Believing God, by Beth Moore

“Is it working? Your belief system, that is. Is it really working? God’s intention all along has been for the believer’s life to work. From divine perspective toward terrestrial turf, God meant for his children to succeed. . .

Are our Christian lives successful? Are they achieving and experiencing what Scripture said they would? In a recent sermon my son-in-law preached, Curt told us the only way we were going to impact the world and the next generation is to prove that our faith in Christ is real and that it works. For countless Christians I’m convinced it’s real. My concern is whether or not we have the fruit to suggest it works.”—Beth Moore; Believing God

From Publishers Weekly
Best-selling author and Bible teacher Moore, staunch Texan that she is, uses all her homespun charm and folksy anecdotes to convince Christian followers to throw off their characteristic unbelief and start "believing God." Moore is bent on proclaiming a message of renewal and spiritual combativeness against the defeatism so common in today's churches. With her typical can-do style, she energetically espouses that the main reason God has kept his believers on earth after their conversions is so they might "succeed" in the here and now. Why then, are so many Christians living lives of mediocrity? Quoting Hebrews 3: 19, Moore says the primary reason is "unbelief." She uses the biblical Joshua's story of faith, belief and courage to admonish contemporary Christians. Moore also presents a five-point system to stimulate the weak-kneed to victory, encouraging readers to speak the following statements aloud throughout the day: "God is who He says He is. God can do what He says He can do. I am who God says I am. I can do all things through Christ. God's Word is alive and active in me." Bible study enthusiasts will flock to this newest offering from Moore, a popular author with a sterling reputation. But while biblically accurate, much of the book is wordy and repetitive. A little restraint might have given this garrulous resource the zing it now lacks.

Written with immense security and propelled by Sandra Burr's outstanding reading, Beth Moore's new audio gives her fans yet another nuanced and powerful lesson on how to connect with God. Her unabashed devotion to God is in high gear. Even with Burr's balanced narration toning this down, the emphasis is decidedly on letting go, letting God. The bold faith Moore advocates is tastefully supported by biblical passages, but it has enough personal stories to make the audio more universally human than religious. Few teachers and writers have this author's grace when it comes to explaining that unfettered belief in God's love and benevolence is the only effective path to the life we deserve. Another Amazing Study!
By Fairburn Resident
I've been a part of a few Beth Moore Bible studies through my local church, but I'd have to say that this is my favorite. In many ways, Beth teaches a lot of basic truths that will really help new believers, but she also delves into some amazing depths to fuel the fire for those who have been in the faith longer.

What a blessing!
By Amazon Customer
Believing God sounds like such a simple proposition, but I struggle daily to find my "mustard seed of faith". Thank you, Beth, for giving me real tools to exercise my faith not just on the really good days or really bad days, but every single day!!! I'll never move any mountains, but I am certainly not afraid to ask God to move one for me now because God is who He says He is, God can do what He says He can do, I am who God says I am, I can do all things through Christ, and God's word is alive and active in me....and I remind myself of these truths every day! Thanks for delivering such a profound, life saving message in a practical way that I can comprehend and apply to my life.

Fresh Fruit in Season and out of season
By Diane Johnson
I just finished this study on the Fruits of the Spirit. Beth writes with depth and understanding. The study guides can be used with the DVD lessons. I didn't have the video lessons, but was able to download the Viewer Guide answers on the LifeWay website. Her Bible studies can be done as a group or independent study. This one I did on my own through the summer months. I really enjoy Beth's writing style and have done several of her Bible studies. I especially like how she weaves the Hebrew or Greek language into the lessons.

Theology of the Reformers, by Timothy George

First released in 1988, this 25th Anniversary Edition of Timothy George’s Theology of the Reformers includes a new chapter and bibliography on William Tyndale, the reformer who courageously stood at the headwaters of the English Reformation. Also included are expanded opening and concluding chapters and updated bibliographies on each reformer.

Theology of the Reformers articulates the theological self-understanding of five principal figures from the period of the Reformation: Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, Menno Simons, and William Tyndale. George establishes the context for their work by describing the spiritual climate of their time. Then he profiles each reformer, providing a picture of their theology that does justice to the scope of their involvement in the reforming effort.

George details the valuable contributions these men made to issues historically considered pillars of the Christian faith: Scripture, Jesus Christ, salvation, the church, and last things. The intent is not just to document the theology of these reformers, but also to help the church of today better understand and more faithfully live its calling as followers of the one true God.

Through and through, George’s work provides a truly integrated and comprehensive picture of Christian theology at the time of the Reformation.

A great look at four heroes of the faith
By James Lane
Timothy George is founding dean and professor at Beeson Divinity School. He has also been a pastor and editor of numerous Christian magazines. Currently he is executive editor of Christianity Today.
It was a refreshing change to read Theology of the Reformers. George comes to the subject as a Christian. He does not fudge difficulties presented to believers, but, as we shall see, seeks to assist in our growing in faith and knowledge of God through the reformers.
George moves from the familiar to the unfamiliar in that most theological students have read biographies of Luther, Zwingli and Calvin, but probably not Menno Simons. The chapter on Menno Simons, then, is couched in a familiar setting which presented me with some quite new and challenging material.
The basic aim of this book is to bring out the emphases in the theologies of these four reformers. In being faithful to this aim, George has assisted in breaking down a number of myths commonly held about the reformers. For example, rather than Calvin being a melancholic and unemotional theologian, he is shown as a pastor who (page 212) "...was frequently called on to counsel those Protestants who had been imprisoned for their faith and who often faced imminent martyrdom." A quick scan of the footnotes between pages 238 and 246 will show that Calvin greatly drew on the Pastoral Epistles to shape his theology.
The key phrase used in the four main biographical chapter headings are something that won't easily be forgotten by most readers: "Yearning for Grace: Martin Luther"; "Something Bold for God: Huldrych Zwingli"; "Glory unto God: John Calvin"; and "No Other Foundation: Menno Simons". These chapter headings are tied in with major threads of each of the respective reformer's theologies, and could be used as mnemonics for subsequent reflection.
All four reformers are presented in a sympathetic light. However, George doesn't shirk from showing the reformers belligerently holding on to their divisive approaches to the sacraments, when compromise (or at least temporary concession) may have been better for the church at large. Whilst not misrepresenting the unique perspectives of each reformer's viewpoint nor espousing a "facile ecumenism" (page 316) George proposes a way forward of sorts in his final chapter The Abiding Validity of Reformation Theology namely, to hold to the essentials but continue to promote the importance of the sacraments.
Regarding this final chapter, Baker (Baker, J.W. (1991) Theology of the Reformers (Book Review). Church History 60, 387-389.) asserts that George "...may have exceeded the reach of his study". I do not agree with this statement for the following reasons: first, given the overall fine quality of the book and George's extensive experience in the pulpit, lecture hall and editor's desk, he is qualified to provide guidance in applying the knowledge he has gleaned from the reformers discussed; second, given the importance of the topic (i.e. the way forward for unity among Christians) it is warranted that George contributes to resolving the schisms that past doctrinal differences have caused.
George's description of the disagreement between Luther and Zwingli (along with a number of associates) at Marburg was quite moving. He brings home to me the lasting importance of unity within the Christian church and the need for flexibility in the face of military backlash (cf Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).
Should this book have been aimed at theological students, it seems odd that German, Swiss, Dutch and Latin phrases are documented so precisely whilst New Testament Greek (a language of considerable usage by three out of four of the reformers studied) is only touched on thrice (pages 241, 293 and 257), and then only as transliterations. On page 70 George points to a "Greek verb", but fails to mention which verb he is referring to. On the other hand, a sound knowledge of Latin seemed to be assumed by the author throughout. In many theological colleges, such as BCV (Australia), Latin is not taught, but Biblical Greek is. For this reason it seems hard to justify "ordo salutis", for example, not being mentioned in the glossary, nor explained in the passage (page 270). It would be helpful to have a copy of Muller's Dictionary of Latin and Greek Theological Terms handy when reading a book such as this (Muller, R.A. (1985) Dictionary of Latin and Greek Theological Terms: Drawn Principally from Protestant Scholastic Theology. Grand Rapids: Baker Books).
Further to the level the book is pitched at, note that in Baker's review of this book he says (in connection with his usage of the book for an undergraduate Reformation history class) "...it was clearly a challenging text for some of them". So, if it is pitched at a high level, why all these other European languages and so little Greek?
Perhaps a good introduction to the subject would be to read McGrath's Reformation Thought first (McGrath, A.E. (1988) Reformation Thought: An Introduction. Oxford: Basil Blackwell). Similarly sized, it takes a more thematic/topical approach than George's, which is more biographical. McGrath has a similar sized glossary, but it includes less non-English words. It is interesting that McGrath only mentions Menno Simons twice in his book. This is not to say that George could be criticised for placing the obscure Menno Simons next to the renowned Luther, Zwingli and Calvin. As I noted previously, there is value in moving from the familiar to the unfamiliar. As is the case with reformation studies, and doubtlessly so many other historical subjects, the amount of repetition in what is published is enormous. The chapter on Menno Simons is a welcome addition.
There is a need for this book in that short biographies are used to explain reformation theology, which may otherwise be quite dry to the new reader. George certainly achieves his aims in this book. The lives and theologies of the four reformers are well elucidated. It is well written, easy reading, yet deep enough and applicable to modern thought and practice (I say this in connection with the discussion on the Marburg Colloquy above).

Reformation Theology Appetizer
By William Turner
Timothy George develops a great introduction to the theology of the four most influential reformer's during the Protestant Reformation. The first two chapters set the stage by giving a detailed description of the late Middle Ages.
The third chapter is dedicated to the life and works of Martin Luther and catalogs his pursuit for the doctrine of grace. The next chapter sets forth the life and works of Huldrych Zwingli and gives an excellent summary of the Marburg Colloquy. The fifth (and longest) chapter is on John Calvin. George spends time dealing with his Institutes of the Christian Religion but also delves further into the broad plethora of Calvin's writings. The sixth chapter gives a summation of Menno Simons and adds a new appreciation for this often misrepresented and underrated reformer. George concludes with a chapter on the relevancy of studying Reformation Theology.
This book is a great introduction that will leave you wanting more. No doubt after this is read the reader will find himself digging deeper into the Theology of the Reformation.

Relevant Historical Theology
By Philip Thompson
George's Theology of the Reformers explores the history and theology of four key reformation leaders: Luther, Zwingli, and Menno Simons. The writer displays the personal challenges and struggles of each of these men and the resulting impact on their faith and theology, for it is their theology that bears great impact on the theology of Christians today. As George himself states, "for those who stand committedly within the Christian tradition, it is a matter of genuine concern to understand what was so decisively at stake in the great debates of the Reformation" (7).

George's introduction to the work itself as well as to the historical and theological setting of the Reformation is very insightful. These first 38 pages take the reader through the milieu of the Renaissance and Reformation era. George points out that the Late Middle Ages was an era of "decline, disintegration, and decay" (22) which drove many to anxiety and on a search for meaning. In this quest, many sought to gain insight into the true meaning of the church (30-40) and to probe deeper into theology (40-49). These currents converged at the right time to birth what we know now as the Great Reformation.

To Luther, George devotes 57 pages as he outlines his journey towards justification by faith alone. The writer debunks some misconceptions of Luther as he details the Reformer's quest for truth. One poignant statement regarding Luther was of great significance to this reviewer. George states that Luther's theology was "a life-long process of struggle, conflict, and temptation" (61). Luther did not just arrive at the conclusions of the 95 Theses or suddenly become struck with the doctrines of faith, grace, and Scripture alone. Luther was, admittedly, a work in progress. The Reformer's theology of Salvation, Predestination, Scripture, the Church, and the State are examined and George concludes: "Luther's true legacy is his spiritual insight into the gracious character of God in Jesus Christ, the God who loves us and sustains us unto death and again into life" (106).

The "third man" of the Reformation, Huldrych Zwingli receives a total of 56 pages devoted to his life and theology. Zwingli is portrayed as a free-thinker, who arrived at conclusions on his own and debated them vigorously. He debated with the Catholics and began the reformation of Zurich. He debated the Lutherans and separated over the sacraments. He debated with the Anabaptists and supported their extermination. The aggressive man is portrayed by George as "a pastor, and a patriot, a theologian, and a politician" (111). After reviewing the progress of Zwingli's theology of creation, providence, Scripture, traditions, piety, the state, and the sacraments, George states, "from beginning to end he was single-mindedly concerned to uphold the sovereignty of God and to rout out every practice which encouraged placing of one's trust in the creature [rather than in the Creator]" (160).

John Calvin, the theologian of the Reformation receives a greater amount of discussion (89 pages). After attacking some of the faulty perceptions of Calvin, George lays out the history and theology of The Theologian. The impact of Calvin's vocation and family is discussed and the writer stresses that Calvin was no ivory tower theologian, but ministered as part of a family with a wife and children (183-184). George also devotes some time to surveying the works of John Calvin and describing their impact. Some material in this section is a little dated, but is of great help nonetheless. After examining Calvin's theology of God, Christ, sin, salvation, faith, prayer, predestination, grace, and the church, George concludes by describing Calvin as a humble man who served as a light in darkness to point others to God (246-249).

The last Reformer, Menno Simons, was a member of the Radical Reformation and is described by George from time to time as the "odd fellow out" (303) of the four reformers chosen for the purposes of this work. Albeit, 56 pages are devoted to the little-known Anabaptist reformer whose tradition is preserved to this day in the Mennonites and whose theology, in part, in the Baptists. Simons is portrayed as a pastor who cared for a flock in tribulation. As a radical reformer, Simons did not share in the position and protection of the prior three reformers. Instead, Simons experienced a life of suffering as he developed his theology. His theology was always in tension with the more radical elements of his sect such as the Munsterites (256-257) and with the Protestant reformers (270-272). After reviewing the scant history of this reformer, George summarizes his theology of salvation, Scripture, Christ (including a fair treatment of one of Simons' more bizarre views in this area), the church, and the sacraments, George points out that "other Anabaptist leaders...may have surpassed Menno in theological depth and originality. Yet no other reformer embodied so fully... "the Anabaptist vision." Nor was any other Anabaptist as successful as Menno in transforming that vision into an enduring tradition" (303).

George's masterful conclusion ties together the, albeit disjointed, legacies of these reformers and applies their significance to the Sitz im Leben of the evangelical church today. Fittingly, George argues that "The abiding validity of Reformation theology is that, despite many varied emphases it contains within itself, it challenges the church to listen reverently and obediently to what God has once and for all said...and once and for all done in Jesus Christ" (310). George's helpful perspective on such a challenging and significant period of history will prove immensely helpful to the student of the history and theology of the church. Although George's perspective is decidedly Baptistic and Calvinistic, those of other denominations and creeds will, no doubt, find the work to be insightful. The writer portrays the reformers with all their warts and foibles, but masterfully challenges the reader with each of their strengths.

A must read
By David E. Prince
Dr. Tom Nettles and Russell D. Moore have edited a wonderful volume on the true glue that holds Baptists together and that is theological conviction. The list of contributers is a veritable "who's who" of Baptist theological conservatives. The contributers span from the U.S. to Wales to Zambia. They reflect the theological diversity that is found among conservative, confessional and committed Baptists. They are pastors, scholars and lay people. The men and women in this volume stand in the tradition of their Baptist forebearers, committed to God's inerrant Word and the doctrines contained therein and willing to suffer for those distinctives they find in the Bible that makes them Baptists. I would implore every Baptist to read this book and rejoice in the true glue of theological conviction that holds us together as Baptists. I would also encourage every non-Baptist to read this volume for an honest understanding of what is at the core of what it means to be a Baptist Christian.

Celebrates our Baptist faith and heritage
By Amazon Customer
A book of testimonies by various Baptist leaders, both past and present, on our common faith and heritage. Sadly, Baptists are often known more for our traditions and emotional revivalism than our deep theology, but this book shows there are indeed many biblical, theological, and historical reasons to celebrate being a Baptist. Some great chapters, though the book could probably have been titled, "Why I wish I was Presbyterian, but the Bible's teaching on believer's baptism would not let me."

Personal Narratives are Not Helpful
By J. Tomes
This book is not an apologetic for Baptist doctrine and distinctives. Instead, it is a series of short essays from various Baptist persons that amount to nothing more than personal conversion narratives with different doctrinal emphases. The authors do nothing more than state their position. If asked why they hold the position, "because it's clearly taught in Scripture." There is so much repetition in this book and no real argumentation. This book comes of as triumphalistic. It is profoundly unhelpful. On the other hand, it is exactly what it says that it is. If the Baptists are truly facing an identity crises (and they are) then they should (and could) have produced something weightier. How are personal narratives supposed to aide with this crises? Ultimately, Why I am a Baptist does not answer the questions that the reader is asking, it merely gives a few reasons as to why the individual authors are Baptists. The reader doesn't need to know why the writers are Baptist. They need to know why the position is (or isn't) true.

Worst book binding ever encountered
By A Mature Reader
This is a fine reference for Hebrew Bible verb parsing, but the book binding is absolutely terrible. The book does not stay open and the pages fall off when one tries to keep it stay open. A new and better binding edition (possibly hard cover) is sorely needed because this book should serve as a lifelong companion to the Hebrew Bible for non-scholars to read the Old Testament in the original language. Rating of the book is the average of 5 (for the content) plus 1 (for binding) divided by 2 equaling 3 stars.

Addition to my previous comment.
Be aware, Buyers! I have contacted the publisher about the poor quality biding problem, and they don't care about the concern. You may be spending more money than bargained for, because of the problem, if you want to keep using the book - I did!

A Challenge to a Greater Love
By Kathi Macias
Honest. Moving. Poignant. Heart-wrenching. All these describe the stories contained in A Special Kind of Love by Susan Titus Osborn and Janet Lynn Mitchell. But nothing describes those stories more clearly than the word challenging.

From the agony of a mother sitting beside an incubator watching the life-and-death struggle of her tiny newborn, to the outrage of parents over the hurtful taunting of their "different" child by "normal" children, to the indescribable grief of a father watching his child's casket being lowered into the ground, these true-life stories will challenge readers to a greater depth of love. While offering practical helps as well as loving encouragement to those who are currently caring for special-needs children, the authors offer no pat answers, no tried-and-true formulas for success, no one-size-fits-all remedy for the pain and frustration that inevitably come with the job.

Why did God give me a handicapped child? Why did my baby die before I had a chance to hold him in my arms? Why doesn't God heal my child the way He has healed others? All of these are legitimate questions. But sometimes the only answer is that God knows why, and we don't ... and that's the way it is. Yet in the midst of the long and difficult struggle that comes with accepting that answer, there is great blessing.

These courageous caretakers and unconditional lovers of special children have chosen to come forward and bless others by sharing their own stories gained through trials and heartache, disappointments and loss. But they also share the blessings of triumphs and victory, achievements and success, as both they and their children learned, day by day, to live and rejoice in A Special Kind of Love.

A Book of Enablement
By Jeanne Zornes
If you have a special needs child, get this book. If you know of someone with a special needs child, get this book for them. They'll be encouraged by others who've worked through the special social and fatigue issues of their parenting. Besides sharing from their own experiences with mentally and physically handicapped or chronically ill children and grandchildren, the authors have invited other special-needs parents to get to the heart issues of their lives. The book is chock full of practical stories, like having a coming-home party when a sick child came home from the hospital. Or a "Blessings Jar" to help them focus on the positive. Having a trusted male relative take a wheel-chaired teen to the prom so she wouldn't be "dateless." Keeping thank-you cards in the car for when someone extends special grace. Printing up business cards to hand out when an autistic child has a public "inappropriate behavior" episode. Writing notes to curious neighbors about your special needs child, and inviting them to support the charity seeking a cure for the problem. There's so much more. You'll be glad you bought the book. I'm sharing mine with a friend with a special needs child to encourage her that she's not alone in her task.

A special book for special families
By Carmen Leal
When I first heard about this book, I figured it would be another compilation filled with a few great stories with the rest being just okay. As soon I read the first few pages I knew I was wrong.
If you have a special needs child, or you know someone who does, then this is a wonderful book to read. The format of the most incredible stories with the follow up comments by the authors makes this book both enjoyable and informative. The spiritual applications are strong without being puhy. The pictures of tthese special children added much to the book and made me want to read the stories again. There's something exhilarating about reading how every day families cope in extraordinary ways with the hands they have been dealt. This is the kind of resource that needs to be around for years to come.

Great commentary
By J. M. White
D.A. Carson recommends Garland's commentary on 2 Corinthians as second only to C.K. Barrett's work. Garland's work is comprehensive, readable, and conservative. He's not afraid to critique other scholars -- including Barrett -- and he is very persuasive. As with the rest of the NAC series, the Greek is mostly limited to footnotes, making this commentary a valuable resource for both pastors and lay teachers. Highly recommended.

A Great Series
By Roy J. Meek
This Series has been consistenly good. I usually do not recommend that a person buy a commentary set. Most sets have good volumes and not so good volumes. This series I would recommend. It is scholarly enoungh for a seminary student, yet readble enough for a layman or a pastor lacking a degree. This commentary offers a wealth of exegetical information. This is not a "preaching" and there fore offers no illustration or outlines. It just has good, sound and complete exposition.

Good all 'round with extra attention to theological concerns
By D Glover
Few commentaries successfully combine solid scholarship and depth of discussion with accessible and engaging writing but this volume on 2 Corinthians by David E. Garland takes a prominent place among them. While clearly on the technical side of the spectrum (537 pages of text), Garland's commentary may be read front to back.

The NAC series is based on the NIV translation, but Garland lets the reader know when and why he disagrees with the NIV's rendering of a particular passage. Interaction with the Greek text is split between the body of the commentary, where Greek words are always transliterated, and the footnotes, where they are not, making for a best-of-both-worlds approach and leaving the body of the text accessible to laymen. Though discussion of introductory matters such as historical-political context, Paul's mission, chronology of events, occasion, purpose, unity of the letter, etc., is brief (a mere twenty five pages), it is sufficient to give readers a solid orientation before beginning the commentary proper.

This volume is grounded in careful exegesis, frequently working through various interpretive options and consulting the broader Pauline corpus, before arguing for the author's understanding of the text. The author converses with ancient non-canonical texts, yet uses them without giving in to the temptation of many commentators to view Paul as beholden to the literary styles and rhetorical forms of his day. Never ignoring literary and rhetorical concerns, such as Paul's use of inclusio and chiasmus, Garland nevertheless focuses more on the theological or pastoral point Paul is making than how Paul makes it. Garland gleans from past and contemporary secondary literature in a way that adds value to the discussion of 2 Corinthians rather than distracting from it and at no point, even during excursus on famously thorny passages, does the reader lose their place in the flow of discussion of the letter itself.

In the introduction, Garland argues convincingly for the unity of 2 Corinthians rather than seeing it as a compendium of various writings, such as portions of the lost "sorrowful letter" (p. 38-44). These discussions are fleshed out in the body of the commentary as context warrants. Garland identifies 2 Corinthians 1:12-14 as the thematic statement of the letter (p. 42).

Garland's sensitivity to Paul's tact and his awareness of the pastoral implications of this most pastoral of Paul's letters shows in his frequent distillation of principles and crisp summary statements of the apostle's argument. Garland's applications never feel forced, preferring to keep them general, and thus they are seldom tied to current cultural phenomena in such a way as to render them unintelligible to readers in different historical or cultural settings. A good example of this pastoral awareness comes in the discussion of 2:4:

"Discipline is never painless - for the one who delivers it or the one who receives it. Calvin points out that godly pastors weep within themselves before making others weep. Paul is neither ironhearted nor ironhanded. His love for them motivated his actions entirely. If they were grieved, he leaves no doubt that he was grieved more" (p. 115).

There are some places where Garland's interpretation seems strained, most prominently his take on the nature of the challenge to Paul's apostleship. Garland doesn't think that Paul's apostolic authority was being questioned by the Corinthians, only his adequacy (p. 48-49); not his mandate, only his methods.

"The epistle is about Paul's ministry, which the Corinthians fail to understand (not about the legitimacy of his apostleship, which is not in question). They understand him only in part (1:14) because they still evaluate things from the perspective of the flesh" (p. 32).

`Amen' to everything here, except what is between the parentheses. This stance resurfaces throughout the commentary and, to this reader at least, becomes somewhat tedious. Garland recognizes that some of the Corinthians, under the influence of the "super apostles", have become "disgruntled with Paul" and have "belittled his apostolic gifts (10:10)...distrusted his motives (11:7-11)...accused him of unreliability, duplicity, and cowardice..." and "even began to call into question his gospel" (p. 55; see also p. 151, 312). In light of the varied and manifold ways Garland (rightly) sees the Corinthians' calling into question so much of the Apostle's person and ministry it seems like splitting hairs to repeatedly maintain that they weren't questioning the legitimacy of his apostleship, only the manner of his apostleship.

Related to this, Garland feels that little can be known about Paul's opponents. He does not see the "super-apostles" as related to the opponents Paul addressed in his Galatian or Philippian correspondence, a position which seems a bit too firm in light of the fact that they are clearly proud of their Jewish heritage (11:22). In Garland's view, many commentators too often read into Paul's arguments, assuming that he is either countering a charge against himself or some false teaching by an opponent (p. 213-4; p. 246, note 627; 272-3). Unless Paul clearly spells out the charge or opponent, Garland prefers to see Paul simply stating and clarifying the truth. Rather than building a case, however, Garland simply repeatedly reasserts this view, which leaves one with the impression that, where he accuses other commentators of assuming too much in one direction, he is guilty of assuming too much in the other. This assumption sometimes leads into false dichotomy, such as where Garland, commenting on 3:7-18, asserts that "Paul is not arguing against false apostles...He is defending his bold speech in correcting the Corinthians" (p. 167). One is left wondering why Paul couldn't be doing both.

Garland summarizes Paul's intentions in this letter as "defending his ministry", accomplishing this in the main by clarifying "the implications of the gospel that they have failed to grasp" (32). He hopes the letter will move the Corinthian church to "become proud of him again (5:12)", to give cheerfully and generously to the poor in Jerusalem, and to "understand the countercultural nature of the gospel" (32). Garland nails the concern of Paul's heart for the Corinthians:

"If they cannot understand and appreciate his cross-centered life and ministry as demonstrated by weakness and suffering, how can they understand the cross and the weakness and suffering of Christ and apply it to their own lives?"..."Those who cannot see the glory in the cross of Christ because they are captured by the wisdom of this world will hardly see it in his suffering apostle. If they do see it, however, they will see how exceedingly glorious Paul's ministry is. This letter is not just a personal defense; it is a restatement of the basic doctrine of the cross which Paul preached to them (1 Cor 2:2)" (32-3).

For Garland, this is at the center of the enduring relevance of 2 Corinthians.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Garland on a particular point of interpretation (and there is far more to agree with than not), one consistently comes away from this commentary edified and challenged. Any student or teacher of 2 Corinthians would benefit from having this worthy volume close at hand.

The conceptual physics standard
By J. Kremer
I am a physics teacher with a degree in physics and I think this is one of the best physics texts I have ever seen. I have used it for quite a few years now, with excellent results. Hewitt packs a lot of information into the book, but teachers and students are not expected to get through it all. The extra material gives the book great applications for a wide variety of audiences, but the responsibility is on the teacher to use it in a way that is not confusing to students. This is the case with any of the standard physics texts (Halliday Resnick, Giancoli).

Anyone who discounts this book because it has more words and cartoons than equations and math problems in it has no idea what understanding physics can be. Physics has too long been abused as an applied math course, and this book is a welcome remedy for this. For a general audience, this book provides an excellent overview of the fundamental concepts that make our world run. For science-bound students, it provides an excellent conceptual foundation for a more rigorous calculus-based course where deeper understanding of the connection between math and nature can be explored.

On major fault of the book, as one reviewer pointed out, is that Hewitt includes some problems that he does not give readers the math skills to solve. If a teacher assigns these problems, it is necessary that the students have access to the supplementary material written for the text that explains this math. But as a conceptual physics text for a conceptual physics course, Hewitt's book is unparalleled.

Reader-friendly book with online tutorials makes physics easy to digest
By lacorralez
This was my first quarter taking physics. In the beginning I was somewhat intimidated, since my only knowledge of physics were tidbits I had learned from watching the Science Channel and various Michio Kaku shows. However, upon reading the introduction section, I knew it would not be as bad as I had anticipated. The author states in the intro that he wrote the book using his own personal experiences and real-life situations in order to make the book feel personal, rather than like a bland textbook. And I am more than glad he did. His stories in each chapter make the reading easy to understand and remember. They also help the reader apply physics to everyday life.
In addition to the book, there are online tutorials and games for every chapter. The code in the book is the password to login. It helps tremendously. The site even has a digital copy of the book, which helps if lugging the book around is inconvenient. And if that weren't enough, the author even includes classroom videos of demonstrations as well as self quizzes for every chapter.

Wonderful primer or review...
By A Customer
This book manifests the proper perspective for both introducing students to physics and for refreshing those long out of college, or just anyone who wants to learn the essentials but does not have advanced math skills.
In this textbook for introductory physics, the author takes a wise approach by presenting the essential nuts-&-bolts of physics concepts. The concepts and principles should always come before the actual applications, i.e., involving the "math". Mathematics is certainly vital in physics, but any science book (or study course) needs to establish a foundation before proceeding with complex (and often confusing) calculations.
This publication has helped me immensely and I highly recommend it.
