A Helpful Place to Begin Exploring Polity

Church polity is a fascinating topic and it is no light study to try to understand the differences in ecclesiastic praxis that we encounter even in our own broad theological traditions. This counterpoint introduction to Church polity includes five authors which represent three specific polities: Congregationalism, Presbyterianism, and Episcopalianism. The Congregational authors (Daniel Akin, James Leo Garrett, Jr., and James R. White) each represent subtle differences in Congregationalism (single elder, plurality of elders, and one representative of general Congregationalism who argues mostly for a plurality of elders). Why the editors chose three representatives of Congregationalism is not clear - they could have equally chosen three representatives of either of the other two ecclesiastic traditions. To add to the confusion, Daniel Akin was tasked with making a case for the Single-Elder-Led-Church but concedes that he personally prefers a plurality of elders. Huh?

I suspect most non-Congregationalist readers will find Akin's and White's arguments for Congregationalism tenuous at best; however, many will likely find James Leo Garrett's contribution to this work fairly helpful and perhaps some may even find it convincing.

For those interested in looking for a strong presentation of Episcopalian polity, they will need to look elsewhere. One wonders if the Editors were even familiar with their author's views on the subject prior to soliciting their participation. Case in point: Paul Zahl, the chosen representative of Episcopalianism. Zahl doesn't seem much interested in actually making a case for Episcopal polity, so no argument is presented, no exegesis is offered. What we get instead is his history of the Anglican Church. An interesting read nonetheless, but hardly appropriate for this venue.

That leaves Robert Reymond and his defense of Presbyterianism. Reymond is a gifted author and his confidence and handling of the subject at hand is attractive. Reymond will certainly be appreciated by Presbyterians and, like Garrett, will likely given opponents of Presbyterianism a better understanding of Reymond's tradition and the reasoning purported to support it.

The disadvantage to a format such as this book adopts is that it is not sufficiently interactive. Each author is given the opportunity to comment on each other author's presentation, but that's where it ends. This leads you to want to know how each author would respond to his peer's reviews, which would probably generate a lot more clarification of each author's intention and position.

When I am seeking to purchase books on Amazon, I read the reviews ultimately to determine if I should make the purchase or not. Is this one worth your money? I suppose that depends on how familiar you are with the topic. If you feel you have a good grasp of the traditions represented in this book, you should probably save your money as you are unlikely to gain much from this book. However, if you are not so familiar, then it is certainly is worth the money and in that case it has my recommendation.

Good Resource

I appreciate the breadth of coverage that the authors (and editors) gave to each of the government styles included in the book. These five views do indeed compass the prevailing styles currently used in church polity. The reader is given adequate description as well as references for each style. By having different authors represent each style, the reader gets to see each style presented in a complete, authoritative manner. This legitimizes the material presented. In the end, the reader has a valid and valuable resource for their library.

About the Author

Frederic H. Martini received his Ph.D. in comparative and functional anatomy from Cornell University. Dr. Martini's publications include numerous journal articles, technical reports, and magazine articles. He is the author of Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, First Edition, and the Human Body in Health and Disease, First Edition with Edwin Bartholomew, and Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology, First Edition with George Karleskint. Dr. Martini is a member of the American Association of Anatomists, the American Physiological Society, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the National Association of Biology Teachers, the Society for College Science Teachers, the Western Society of Naturalists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Association of Underwater Instructors.

Dr. Martini has been involved in teaching undergraduate courses in anatomy and physiology (comparative and/or human) since 1970. During the 1980s he spent his winters teaching courses, including human anatomy and physiology, at Maui Community College and his summers teaching an upper-level field course in vertebrate biology and evolution at the Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) for Cornell University. Dr. Martini now retains affiliations with the University of Hawaii and SML.

Robert B. Tallitsch received his Ph.D. in physiology with an anatomy minor from the University of Wisconsin–Madison at the ripe old age of 24. Since then Bob has been on the biology faculty at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. His teaching responsibilities include Human Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, Kinesiology and Cadaver Dissection. Bob is also a member of the Asian Studies faculty at Augustana, and teaches a course in Traditional Chinese Medicine in this program. Bob’s previous research grants, journal articles and abstracts center around the effect of hypoxia on contractile mechanics, sodium and calcium transport in papillary muscles isolated from genetically hypertensive rats. His publications for Prentice Hall include Histology: A Diagnostic Atlas with Ron Guastaferri (Art Coordinator and Illustrator, First Edition, 2004). Bob is a member of the American Physiological Society, AsiaNetwork and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Augustana Bob has served as a visiting faculty member in the Department of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins College of Medicine, the Foreign Languages Faculty at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology, the Foreign Languages Faculty at Central China Normal University (Wuhan, PRC), and a visiting scientist in the National Institutes of Health Gerontology Research Center at the National Institutes of Aging.

Michael J. Timmons received his degrees from Loyola University, Chicago. For more than three decades he has had a strong commitment to teaching human anatomy and physiology to nursing and preprofessional students at Moraine Valley Community College. Early in his teaching career, Professor Timmons became very interested in publishing in those fields. He is a coauthor of Human Anatomy Laboratory Guide and Dissection Manual, the lab manual that accompanies this text, and of three anatomy and physiology laboratory manuals. He is also the editor of the Prentice Hall Laser Disk with Bar Code Manual; author of Atlas, the laboratory learning system; and content editor for the Instructor’s Presentation Manager 4.0 CD-ROM, which are supplements to this text. His special areas of interest are biomedical photography, crafting illustration programs, and developing instructional technology learning systems. He has authored a series of titles on the dissection of the cat, including A Photographic Atlas of Cat Anatomy, Cat Anatomy Slides: A Visual Guide to Dissection, and numerous study guides.

Professor Timmons is an active member of scientific and professional associations. He is also a national and regional presenter at the League for Innovation Conferences on Information Technology for Colleges and Universities and at Human Anatomy and Physiology Society meetings.

Excellent, Worth the Weight

I am an EMT working on nursing pre-requisites, and I read this book, as well as Anatomy and Physiology for Emergency Care, and Marieb's book on anatomy. This is the best if you take the subject seriously. The large size allows for better graphics, which is important in this field. The text is uniformly excellent. I also like the fact that developmental anatomy (fetal development) is separate, so you can only go to that if you're interested. Lot's of cadaver pics, which are very important in showing that real bodes are not coveniently neon and coordinated colors.

BTW, the other two books mentioned are also good. Marieb offers less material, and the A&P for Emergency Care is for paramedicine. If this area is new to you and you need excellent grades, find a local paramedic A&P class (40 hours), which is the best way to get a head start.

Excellent Purchase

Thank you so much to so many people for making the possibility of purchasing a text book online. It all starts with the professor and whether they choose a new edition or previous editions. As a single mom, I'm trying to get my daughter through college. This book was $150 at her college bookstore, and I asked her to contact the teacher to see if a different version would work. He guided her to which versions would be acceptable and we received this book in excellent condition for a total of around $10, including shipping and handling. This helps tremendously...thanks to all involved.

This book was required reading for an Old Testament course I took at Liberty University. My professor (Ronald Giese) happens to be one of the authors. I appreciated reading the book, and it gave me some good insight into bible interpretation. The main premise of the book is that it is important for readers of the Bible to make 'genre distinction,' also called literary interpretation. In the first chapter Giese writes, "Ignorance of (literary) context leads to some of the worst mistakes of interpretation. On the other hand, familiarity with this context provides a window through which we can greatly increase our understanding of what the biblical authors were trying to say." I believe that this correctly shows the importance the Bible reader puts into udnerstanding the different genres of the Bible.

Chapters one through three introduce the topic and show its importance. The following ten chapters each define and describe ten different types of genres. The last chapter is a practical guide for Bible teachers. In particular, I appreciated the insights the book gave on Job. Interpreting and understanding Job is much easier if study is given literary importance- Job is not really of the narrative genre but more of the wisdom genre. Overall, I found the first three chapters the most helpful. Some of the different genres are very, very similar, thus difficult to distinguish and apply. That is my main complaint about the book. There probably only needed to be between 4 and 6 different types of genres, maybe with the others coming as sub-genres. I also don't like the title of this book, in trying to make a catchy title, I believe they created a title that scares people and misrepresents the book. There are no codes to crack- just use your brain in distinguishing the different kinds of literature that the Bible employs.

Teaches us what we should know

Cracking Old Testament Codes is a very helpful book to understand the different genres of writing that are used in the Old Testament. The premise of the book is that we, as modern English readers fail to understand the use of literary devices and categories in the text of the Old Testament.

The book on the whole does a good job of pointing out general principles about each genre, such as the nature of a proverb as compared to narrative. There are boatloads of false teachings that would be eradicated if their proponents would simply understand what is in this book.

I wouldn't say the book is a must-read, but it's pretty close, not because of its quality (although it is indeed good), but because of the nature of the book. It teaches us what we should already know.

Excellent Tool for Biblical Interpretation

This is one of the best written guides for understanding the different literary genres of the Bible. The language used is simple to follow and the explanations and examples presented in the book are clear. Sandy and Giese have managed to take a somewhat complex task and guide the reader into a better understanding of the process of biblical interpretation from a form critical perspective. They compare the process of finding "genres" in a biblical text with making distinctions between "news reports, editorial commentary, or comic strips in a newspaper." Sandy and Giese' book addresses information which is essential for serious readers who want a better understanding of the Bible. The authors discuss the importance of identifying the literary genre to help gain a better understanding of the function and meaning of the biblical text under study. A total of ten different genres are presented with brief summary descriptions and a dedicated chapter for each type. Also, a description of the content and structure of the genre is provided along with step by step instructions on how to interpret the genre within a sample text. A recommended list of readings for further study of genre interpretation is included in the back of each chapter. Other features include a glossary of form critical terms and a scripture index. Although this book addresses the genres found in the Old Testament I have also found it useful in New Testament studies as well. I would strongly recommend this book to any pastor, seminarian, or serious bible student as an exegetical tool for biblical interpretation.

Frank Page, coauthor of The Incredible Shrinking Church, is a former president of the sixteen-million-strong Southern Baptist Convention and pastor of First Baptist Church in Taylors, South Carolina. Very good resource gave me insight into some of the passages in Jonah that were a little unclear to me. I have several of the other New American Commentaries they are just as helpful. They are verse by verse and this I like most. This is a book I would recommend for any Bible study student/leader.

There were the creeping locusts whispering, "This isn't really happening;" the gnawing locusts whittling away her confidence; the stripping locusts exposing her deep anger. She found a promise of hope tucked in an obscure book in the Old Testament, a promise that shaped her life, the promise that God will "restore the years the locusts have eaten."

Chapter one is titled, "The Big Bug Blitz" and foreshadows the tone of the book which reads like a novel. "The locusts were at it again. I knew it the moment I saw the clouded look in her eye, by the trance-like way she kept pouring cream in her cofffee. 'I can't believe this is happening,' the stranger murmured to our prayer breakfast group. 'I don't think I can go on. I feel so alone.'"

Readers are drawn into Ginger's heart and the pain of a ruined dream. As Jan offers to mentor Ginger through her healing process, we are eyewitnesses to her struggles to trust God again. With biting honesty and wit, Jan reveals her own story of the loss of her marriage, her foolish choices and the ache of prodigal daughters. Ginger moves toward hope as Jan shares stories of other women who reveal their heartbreaks--Phyllis who lost her only child to a tragic car accident, Eileen who was nine months pregnant when her husband drown while diving, Susan whose secret affair with a pastor almost destroyed her, Lisa whose past of abuse brought a distrust for men and God, and author Liz Curtis Higgs whose "bad girl" days, her "locust years" are the heartbreak of her ministry today.

The stories in the book are different, but the feelings of damage and waste, emptiness, fear and regret are common to all. The consistent thread of hope lies in how these women partnered with God to redeem their losses in surprising and wonderful ways. Each of them found a deeper relationship with God and new purpose.

I never set out to get cozy with Joel, a rather dim figure among the minor prophets of the Bible. But knowing this guy changed my life. His name, a common one in Israel means, "the Lord is God." You've got to love a guy with a name like that.

Joel's book, wedged between Hosea and Amos, deals with a locust plague, not such a big deal considering bug blitzes were quite common in those days. But this one was unique. A complete disaster, it wiped out everything. The locusts cane in successive swarms, each destroying what the others had left behind.

But God had a purpose, to use the plague to stir people to a new sense of Himself.

Along comes Joel. With vivid word pictures and powerful emotions, he pleads to the people to get the message: there are dark days ahead, yes, but God desires to bless His people who live honorably in the face of struggle and loss.

It took me some time to piece this truth together, and I took some foolish turns on my way to healing. In my painful yesterdays, I clung to the promise of Joel 2:25. I watched God not only repay me for the years but remold my life into something richer and better than before. I wouldn't have believed it years ago when the locusts of despair swooped into my life, but now, after the locusts, there is a deep valley in my soul, not a dark valley but a crevice where joy has settled in, a joy I would never have known without the storm.

About the Author
Jan Coleman has a favorite motto: If you can laugh at it you can live with it. Though she writes on serious issues of the heart, she adds a touch of humor. A good chuckle at ourselves and the situation is good therapy, she says. It's sunshine for the mind, the pole that adds balance as we walk the tightrope of life. A veteran of loss and locust survivor, Jan lives her life on the light side, trying to view it in hopeful confidence from the eternal perspective.

A former journalist, humor columnist and legislative aide, Jan has been published in numerous magazines, is a contributing author to the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series and God Allows U-turns as well as dozens of other story collections. As a speaker, she merges her own life's lessons with Biblical insights that upift and inspire. She's known for her hunmor which tugs at the heartstrings of her audience.

For five years she served as co-leader of a large singles ministry and shared the message of the locusts with many hurting women.

Though God restored her in many other ways, he brought her a new mate who is committed wholly to her and his faith. She and Carl live in the foothills of the Sierra mountains in California. Her favorite getaway is to the high country to fish for trout.

Beyond Inspiration to Practical, Loving Help

Jan Coleman has cut to the core of our wounds with "After the Locusts:Restoring Ruined Dreams, Reclaiming Wasted Years". I anticipated using this book as a companion piece to daily Bible study over several weeks. Instead, I read it in 4 days, absorbing, underlining and taking notes before deciding to share it with a friend. Now, I need to buy several more copies for friends who are hurting in ways that "After the Locusts" helps.

Jan reels us in with real life stories of women experiencing the kinds of hurts and tragedies that are familiar to us all. She reminds us that, with a focus on God's truth and love, we can discover wisdom in our ruined dreams for healthier, more joyful lives. To help us move through our pain and regrets, Jan provides story after story to prove that truly trusting God means believing that His purpose is greater than our loss.

In spite of loss, trust God anyway. In spite of loss, love the Lord anyway. In spite of loss, praise His Majesty anyway. These are pieces of beauty that underscore the message of "After the Locusts". Jan reminds each of us that we are not alone in our sadness, our worry, or our grief. All of us have our sufferings. But God created each one of us lovingly and uniquely and desires that we come to him faithfully. And Jan Coleman gives us practical strategies for achieving just that. However, her strategies are grounded in the truths of Scripture.

It is a joy to have the wisdom of "After the Locusts" on my
heart. Between times of loaning it to friends, the book will be a valuable resource in my library.

This Book Ministered to Me Like No Other!

Jan Coleman's book speaks to your heart, mind and soul! This is the first book in years that I've read A.L. (After Locusts) from cover to cover. Jan speaks to you as if you were a long-time friend sitting at her kitchen table, bringing tears to your eyes as well as a knowing smile to your lips. Sharing her own experiences as well as those of other women, she candidly recognizes that you are not alone in your struggles, and assures you that there IS light at the end of the tunnel as well as a rainbow after the storm. Reminding us of God's promise, "For I will restore to you the years the locust has eaten." Joel 2:25, she comforts you like the arms of a dear friend. This book ministered to me like no other!

This book was too good to keep to myself!

Ever read a book that you couldn't stop talking about? After the Locusts is one of those books. Jan Coleman writes as if she's talking directly to you. She shares many stories from friends she's personally encouraged through ruined dreams, and gives you hope that you or someone you know will overcome those wasted years.
This book would be great for a women's Bible study. Highlighting the Book of Joel, Jan Coleman relives her own failed marriage; comparing that loss to the desolation left by a swarm of locusts. After the Locusts touches on coping with the loss of a loved oned, bankruptcy, dealing with troubled teens, divorce, and much more.
You will want to share this book with a friend. I did!

Lucid, clear, concise

I am currently in the final 6 months of a doctoral program in Astrophysics. My own research has little to do with cosmology and I've recently decided to firm up my understanding of it. So far I have read through Andrew Liddle's book and this one with Doddelson's and Weinberg's books on the 'read next' list. This book is a very easy and informative read.

I suppose it might be more difficult at the undergraduate level but if you understand integral calculus, basic ODEs, and a smattering of QM, EM, differential geometry (very little needed), and a bit of thermal physics then this book is for you. At the graduate level it reads almost like a popular science book on cosmology with the perk that the included equations and the author's very readable and clear explanations illuminate the subject in a way that a math free book never could.

I give this book an easy 5 stars as an introduction for cosmology. I consider it to be 'A Brief History of Time' for graduate students with an interest in the field. It is somewhat skimpy on presenting dark energy and inflationary theory but the first lacks the evidence that dark matter does and the second is beyond the mathematical scope of a book at this level.

Over all I'd suggest this book to anyone with a basic background in the pre-requisites. Andrew Liddle's book is more readable (freshman calculus only) but is much skimpier on coverage, is much less thorough and clear, and is somewhat dated in the treatment of hot dark matter Cosmology. Doddelson's book is good as well but requires a much stronger basis in mathematics. If you are looking for the 'meat' of cosmology (general relativity, perturbation equations, etc.) look elsewhere. If you want a broad and easily digestible analytic presentation then look no further.

Two thumbs up for the author, the exposition and organization are about as flawless as I've seen in any textbook.

Ease your way into cosmology

As an undergraduate studying particle physics, I have found Ryden to be an excellent first-book in cosmology for self-study. The text requires no previous knowledge of general relativity (though this certainly helps, perhaps at the level of Carroll's text) or astrophysics, which is refreshing for those who would rather not wade through the astrophysics part of an astrophysics-cosmology course.

Ryden's explanations are clear and carefully thought out, and she really makes an effort to hold one's hand through many topics. The book is straightforward and well-organized enough for more advanced students to skim quickly through chapters they are familiar with while also being able to slow down at certain points for a careful derivation here and there.

Overall, the topics are somewhat rudimentary (this text is definitely geared towards undergraduates)--i.e. don't expect to be calculating dark matter relic densities or studying cosmic strings--but combined with her suggested references for further reading and the text's ground-up style, this is a fantastic book at this level that provides a solid foundation for students who wish to move on to more advanced texts such as Kolb and Turner or Dodelson.

Addison Wesley should also be commended for their excellent typesetting (continuing a string of very well typeset books including Carroll's Spacetime Geometry and Goldstein's Classical Mechanics, 3rd. ed). Formulae are clear and easy to read, sections are well divided, and there is a wonderfully large margin for readers to write notes in.

The only lament I can agree with on this book is that it does not contain WMAP data, which would be a delight for a modern cosmology book.
