Faithful to the End: An Introduction to Hebrews Through Revelation, by Terry L. Wilder, J. Daryl Charles, Kendell H. Easley

In classroom and scholarly study, the Gospels, Acts, and the Pauline letters
receive far more attention than does the so-called “end” of the New Testament:
Hebrews; James; 1 and 2 Peter; 1, 2, and 3 John; Jude; and Revelation.

Faithful to the End: An Introduction to Hebrews Through Revelation offers
a careful study of these latter biblical letters, closely examining each one’s
authorship and origin, destination and audience, purpose, and major themes.
Appropriate as a reference work or textbook in college and seminary classrooms,
this volume uniquely combines head knowledge with a challenge to the heart,
for it is purposefully titled after each book’s recurring theme of persevering in
the faith.

Coauthor Terry L. Wilder writes, “Our hope is that God might use this text
to help readers not only learn about these New Testament books, but also to
appropriate the message contained in each. May we be faithful to the end!”

Excellent Overview of Hebrews Through Revelation
By Michael C. Boling
The last nine books of the New Testament are often overlooked, with perhaps the exception of Revelation, with the remainder of the New Testament corpus receiving the greater focus. Most are familiar with the Gospels, Acts, and the Pauline Epistles, but when it comes to books such as Hebrews or Jude for example, other than recognizing the great faith chapter of Hebrews 11 most believers rarely make it that far into the end of the Bible which is very unfortunate. Seeking to rectify that situation, Drs. Terry Wilder, J. Daryl Charles, and Kendell Easley have written a helpful commentary on the books from Hebrews to Revelation appropriately called Faithful to the End: An Introduction to Hebrews Through Revelation, providing the reader with valuable insight into these oft neglected letters.

Each chapter of this survey style book addresses individually Hebrews, James, I Peter, 2 Peter, the Letters of John, Jude, and Revelation. Following a thorough introduction to each book, the authors systematically unpack each of these books of the New Testament. Issues under consideration include elements such as the setting of the book, important themes and underlying subthemes that should be paid attention to by the reader, literary features such as the genre of the book, rhetorical devices used by the author, references to the Old Testament. The authors also address things such as who wrote the book noting in the case of Hebrews the debate that has waged over the years as to that book’s author. The purpose of why the author wrote the book is also addressed along with a discussion of the outline, structure of the book, and a helpful bibliography that provides the reader with additional books for future reference and study.

One may rightly wonder why the need for yet another New Testament commentary or survey as there seems to be a plethora of such works available on the market today. While there certainly is a large variety of New Testament commentaries and survey works to choose from, much of what is available is not geared towards the use of the average layman which is unfortunate. Faithful to the End conversely is written so that layman and those who have a more experienced background in theological matters will find this book to be a very valuable study guide.

There is much to enjoy about Faithful to the End, but I will relay a few elements of this book that I found quite useful. First, the authors as noted earlier write in a manner that is scholarly yet very accessible meaning the information provided is well researched (as evidenced by the numerous footnotes and the extensive bibliographies), the important issues of each book are addressed in sufficient detail so to relay the overarching information necessary for engaging these books without getting bogged down into too much scholarly minutia, and finally, the book is very well laid out and consistent in its approach to each book.

When engaging the book of Jude, the authors rightly note that Jude has often been described as “the most neglected book in the New Testament.” Despite being only one chapter, there is much to learn from this short letter and the authors of Faithful to the End examine in great detail the lessons to be gleaned from this short but important book of the New Testament. For example, they aptly comment “The Epistle of Jude is an impassioned exhortation to a church that finds itself living in the midst of ethical lapse and doctrinal compromise.” Such a message bears repeating in our day and age where the same issues faced by those Jude wrote are being faced by the Church today. Thus understanding the issues Jude addresses such as apostasy and judgment are treated by the authors of Faithful to the End with sound exegetical precision, providing the reader with invaluable insight into the message of Jude and why it continues to be important today.

I highly recommend Faithful to the End by Drs. Terry Wilder, J. Daryl Charles, and Kendell Easley. It is a book that should find its way most certainly into the hands of Bible College and Seminary students as a textbook or additional study resource. Additionally, I would recommend this book for pastors and laymen again as a valuable method by which to further study the books of Hebrews through Revelation.

I received this book for free from B&H Publishing Group for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Surprisingly persuasive
By Peter Llewellyn
Over the last few years I have reworked an old theological subject for advanced-level undergraduates, examining the New Testament epistles Hebrews, James, 1-2 Peter and Jude. While there's a vast literature on the "back end of the New Testament", there are not many books suitable for use as a textbook for this sort of course. This book came into the library for review, and a cursory look had me thinking, here's yet another too-conservative defence of the apostolic authorship of James and the Petrines. For decades I had been persuaded that the strong scholarly consensus was correct: the Petrine letters were not written by their stated authors.

However, as I read the book for review I found myself - despite myself! - increasingly convinced that the claim of pseudonymity just doesn't stand up. I am compelled to accept that the early church (I mean in the second and third centuries) believed they were authentically by Peter and Jude respectively, for very good and powerful reasons. Thus, if these epistles are pseudonymous, a large bulk of the early church were very badly mistaken. I won't rehearse here the reasons given by the contributors to the essays in the book. Those essays are of uneven quality as well as disproportionate length, but I do recommend that jaded NT scholars who still unthinkingly follow the Tübingen School's "early catholicism" rubric, read this book and think again. It won't take long.
