BEST ORGANIC TEXT

I sold my textbooks that I had used for Organic I (Wade), and Organic II (Solomons) in the middle of the semester and bought this one instead (since our teacher doesn't use the book, only his notes). I found this book so much easier to learn from. Especially for someone who has had trouble learning the subject.

An excellent, clearly written book

I took organic chemistry last year, and I am so glad that this book was used as our textbook. Anyone who studies one of the sciences knows all too well that not many textbooks out there are at all easy to understand. Loudon's book is very clearly written, and he succeeds very well in putting information into words. At the same time, the book is not "dumbed down," which I appreciated.

About the Author
Gerard J. Tortora is a professor of biology and teaches microbiology, human anatomy, and physiology at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. He received his M.A. in Biology from Montclair State College in 1965. He belongs to numerous biology/microbiology organizations, such as the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Education Association (NEA), New Jersey Educational Association (NJEA), and the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB). Jerry is the author of a number of biological science textbooks. In 1995, he was selected as one of the finest faculty scholars at Bergen Community College and was named Distinguished Faculty Scholar. In 1996, Jerry received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) excellence award from the University of Texas and was selected to represent Bergen Community College in a campaign to increase awareness of the contributions of community colleges to higher education.Berdell R. Funke received his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in microbiology from Kansas State University. He has spent his professional years as a professor of microbiology at North Dakota State University. He taught introductory microbiology, including laboratory sections, general microbiology, food microbiology, soil microbiology, clinical parasitology, and pathogenic microbiology. As a research scientist in the Experiment Station at North Dakota State, he has published numerous papers on soil microbiology and food microbiology. Christine L. Case is a registered microbiologist and a professor of microbiology at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, where she has taught for the past 32 years. She received her Ed. D. in curriculum and instruction from Nova Southeastern University and her M.A. in microbiology from San Francisco State University. She was Director for the Society for Industrial Microbiology (SIM). She received the ASM and California Hayward outstanding educator awards. In addition to teaching, Chris contributes regularly to professional literature, develops innovative educational methodologies, and maintains a personal and professional commitment to conservation and the importance of science in society. Chris is also an avid photographer, and many of her photographs appear in this book.

Good but needs supplemental material

Easy read and one of my favorite textbooks but I needed extra help for exams so I got the test bank for this textbook. Little did i know at the time that professors use the test banks for exam questions (my final came directly from it). If you need it to study, let me know and I'll send it to you =)

I miss it

This was the required text for the microbiology class I took. I found this book to be very informative and helpful. The class was an introduction to microiology and this book was perfect for it! And I'm sure that, had this book been that bad, the instructor would never have selevte it for the course. My only regret is that I sold it back to the campus bookstore at the end of the semester; I wish I still had this to go back to and look up the information.

A lot of information....disorganized

I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

Too Short

I really wanted to like Miller's commentary, particularly because it was the only one recommended by Stuart and Fee in their book How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth: Fourth Edition or How to Read the Bible Book by Book: A Guided Tour.

CONS
Let me preface by saying that I have nothing against his Premillenial position per se. Everyone has to have a position. It is just the fact that I was not convinced by his evidence that his position was reasonable. What I found is that, while his book was well researched, the discussion needed to be meatier. The reason was two-fold. First, Miller seems to assume that the audience already has familiarity with eschatological positions, particularly the Premillenial position. For instance, after establishing why he has chosen to approach Daniel in this way, he often makes statements about the anti-Christ without explaining his reasoning. As a result, I had little evidence or argumentation to help me buy into his interpretation. Secondly, he regularly comes to conclusions without giving clear reasoning. This makes it hard to follow.

I would also have liked to have seen him exegete the text from the point of view of when it was written rather than from the point of view of fulfilled prophecy. What I mean is that he often suggests an interpretation of a passage based on how it was fulfilled rather than based on the Hebrew text. This seems like special pleading. It should be established first of all the various possible understandings of the Hebrew text and then one can suggest that a particular interpretation is to be favored based on its correspondence with fulfillment. He also uses the term anti-Christ and Christ in places where it would seem less anachronistic to refer to things from the perspective of Daniel's text (e.g. Messiah, abomination that causes desolation). This is not because I disagree with Miller's interpretation on these points, but because we are trying to listen to the text as written: "let the text speak for itself."

Perhaps it is because of his eschatological perspective, but I was disappointed that he characterized chapter 7 as the focal point of the book of Daniel. It seems to me that chapters 1-6 are not "preparatory" for the rest of the book, but central in their own way. The call to perseverance through tough times and to faithfulness in persecution as well as trust in God's plan is the thread that seems to tie the two halves of Daniel together and, in my opinion, this thesis should be seen as central - especially since there is so much disagreement over chapters 7-12. But for Miller it is the prophecy of the end times that is the most important aspect of the book - and particularly in a Premillenial way.

An example of assertion without evidence was his limiting the genre of Daniel to "Canonical Apocalyptic". He gave no good reasons or evidence why non-canonical apocalyptic had no bearing on the understanding of the genre. In my experience non-canonical literature is extremely helpful in interpreting canonical literature.

Finally, Miller seemed to confuse exegesis and interpretation. This may be to the prophetic nature of chapters 7-12. In 1-6 he does a good job because he uses historical evidence to help with exegesis. But in 7-12 he uses future history to do the exegesis. This is clearly interpretation (whether correct or not). The problem with claiming he is doing exegesis when he is doing interpretation is that one can establish exegetical options, but interpretation and application must be argued separately and afterwards. One sounds much more authoritative and objective using the word exegesis, when one is trying to bolster one's interpretation. This can be misleading.

On non-controversial parts, his commentary was good. When addressing controversial topics, his answers were occasionally clearly reasoned, but often just asserted.

Affirmed well the sovereignty of God without assuming that sovereignty and power forces a deterministic view of the world. Gave real room for human decision-making and freedom.

On many issues is not dogmatic as others are.

RECOMMENDATION
The background information was either hard to absorb or lacking. In contrast, John Lennox's book on Against the Flow: The Inspiration of Daniel in an Age of Relativism sets the stage vividly and with a lot more detail than Miller. More hermeneutical application would have been helpful, another thing which John Lennox does in his book.

Deserves to be read

In 1975 I read a commentary on Daniel. It was my first major reading of a commentary. I have been reading commentaries for fun (and work) ever since. My wife and I recently translated the Aramaic portions (six chapters) of Daniel. I found myself reading through the rest of Daniel written in Hebrew. This led to pulling off the shelf, John Goldingay's commentary and purchasing J.J.Collin's commentary, for further study. These two are the most raved about commentaries in the last 20 years. Goldingay is a master of the literary form and structure of each chapter/section of Daniel, and brings to the reader a vast array of other ancient sources. Surprisingly Goldingay, an evangelical, holds to a late date for the book. While his commentary has much to teach us, at times I found the exegetical comments on the verses a bit slim.

What Goldingay misses in the exegetical sections, Collins gives in abundance over any commentary of recent time. Montgomery's 1927 commentary on Daniel is the foundational work of the original languages and still worthy getting if you can find it. As for Collins he gives a detailed work on Hebrew and Aramaic words and for those interested both translation and commentary on sections of the Greek version of Daniel. He closes out the book with translation and commentary on the extra biblical Bel and the Dragon and Susanna stories. Adding to this a lengthy introduction including the history of the interpretation of Daniel makes Collins the premier work on Daniel.

The main thing I found missing in both of these exceptional commentaries is the lack of interaction with - a) scholars who still hold to an early date and - b) interpretations that have dominated the landscape for centuries. I wondered if there was any recent work that might give at least some balance to the discussion. From reading reviews I found a name unknown to me in Stephen Miller who I hoped might give some balance. His short introduction (only 30 some pages) grabbed me immediately. He continued through out the commentary to give the balance that was missing by interacting at every point with other scholars and interpretations. While Miller is not as thorough in exegetical comments as some, repeatedly he picks up on interpretive matters and insights that are lacking in those works. In Miller's work one will find a rich compendium of the best commentaries. This alone makes it a plus for a beginner. One may not agree with his all his conservative interpretations and will have to smile at his brief Sunday school kinds of sentences inserted for our personal application. Overlooking these it is well worth the buy and read. It has become one of my favorite commentaries. I rarely write reviews on books but this one deserves to be read.

Helpful introduction, in spite of editing flaws

With some judicious editing and better-quality printing of the photographs, this could easily become a five-star book. Before summarising some of the details that let it down, let us focus on the positive.

A key to understanding what this book offers is to read the subtitle: "An Introduction to New Testament Paleography & Textual Criticism". So it has two distinct focuses:
- introduction to paleography
- introduction to textual criticism.

In the opinion of the present reviewer, it is more successful in its second focus than in its first.

The first chapter (54 pages) gives a general description of the production of manuscripts in New Testament times.

The next two chapters (144 pages) give an overview of (apparently) all the New Testament manuscripts from approximately the first 300 years, also explaining dating decisions. Chapter two consists of a brief introduction to some of the principal manuscripts, followed by a summary of key information for each manuscript. I read this through in full, and would recommend that readers do the same. However, it will subsequently prove to be a very good quick reference for the purpose of finding the key facts about any manuscript.

It is only in chapter three that we actually see reproductions of single pages from some manuscripts, and the whole of some tiny fragments. This is a disappointment for several reasons:
- I would have expected to have seen more pages and manuscripts reproduced than are actually in the book.
- The quality of reproduction is generally not good. The chief cause of this is the paper that is used, which is fine for normal text but not up to the job of reproducing photographs with sufficient clarity.
- One MS (P Rylands 547 on page 185) consists of a blurred photograph in which the camera has clearly moved during the exposure: focus is correct, but there is a double image.
- References in the text to the reproductions often give no page number and occasionally give the wrong page number. (This is one of the places where the publisher should have done a better job of editing the text.)
- It would be better if the illustrations were on the page on which they are discussed, or on the facing page. As different paper is not used for them, there is no justification for grouping them together, far from the relevant descriptions.

Chapter four (a little over 54 pages) is a fascinating introduction to the use of "nomina sacra" in the manuscripts. This is a major plus point of the book, in the opinion of the present reviewer. Thoroughly recommended.

The last three chapters (one hundred pages) are an excellent introduction to textual criticism in relation to the New Testament.

The book has a glossary. However, some key terms are missing from it (e.g., stichoi).

There is an index of Scripture passages that are discussed. However, this is incomplete. Thus, there is a significant discussion of John 1:18 on page 328, but this is not listed in the Scripture references index. Likewise, John 8:58 is discussed on page 339, but this is not listed in the index.

The book is lacking a general subject index, which I view as a serious flaw. Thus there are, for example, scattered throughout the book comments on the work of Westcott & Hort. But there is no way to track these down, nor indeed the comments on other major topics and writers referred to (Metzger, the Alands, etc.).

The book has one extremely odd characteristic. Whole paragraphs, sometimes whole pages of text, are repeated verbatim in different parts of the book. One must assume that the author pasted in text from another document that he had written, and then forgot that he had already done this - on numerous occasions. Thus, for example, many paragraphs on pp. 47-48 are identical with those on pp 276-7. Likewise, part of page 49 is identical to page 278. The last paragraph of p. 97 and the first paragraph of p. 98 are identical with sections of two paragraphs on p. 278. Many paragraphs of pp 281-2 = pp. 296-7.

Taking the book through a proper editing process should also result in the correction of the relatively small number of spelling errors (including in German and French), and the correction of non-standard punctuation in places (as, for instance, when a full stop is followed by the first letter of the next sentence, without a space). I also note that an unusual Greek font is used in which the final "s" of words has the form of a Latin script "s" (or perhaps they accidentally selected the wrong font for that letter?).

So, the book is definitely worth reading, but I hope that a second edition will be produced in which the errors will be eliminated and a subject index added. It taught me less about actually reading Greek manuscripts than I expected. For that, it would have been necessary to present more manuscripts, and some of them would have needed to be worked through with the reader.

Perhaps what I was expecting to find is in another book by the same author, which he repeatedly refers to, "The Text of the Earliest New Testament Greek Manuscripts" (co-authored with David Barrett). In yet another typo, this is referred to on the back cover of this book as "The TEST of the Earliest New Testament Manuscripts"(!) - capitals mine, perhaps typical of the lack of care by the publishers (note also that the word "Greek" is missing). Perhaps this is not what I was expecting. I would advise reading the reviews on Amazon.com before purchasing.

In spite of the limitations referred to above, "Encountering the Manuscripts" is a good starting-point as an introduction to New Testament Greek manuscripts.

I wish some of the greek terms in this book were in greek. Other than that, the content of the book accomplishes its stated goal. I wish some of the lists of manuscripts were put in the back as an appendix.
