It's the way to heal a broken heart....

I picked up the book because my husband's father was dying, and I didn't know how to comfort him or his family. Up till that point in my life, I hadn't lost anyone close to me. Mr. Ziglar was so open with his grief and I found myself weeping at nearly every chapter! But in the end, just like Mr. Ziglar, I felt like I was basking in the most unbelievable love and grace...and peace. I purchase this book for everyone I know who has lost someone close. On final note, his description of Psalm 23 has changed me.

BEST SPIRITUAL CONTExT FOR A GRIEVING MOM

The very "meat" of this book was spiritually enriching for me, as my 9 year daughter was killed in an auto accident one year ago. Although I am a Christian--I had many questions and thoughts that this book addressed to ease my pain. Although it doesn't provide answers, per se, it does provide assurance that in heaven--our questions won't seem so important after all. I know where my sweetheart is, and I know I'll meet her there again someday.

Reassuring walk for all people of faith

Just a week after returning to work after the sudden loss of my father found me face-to-face with this book. I have read and heard Mr. Zigler in the past and enjoyed his inclusion of faith in his work but was anxious to read how he and his family dealt with such a tragic loss. I read half of the book on an airplane later that day and was moved to tears several times. Mr. Zigler connected with those who have experienced a close loss as well as preparing those readers who have not yet experienced such a loss. That evening found me staying up much too late to finish the story. Mr. Zigler does a remarkable job comforting others through sharing his family's trials during the death of his daughter. A gripping highlight of the book was the journal kept by one of his son-in-laws at the hospital over the last week of his daughter's life. He is able to take you to the scene and reflect the many emotions a family experiences during such a time while giving access to what must be an extrordinary group of people.

The Books of Kings for Common Folk

Are you looking for a simple commentary on 1st and 2nd Kings that isn't too shallow and doesn't ignore problems? This is the commentary you have been looking for. Paul House provides lucid comments on the text of these two biblical books in their historical and cultural setting. He doesn't stop there, however. At the conclusion of major sections of the Books of Kings, House describes the significance of the passage to the biblical canon and to pertinent subjects in Old Testament theology. Once the full meaning of the text has been presented, the author proceeds to suggest how the teachings apply to the lives of today's Christians.
In comparison to John Gray's commentary on 1st and 2nd Kings in the Old Testament Library series (Westminster Press), House's volume is less academic but provides far more interaction with theological matters. Gray's work might be chosen by a seminary professor, but House's commentary would be far more practical for preachers and lay teachers in churches and Bible institutes.
A companion commentary that takes a similar stance on interpretive issues, is based upon the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible, and is referred to often by House, would be "1, 2 Kings" by Richard Patterson and Hermann Austel in volume 4 of The Expositor's Bible Commentary (Zondervan).
The New American Commentary series is the continuation of the tradition established by the older An American Commentary series under the editorship of Alvah Hovey at the end of the nineteenth century. The format makes the materials available to layman and scholar alike. The commentaries are based upon the NIV. Individual commentators, however, have the freedom to develop their own translations of the original text where they differ from the NIV. Technical points of grammar and syntax are placed in the footnotes rather than in the text. Footnotes also provide the reader with a wealth of significant bibliographic references to a wide range of resources. Students and professors alike will find these paths to further research extremely helpful and rewarding.

Excellent Commentary on Kings

I won't repeat the favorable comments made by others, but I will add this one point: one thing I love about this Commentary is House's extensive discussion of the historical, political, and military contexts of Kings, including citations to extra-Biblical sources. Having this outside context is invaluable for understanding the message of this important book.

Great sports story for kids

For those readers new to the Chip Hilton series, this is a good book in the series as it has basketball and a good off-the-court story. I feel the earlier books in the Hilton series are the best. I had many of original Hilton books as a kid and absolutely loved them. I re-read them through the years and am truly disappointed my son never got into them the way my brothers and I did. Of course, I was thrilled when the stories were re-released so I could read the volumes I never read. The stories are still great, but I am greatly annoyed by the small changes the authors chose to make, in attempt to modernize them, when they re-released the books. I have found these small changes often lead to confusion in the stories, particular in this book. For example, in "Touchdown Pass" Speed Morris is referred to as being black, which he was not in the original version. No big deal. That is, until this story which dealt with racism very well as the team took a young black player to a hostile town for the first time. The fact that Speed was now black changed the significance of the event, which the author apparently realized and scrambled to make sense out of it. Oh, well, my brother (another Hilton fanatic) told me to lighten up and just enjoy the books!

Good Stuff

Much like others much more famous than I, I also believe that the Chip Hilton series reminds us all of the basic values of life. I would certainly recommend the series to all young people, even at the risk of them being put off by Clair Bee's "hokeyness". There are great lessons contained wthin each story as Chip and his friends work very hard to navigate through their teen years.

For its time, a revolutionary kids basketball book

The original book was written by Clair Bee and published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1950. It was a series book for children, like Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew but with the focus on high school, and then college, sports and not kids solving mysteries. This was an amazing and revolutionary book for its time, without fanfare or hype. A subplot of the book deals with a new kid in town, Clem Barnes, a black high school student, who goes out for the junior varsity team. The team is comprised of 5 kids who have played together for a long time and have good chemistry. But Clem is clearly the best player on the team. What should the JV coach do? I am certain that Clair Bee's presentation and resolution of that dilemna and other related issues that Clem, and the black team trainer, faced, had a great influence on my young mind and my thoughts about the civil rights movement. And the book was written in 1950, before main events of the civil rights movement. Thus, I would go out of my way to find the original 1950 version of the book and not read the 1990s rewritten book.

About the Author

David W. Snoke (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1990) is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh in 1994 he was a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart with Manuel Cardona, and also worked in industry. In 2006 Professor Snoke was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, "for his pioneering work on the experimental and theoretical understanding of dynamical optical processes in semiconductor systems.'' His present research focuses on Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons and polaritons in two and three dimensions. Professor Snoke’s diverse experience has given him strong feelings about the present needs in solid state physics education. In particular, his experience in the fundamental semiconductor optics community as given him a deep appreciation for the unifying theoretical methods which run through solid state physics, while his interaction with the Bose-Einstein condensation community has given him an appreciation for the underlying unity of coherent phenomena as diverse as superconductors, superfluids, and lasers.

What's really going on in solids

This is definitely the best book I've read on solid-state physics. It presents clearly the beautiful underlying concepts, while relating them to other fields of physics and giving the necessary mathematical tools. This can be a great launching pad for a researcher and a useful resource for an educator.

When learning a new subject in physics or engineering, I often find myself thinking: "Sure, I see the equations. The math comes out neatly, and I can probably calculate everything I need using these .... But what is really going on here?" Snoke's book gives the understanding of what's "really going on" supported by a sound mathematical basis.

I believe that this is the right way to learn and teach physics, and as an educational tool, I never saw anything like this book since Feynman's lectures on physics. I teach an undergraduate course in solid-state physics, and I already started implementing some of the concepts presented here in class with great success.

The new holistic philosophy of the book allows dealing with very interesting new physics painlessly with an elegant mathematical description. I really like the demonstrations of deep fundamental concepts in "real-life" aspects of solid-state physics, such as explanations of why solids don't collapse or why spins align in a magnet based on fermionic behavior and quantum-field interactions. The author often puts the finger on what's the root cause of things. A good example is the sign in transition probability into a populated state which determines most of chemistry for fermions on the one hand, and all the stimulated processes for bosons including lasers and condensates on the other hand, and the reason for why only bosons can make up classical waves.

This book probably does not have the detail given in other basic solid-state books such as Ashcroft & Mermin, however I think the details should come only after the understanding of the principles. Furthermore, Snoke's book allows easy understanding of more advanced topics such as group theory that is usually difficult to grasp in more detailed books such as the one by Yu and Cardona. Another advanced topic clearly presented here is the quantum-field approach for many-body effects that can be found in more detail e.g. in Kittel's "Quantum theory of solids", however that book can be very difficult for a beginner in the field.

There are many useful connections to other subjects including quantum optics, nonlinear optics, chemistry, Bose-Einstein condensates etc. I really like this approach in contrast to the continuously growing over-specialization of science nowadays, leading to a sort of degeneracy in niche fields that could benefit from new ideas.

I strongly recommend this book to graduate students and to anyone interested in understanding solid-state physics, as well as to those teaching it.

one of the best solid state textbooks to date

This is one of the best solid state physics textbooks to date. We are all accustomed to learning the topic from Kittel or Ashcroft and Mermin. However, when the time comes to apply the knowledge to modern research, these books clearly belong to a different era and badly need to be updated. The book should be commended for its choice of topics (fairly modern), and its presentation style, which is highly pedagogical. The author writes in an extremely clear style, where each sentence is important. The book builds up the topics to cover modern, advanced materials, but assumes very few pre-requisites. Everything in the book is derived from first principles, using simple language and concepts. You will also be thankful for its use of group theory. Modern research requires it - but the existing texts are too advanced for the average reader. Snoke cover it at the right level for a physics student - without the proofs which tend to get in the way of learning this technical topic. In terms of content, the book covers topics that are relevant in modern research, such as excitons, spin-orbit coupling, quantum confinement, nano-junctions, quasi-particles, magneto-transport, fractional quantum Hall effect, anisotropic media, electro optics, second quantization, coherent states, photon interactions with matter, phonon interactions, electron-phonon interactions, Master equations, relaxation phenomena (T1, T2), defects, electron-electron interactions, phonon-phonon interactions, Boltzmann electron transport, nonlinear optics, photon-photon interactions, Raman scattering, polarons, many-body effects, Feynman diagrams & diagrammatic perturbation theory, Green's functions, correlation functions, noise, linear response theory & Kubo formula, correlated electron effects, spin and magnetism, superconductivity, etc. and the book uses both conventional notations and second quantized / Nambu notation. So you will be in good shape to read the current literature after going through this book. The problems / exercises are also pretty useful for self-teaching the topic to oneself.

The pedagogical value of Snoke’s book for undergraduate STEM students cannot be underestimated. The students in my Physical Chemistry and Modern Physics courses find the book very readable; this enables them to begin their “special topics” research at their own pace after a brief introduction. Many textbooks are lacking continuity in the development of topics; however, Snoke’s book is well written and logical. His book provides classical intuitive developments, followed by the essential quantum description. His field theory development builds from a consistent and readable description of the quantized harmonic oscillator and development of the polarizations and other needed attributes of full-blown field theory. His is one of the best introductions I have read and consequently, the STEM students understand it and feel encouraged. This understanding enables them to apply the theory, derive and understand a useful result and gain a sense of accomplishment. One student commented “that they felt as though they were walking in the footsteps of the giants.”
Most of the chemistry students are surprised by their “discovery of bosons.” They understand what a “real” coherent state is and can write its wave function. They further can follow the development of the statistical mechanical Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) theory. Their understanding continues to special properties of BEC: superconductivity, lasers, polaritons, etc. STEM students are elated with their elevation to a higher plateau of comprehension.

Astonishingly inspirational true story

Married for just a few short months, Kim and Krickitt Carpenter were involved in a devastating life-altering automobile accident. As the physical wounds healed, it became clear that Krickitt had lost 18 months of memory. She didn't remember meeting, dating or marrying her husband, Kim. This is their true story of how their love persevered.

Quote: "Krickitt, who's your husband?" Krickitt looked at me again and back at the therapist. I was sure everyone could hear my heart thudding as I waited for my wife's answer in silence and desperation. "I'm not married." (The Vow, Page 2 and 83)

Every once in a while you read a story that is so astonishing that it just doesn't seem real. The Vow: The Kim and Krickitt Carpenter Story is one of those stories with an amazing tale of a horrific accident, intense hospitalizations and medical bills and a wife with amnesia that leaves her with no recollection of ever even meeting her husband.

The book chronicles Kim and Krickitt's life together. Beginning with their first initial meeting and their first wedding, the vast majority of this book covers their struggles after the accident, which occurred when they had been married only two months. Once it is clear that Krickitt's memory is forever altered, the Carpenter's struggle to date again, love again and eventually marry again.

The Carpenters are devout Christians and believe that God uses them infinitely through their incredible story. Throughout the book, the entire Carpenter family leans on God through good times and bad, with heartbreaking honesty. Their story is one of doubting God's plan, but having faith that God does indeed have a plan.

I found that the unsaid question at the core of this book is "What would you do?". Would you have survived the accident? Would you trust God? Would you have stayed true to your vows? Would you fall in love with your spouse all over again? Read this book to see how Kim and Krickitt Carpenter responded with grace, dignity and perseverance.

Please note: I have not seen the movie yet so I can't make any comparisons. From a quick check on the internet I can see that names, locations and a few important facts have been changed from the book. According to the book (page 164-165), the Carpenters signed a movie deal in 1996 and learned fourteen years later than the movie would be produced. The Carpenters were able to visit the movie set during filming. True Commitment

This review is in reply to the review "Christianty shoved down our throats". I've seen previews for the movie and want to see it. I did not realize until reading these reviews that it was based on Kim and Cricket Carpenter. I read this book a couple of years ago. I enjoyed it and was challenged at their commitment to remain true to their vows. I will say the book did seem to drag on a little longer than needed. This is a true story. Christianity is a major part of who these people are. It was not shoved down your throat, just don't read it if you don't like it. I'm not sure if the person who wrote that review would like this couple to change the true story of their life so as not to offend her. Also it is worth noting this book was written long before the movie so I am pretty sure they were not trying to make money of the hype of the movie. And as far as how they met... again a true story, people meet online and no one thinks a thing of it. I think Elena missed the part of this being a true story. You may not like it,but that does not change the story.

The Vow, A True Inspirational Story But Much Different Than The Movie

After watching "The Vow" movie, I thought I would enjoy reading the book. While I found the book inspirational and uplifting, I found the details in the book were far different than the movie.I don't know why that surprised me but it did. I think that reason alone, makes this an interesting read.
I read this book in a day, simply because I wanted to know the "truth" of the story. If it had not been for their strong faith in God the Carpenters would never have survived as a couple.
I enjoyed the photos in the book but I thought they were ill placed. I would have preferred to see them after I read the book, instead of in the middle.

Best book in the series

I have read just about all of the 20+ volumes in the Hilton series and this has always been my favorite. In addition to being good sports stories, Chip always had to overcome some evil forces to triumph in the end. The evil is so strong in this story, that I want to punch the air in satisfaction when Chip wins out - no matter how many times I have read the book. If you are new to the series, however, I would suggest you start with the first story - "Touchdown Pass" - and go from there.

Good wholesome values. Excellent reading for young people

In his final year of high school Chip Hilton, All-State quarterback, is ready to lead his veteran Valley Falls High School team to a second straight championship. Tragedy strikes when coach Henry Rockwell is hospitalized and is fighting for his life. One of the towns leading citizens and the head of the school board conspire to oust the "Rock". They bring in an unscrupulous outsider and install him against Rockwell's recommendation. He quickly causes disharmony and chaos on the team. Hilton is suspended from the team several times. The way that Chip deals with adversity and fights back, makes great reading. It also teaches excellent values to young folks. A must read for Chip Hilton fans
