the story is about a young girl whose father died a year ago, and who hopes to receive a beautiful blue sweater as a Christmas gift. She years for it, thinking that having it will fill the void deep inside. Her mother teaches her that "Christmas is not about what we want. It's about what we have." But it's not until a family with a baby comes by in need of shelter that she remembers what the Christmas nativity display really means. By giving her blue sweater to the baby, and giving thanks to God and Jesus, she feels full once more. "For Christmas, she knew, wasn't about what she wanted. It was about what she had, deep down in her soul that only God could give." A profound and heartwarming story meant to be shared with the whole family during the holiday season.

Frank Ordaz's Illustrations

Someone had told me that Frank Ordaz was painting beyond the trilogies of Star Wars and Indiana Jones for George Lucas, and was illustrating chidren's books. I went to his website and found my likeness and his dear friend's darling children circa 1985 in this publication. His friend died shortly after it was painted suddenly from a heart attack. I found this book on Amazon and bought it, and it was delivered on a day after having some dark truths revealed to me...just days after a heartfelt petition for revelation. Well, needless to say I was overwhelmed in great sadness, yet thankful that God answers prayers quickly. This book is not just a lovely Christmas story to me. It is a reminder of loss, rejection, poverty, death, birth, that is far more important to give than to receive, and ultimately that it is essential we display the fruitages of God's spirit (Galations 5:22,23) because that is truly the best gift. It also symbolizes in my heart and mind that it is very important to have a partner in my life that cares about my soul, like someone special in my life did in 1985. Hindsight is always 20/20. I will cherish this book the rest of my life and it will serve as a reminder that if something seems too good to be true, that is because it isn't true at all.

A Sweet Christmas Tale

Josie's gift is sweet story aimed at a little girl's temptation toward self pity. Without forcing the issue, Josie herself is moved to pity another, and so learn to give. The artwork is excellent and it should provoke good conversation, especially among little girls (4 to 8).
The surprise in the story's a bit contrived, but, that is the case for most children's books, that is the only reason it rates a 4 not a 5.
