About the Author

Craig L. Blomberg is Professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary. In addition to his numerous articles in a variety of journals and symposiums, he is the author of The Historical Reliability of the Gospels, Interpreting the Parables, Neither Poverty nor Riches, and a commentary on 1 Corinthians. He is a graduate of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.A.) and the University of Aberdeen (Ph.D).

Everything you ever wanted to know about Jesus & the gospels

Blomberg's work is an absolute delight. After years of teaching courses on Jesus and the Gospels, he committed himself to write out word for word everything he wanted his students to know. The result of working through this book (complete with review questions at the end of every chapter) is that you can essentially have Blomberg as your teacher for $22 (minus the tuition, parking, and grade!).
The work is divided up in 5 sections: Historical Background for Studying the Gospels; Critical Methods for Studying the Gospels; Introduction to the Four Gospels; A Survey of the Life of Christ; and Historical and Theological Syntheses.
Blomberg works through the critical issues methodically. The eye for detail, the insightful exegesis, and the delightful prose all make this work hard to surpass as an introduction and survey. It truly is a "one-stop" shopping textbook. I expect to turn to it repeatedly throughout the years for the incredible amount of information packed into its 400 pp. In many senses it serves to function as an ultra-condensed commentary in certain parts.
Blomberg seems to be rare in the scholary field as his work has not alone a commitment to excellence in scholarship, but also a passion to communicate the gospel today. He often points out reasonable application that the text might offer us. He seems as if he is able to worship as he writes and teaches. May his tribe increase!
One improvement could have been further discussion and explanation of geographical pointers and significance. Blomberg treats the topic in just a couple of pages and then continues on.
All in all, this is an excellent volume, and deserves a wide readership.

The Best Book on Jesus & the Gospels

Over a year ago, I noted that Craig Blomberg's Jesus and the Gospels is the single best book on... well... Jesus and the Gospels. I also noted that a new edition would be coming out later that year, which I'm now happy to review. My feelings regarding the book haven't changed at all over time. I'm just as excited about it now as I was when I first read it 10 years ago.

The book is divided into 5 main sections: Historical Background for Studying the Gospels, Critical Methods for Studying the Gospels, Introduction to the Four Gospels, A Survery of the Life of Christ and Historical and Theological Synthesis. Each section can be read on their own and out of order, though of course it is helpful to take the material in the order given. The book is "textbookish," which shouldn't be surprising since it was written as a textbook. Blomberg does a phenomenal job of weaving through debates in a concise but informative manner, along with giving suggestions for further reading. He offers his opinions when there are differing options, but he represents other viewpoints well and doesn't force his reading on the text.

I'll select two sections to highlight. First, his opening section on the historical background is extremely helpful, especially for those who have little knowledge of the culture and historical circumstances in which Jesus was born, lived and died. Whether Blomberg's discussing the Maccabean Revolt or the religious groups in 1st century Israel (Pharisees, Sadducees, etc), the reader walks away with a clear understanding of the major players and events that form the backdrop of the Gospels. And- this is very important- you won't find yourself nodding off like you did in ancient history class (or was that just me?).

Second, Blomberg's Survey of the Life of Christ functions as a wonderful mini-commentary on the Gospels. Blomberg deals with issues of historicity and harmonization (perhaps a bit more than I would), as well as offering thoughts on each episode in the life of Christ as seen in the Gospels. I'm consistently impressed with just how much information is fit into a relatively short space, with attention given to distinctives in each Gospel, interpretive options and short, but crucial, exegetical notes. You won't have all your questions answered in this section, but you'd be surprised just how many are.

There are probably a few places where I disagree with Blomberg on matters of interpretation, but honestly I can only think of 2 off the top of my head. 1) Blomberg sees Jesus' death as happening in 33AD, whereas I lean (ever so slightly) to a 30AD date. 2) I don't think the Temple "clearing" (Blomberg's preferred term) found in John 2 is a separate event from the one seen toward the end of the Synoptic Gospels. That's it. These aren't exactly the issues denominations divide over. Like I said, I'm sure there's probably more, but that's all I can came up with at the moment.

There will be some who own the 1st edition and will be wondering if they need to get the 2nd edition. I'm not sure you need to run out and buy it right away if you own the 1st, but I'd make room in my budget to update it at some point. And if you don't own this book in any editon, you should. It would be helpful if this book existed in paperback in order to drop the price a bit. If it were a tad cheaper, I could see this book used in a church class (as it is, it certainly could be, I just know people in my church will struggle with the thought of dropping $30 on a book).

So who would benefit most from this book? Honestly, pretty much anyone can. Laypeople will find this book an accessible guide to Jesus and the Gospels. The only section that may not interest most laypeople would be the Critical Methods chapter, but it wouldn't be because it's over their head. Pastors and teachers couldn't ask for a better book to help them in their personal study and preparations to teach the material. As I've said in the past, I've been using this book for years and see absolutely no reason to stop now. Simply put, I've yet to find a guide as reliable as Blomberg or a book as well-written.

About the Author

Ted R. Johnson is a biology professor at St. Olaf College, where he has been teaching for 20 years. Excellent book on all aspects of Freshman Physics

This series of textbooks on college freshman physics is simply the best I have found in print, even if it is not the most widely used. It has clear explanations of all concepts, plenty of instructive diagrams, and most of all many interesting solved problems and examples. I am by no means saying that this is an easy book, you will need to read it carefully and work through the examples. However, unlike with other physics textbooks, all of the information is there if you are willing to put forth the required time and effort. Make sure you've had the first two semesters of calculus first though, or there are parts of this book that will not make sense to you. If you are interested in having a good textbook and reference for both college physics and modern physics, it is the best choice you could make. If you are only interested in the classical physics part, I suggest you buy the 10th edition and save yourself a lot of money. The 10th edition has just a very abbreviated section on modern physics. This book is of great use for engineers, because not only will it get you through your freshman physics sequence smoothly, it is a great reference with lots of examples that you will need when you take statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and your sophomore level courses on electric circuits and EM. I notice that Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:

Quality textbook

When I first saw this book I freaked out. Mostly due to its size. It is HUMONGOUS and weighs at least 10 lbs. I don't know yet if we are supposed to bring it to class every time. I hope not. But as to content it looks pretty good. I had physics classes before and I can tell if the authors really care about their subject and provide useful info vs. just making an 800-pages monster just to make more dough. The book is good and I intend to keep it (will not sell as a used book). It is a good reference for the future and - let's face it - very good reading :)

Great book for learning physics while abstracting from math

I liked this book a lot. It has a lot of information, presented very clearly, about topics in physics that are often not studied in undergrad programs like fluid dynamics, physics of sound waves and musical instruments and thermodynamics. The illustrations are stunning!! One can really understand a lot of physics by reading this book - from mechanics to electromagentism, waves and modern physics.
I do think that the book is somewhat superficial in all the above topics. It uses only modest math, and so does not reach the complexity level of the Berkely physics course series (which I am familar with). As I said, the strengths of the book are its breadth and simple explanations of the less complicated topics.
If one wishes a more in depth understanding of physics, it is easy to move from this text to more advanced texts on mechanics, magnetism or quantum mechanics (assuming appropriate knowledge of math). I would still recommend starting with this book in order to get a clear and broad view of physics while enjoying the process.
It is annoying that this book has an outrageous price. It is not so different from the 10th edition, and so you can get a new or used 10th edition copy for a fraction of the price $150 (I got a new 10th edition hardcover (with modern physics) under $40).

About the Author
Jay Withgott is a science and environmental writer, and has written for a variety of journals and magazines including Science, New Scientist,Current Biology, Conservation in Practice, and Natural History. Holding an undergraduate degree in History and Studies in the Environment at Yale University, Withgott has authored nearly 20 scientific research papers and has taught labs in Ecology and other subjects while gaining masters degrees in Biological Sciences (University of Arkansas) and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (University of Arizona). Scott Brennan teaches environmental science, policy, and journalism at Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment. He has also worked as a journalist, policy analyst, and environmental consultant. The recipient of a Duke University research fellowship in marine science, Brennan's accomplishments have been recognized by Washington State University, Western Washington University, and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Overall Solid AP Text With a Few Issues

This is a good choice for an AP level environmental science course. The material is laid out in a logical way, beginning with the necessary background on biology and ecology, then using chapters on environmental ethics and policy as a segue into some of the more human-centered topics such as energy and pollution. A good review section is at the end of each chapter with comprehension and analytical level questions for students to answer. Some chapters also have opportunities for finding relationships within presented data.

There were a few moments in this textbook that gave me pause. In the chapter on ecosystems, I was puzzled by the use of climatographs with two line graphs instead of the more typical line graph for temperature and bar graph for precipitation. The graphs were much more difficult to quickly analyze in this format.

I also caught a whiff of author bias. In the nuclear energy section, the author seems to have a clearly positive view of the use and growth of nuclear energy as a alternative fuel. I suspect this reflects a greater concern for the chronic issue of carbon dioxide pollution as opposed to the more acute risk of a nuclear accident. One can easily argue for this position. However, this comes off as more than a little tone-deaf, given the Fukushima accident in Japan.

There were also a few topics missing that I look for, such as the growing field of hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas. However, all things considered, this is a comprehensive book that covers a wide range of topics with an appropriate amount of detail.
