Useful tool for Bible study classes

I was looking for an aid to create quizzes for the youth Bible study class I teach. This book includes some very basic questions from familiar characters and stories, to be sure, but there are also plenty of more obscure questions. The book is arranged in chronological order from Genesis to Revelation, and has subjects within Bible books broken down into sections. For example, the first section is “The Beginning” and has 7 questions in that section. The next section is “The Fall,” then “Cain and Abel,” etc. You get the picture. This format works nicely for setting up curriculum that covers the highlights of the entire Bible. It’s not the only reference I use, but I’ve found it to be perfect for outlining, and then I can choose to delve deeper into an area if needed. The back of the book includes some Bible study aids, and a brief summary of all the Old Testament Books. There’s also an outline of what is contained in the New Testament, with a summary of Jesus’ life. The author did a good job of covering the highlights, and I would recommend this book as a classroom tool.

The ultimate introduction and guide to prison ministry

I bought three books on prison ministry, have experience with one on one prison ministry and mentoring, and have attended the Prison Fellowship VIP (Volunteer In Prison) Training.

Lennie Spitale's book is the best I've read yet. It gives virtually all you will need to know if you are considering prison ministry, already involved in and form of prison ministry, or just curious about what life behind bars is like. Spitale is probably one of the most authoritative writers on the topic, having plenty of experience of life from both sides of the fence.

He was a rebellious child, joined the military and was jailed a number of times before discharge. After discharge from the military, he served many years in prison on multiple incarcerations before turning his life around and going straight. Since his release, he has spent at least 25 years in prison ministry, and founded an organization dedicated to preparing others for prison ministry and chaplaincy.

This book has all the information and warnings any prospective prison ministry volunteer could need, as well as all the heart breaking and compelling motivations to become involved. It is easily readable, neither deep mind bending theory nor shallow boring fluff. Of all the books on the topic I have read this one is the most value for money.

If you only buy one book on the subject, this is the one that will give most value.

Excellent book, but not written to be thorough

Robert Alden is eloquent and concise - he puts a lot of useful information in very few paragraphs. However, due to the limited length of this commentary, it simply doesn't have room to deal with all textual issues (as he also says in his introduction) - for notes on textual issues I recommend the online NET study Bible, which comments on most of them. Though I do not agree with Alden on everything, he seldom says anything without giving his reasons, and thus he makes it easy to make up one's mind as to whether one agrees. I would recommend this book to anyone studying Job. I'm also using the Tyndale commentary on Job which is good, but not as good.

Suitable for seminarians and laypersons

I've used this as a reference in seminary studies and in personal Bible study. Alden writes at a level suitable for both the academician and the layperson and I recommend this book for those who lack the ability to do their own exegesis from the original Hebrew.
