A Must Read for Church Planters

If I could give a church planter only one book to read it'd be this one. As a former church planter and now as a Church Planting Strategist, I resonate with what Ed shares in his book. At last, a book that wrestles with the modernistic formulas of church planting with the postmodern culture that we swim in. Ed's depth of knowledge is evident and he exposes the reader to a multitude of ways of planting churches. He's not hooked on one approach whether that be seeker driven, cell groups, house churches, or whatever. He lays everything out for the reader to process and in assessing their own culture to plant a relevant church (cell, house, etc).

The Real Thing

This book and this author are the real thing. I just completed the resident portion of a doctoral program for church leaders and preachers. Many of us were leaving to plant churches and we all agreed that this was far and away the most helpful of the 100+ books we read this year. More church planting books have been published over the last two years than at any other time in history. We read most of them. Some were heavy on theory. Some emphasized fads. Some seemed more intent on creating a new lexicon than offering practical help. This books stands above the rest in that Stetzer hit the sweet spot every preacher dreams about - it's the intersection of biblical truth with real life. For any church planter who is in the "real life" trenches of planting churches in a postmodern culture, that kind of practical help is a welcomed relief. As Ed paints a picture of our sending God and his heart for this emerging culture, he weaves in the most practical wisdom for those who would answer the high and holy call to be postmodern missionaries. As I've navigated the whitewaters of church planting in an urban context in Atlanta, GA, I've returned to this text so many times that it is dog-eared, underlined, highlighted, and tattered. I bought two more copies. A new one for me and one to give the next church planter I meet. This is great stuff.

Powers' text is the definitive classic in Christian Education Administration. It has been the standard for many years and many ministries for developing effective administrative policies and procedures related to local church ministry. Some of the material is dated, but an informed reader can adapt the material to modern use in any church setting. Robert Welch's Church Administration may, one-day, surpass Powers' text in usage in both the classroom and the local church, but that does not take away from the fact that Powers laid a terrific foundation for Christian Education Administration.

About the Author

Gerard J. Tortora is a professor of biology and teaches microbiology, human anatomy, and physiology at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. He received his M.A. in Biology from Montclair State College in 1965. He belongs to numerous biology/microbiology organizations, such as the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Education Association (NEA), New Jersey Educational Association (NJEA), and the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB). Jerry is the author of a number of biological science textbooks. In 1995, he was selected as one of the finest faculty scholars at Bergen Community College and was named Distinguished Faculty Scholar. In 1996, Jerry received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) excellence award from the University of Texas and was selected to represent Bergen Community College in a campaign to increase awareness of the contributions of community colleges to higher education.

Berdell R. Funke received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in microbiology from Kansas State University. He has spent his professional years as a professor of microbiology at North Dakota State University. He taught introductory microbiology, including laboratory sections, general microbiology, food microbiology, soil microbiology, clinical parasitology, and pathogenic microbiology. As a research scientist in the Experiment Station at North Dakota State, he has published numerous papers on soil microbiology and food microbiology.

Christine L. Case is a registered microbiologist and a professor of microbiology at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, where she has taught for the past 32 years. She received her Ed. D. in curriculum and instruction from Nova Southeastern University and her M.A. in microbiology from San Francisco State University. She was Director for the Society for Industrial Microbiology (SIM). She received the ASM and California Hayward outstanding educator awards. In addition to teaching, Chris contributes regularly to professional literature, develops innovative educational methodologies, and maintains a personal and professional commitment to conservation and the importance of science in society. Chris is also an avid photographer, and many of her photographs appear in this book.

Why waste money on hardcover ever again???

Ok, I have always bought hard cover texts, however needed to save money as I'm taking Micro for the summer (7 week course), so it just makes sense. The a la carte is in color and has the exact same pages as the hardback. I compared it to my classmates and they only wished they had saved as much money as I had! It's so convenient, I just take the chapter pages that we are reading in class, also...it came with Mastering, so I can download the e-text onto my iPad and bring it instead! I love it!

Good but needs supplemental material

Easy read and one of my favorite textbooks but I needed extra help for exams so I got the test bank for this textbook. Little did i know at the time that professors use the test banks for exam questions (my final came directly from it). If you need it to study, let me know and I'll send it to you =)

I hardly used it for class, but it was pretty convenient and I would just bring the chapters that we were studying to class in my binder. It definitely was better than having to carry the whole textbook.

Practical and Appealing

I bought this journal because it has eye appeal, and it's practical: It's great for jotting down things that the Holy Spirit impresses upon your heart as you spend time with the Lord. It would have earned a definite five-star rating from me if the pages did not have a slick finish. I like to write my journals using an ink pen, which will not work well on a slick finish. Obviously that's no catastrophe though. All things considered, it's a lovely journal and well worth the $11.99 plus shipping that I paid for it (the same price that's stamped on the back of the journal near the bar codes). Kudos to the author!

He is the co-author of six other undergraduate texts on anatomy or anatomy & physiology. He is currently on the faculty of the University of Hawaii and remains affiliated with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Martini is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the American Physiological Society, and the American Association of Anatomists. He is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Association of Biology Teachers, the Society for College Science Teachers, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the Western Society of Naturalists, and the International Society of Vertebrate Morphologists.

Good bargin Book on A & P

This is a great book for anyone that needs a small (less than 700 pages) book to look up basic concepts. I bought a used copy as a low cost way to start an A&P library. Medical students may not want to use this book unless they are in their very first year and know nothing about anatomy and physiology; but anyone in the allied health field will want to keep this one handy. Anyone who is willing to immerse himself in this book will definitely acquire a good working knowledge of A & P. I found numerous chapters that were great starting points to motivate deeper study. For instance, the Chapter on Muscles is very useful. It provide views of each major muscle, along with a diagram that lists what type of motion the muscle creates, and it's origin & insertion points. Many chapters have clinical examples as well as special sections that deal with aging and it's effects on the body's systems. If you are on a tight budget, get a used copy and you won't be disappointed.

Why I like this book.

My daughter who is taking a course in nursing likes this book.
I find this book neat and the illustrations done by Dr William
Ober clear and easy to the eyes. If you are not anybody who is
involved in the health or medical studies, and wish to know
more about the human body (anatomy and physiology), then I highly
recommend this concise "essentials" book. Take a look at page
132, Figure 6-6, you actually get to see the whole of human
skeletal system which appears as photograph, not a drawing. I
can use this page to show my children what the human skeleton
looks like and name the parts, which are clearly labelled. The
reason I have given 4 stars because I cannot say this book is
100% perfect. The authors will later improve it in their future
editions, still this is a good buy ...you won't regret.

A Woman's Garden of Prayer

I have had this little book for myself for 4 or 5 years, and I love it so much, I wanted to get another one to use for part of a wedding gift. This is a wonderful little book helping a person to plant seeds correctly to enhance their life and live the type of life God intended for us to live. Along the way in this little book are also some helpful hints for an outdoor garden. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to follow God in His steps.

Praying and learning trust His love

We bought several of these booklets after my wife read one as a gift from a friend. Sharing with others the love of God and learning to love our time alone with Him is important. And what better way to share than to give a good book that is informative, and enjoyable.

Sweet, precious book

So pretty of a book as well. I keep it on my desktop in my office. As I look out the window I can see the beginnings of my prayer garden and this book inspires me.
