Great guide

The Minirth Guide for Christian Counselors is a rare book which combines, with a perfect balance, Bible and counseling. The book is full of biblical references and passages that the author uses to provide biblical support and to make this guide a very interesting and helpful book for Christian counselors and pastors in general.

The author’s main point in this book is that spiritual growth is a basic element in the process of recovery, and that Christians who are dealing with emotional or mental disorders would benefit from spiritual encouragement and development. Many Christian and non-Christian counselors would dispute that point while others would appeal to the many scientific researches and empirical evidences that support the benefits that holding the Christian faith has on individuals who are suffering emotional distress or any type of mental disorder.

The author begins by providing an overview about Christian counseling. He includes basic principles of Christian counseling, the parts of man and how they relate to Christian counseling, and some others introductory concept that help the reader to gain basic knowledge about Christian counseling. He continues by providing basic steps that may help the counselor in the process of reaffirming the Christian client on his or her faith. The author also presents seven pragmatic and biblical steps that he considers basic elements in Christian counseling.

The book is basically divided into two sections. The first one (pages 1-70) is devoted to practical counseling issues, while the second section (71-181) provides the counselor with tips, forms, and documents necessary for an organized counseling office. I found the second section to be very helpful since most of the resources included on that section are sometimes ignored by Master Degree programs and counseling schools.

The main weakness of this book is that it is not updated with the DSM-5. It is understandable if we consider that this book was published in 2003 and the DSM-5 was released in 2013, and many mental agencies are still in the process of integrating it into their systems. I hope this book will be revised, updated, and published again.

Increasing Retention by Raising the Bar

Rainer here addresses the problem all too often found in American churches: losses through the "back door." Many books can be found on how to attract newcomers to a congregation, but what is the key to keeping them? The author answers this question with solid research and Biblical values. In a nutshell, Rainer's research reveals that the secret to keeping members is expecting more of them. Other insights from his research are presented here as well, but the focus of the book is powerful effect of "raising the bar." This title is a keeper for my pastoral library.

A good survey of a survey of Southern Baptist churches

This book is basically an explanation of a survey done on 287 southern Baptist churches. The main secret to keeping people in your church is to assimilate them into the Sunday School program. The author spares no words to describe the importance of having an evangelistic Sunday School program. He points out that churches have often seen Sunday school as a discipleship or educational program, but that we need to learn from these SBC churches that long term health and growth are best secured by giving the Sunday school department a revamped, evangelistic thrust. The survey results also suggest that if you communicate that Sunday school attendance is expected of all new members, then you will have a greater chance of keeping them active once they are assimilated into a class.
But it should be kept in mind that every church culture is different. Pastoring a church where Sunday school is an available option is nice. But to make it an expectation of all members can risk the ire of some of the long standing members of the congregation. In short, some of the suggestions the author makes will be easier to assimilate into your church than others. You have to know your people and have a sense of what the Holy Spirit is saying, and a sense of what will and will not fly in your parish.

Effective churches reach and keep new members.

High Expectations is a great resource for those seeking to understand the dynamics of evangelistic growth and effective discipleship. The many graphs and charts provide a visual checklist of the characteristics of high assimilation congregations. The book is more of a companion to "Effective Evangelistic Churches" rather than a stand-alone resource. At times Rainer jumps to conclusions that are out of character, such as "Mission Statements are more important than vision statements"... which is based upon research showing high assimilation churches tend to have mission statements (64.3%) rather than vision statements (42.9%).

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field - including those of former students, now in health careers - that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings InterActive Physiology¨ CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

Jon Mallatt earned his Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Chicago. Dr. Mallatt is currently an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Washington State University, where he has been teaching human anatomy to undergraduates of all backgrounds for 24 years. He is also a member of the department of Basic Medical Sciences, where he teaches courses in Histology and Anatomy of the Trunk in the WWAMI Medical Program. WWAMI honored him with their "Excellence in Teaching Award" in 1992, 1993, 1995, and 2000. Additionally Dr. Mallatt holds a position as adjunct Associate Professor in the department of Biological Structure at the University of Washington. His particular areas of expertise in the study of anatomy are histology, comparative anatomy, and anatomical drawing, although his research now focuses on the origin of vertebrate animals and molecular phylogeny. Dr. Mallatt is an accomplished researcher with 39 publications in the fields of anatomy and molecular phylogeny to his credit.

Patricia Brady Wilhelm received her Ph.D. in Biological and Medical Sciences from Brown University and is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at the Community College of Rhode Island. She has been teaching anatomy to undergraduates for over 10 years at Brown University, Rhode Island College, and the community College of Rhode Island. In 1991 she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching from Brown University.

Continuing to strive for excellence in teaching and learning, Dr. Wilhelm has been a leader at the Community College of Rhode Island in the uses of technology for teaching through the development of web-based course tools, on-line dissection videos, on-line student assessment tools, and cooperative learning strategies for the classroom. The driving factor behind these innovations is the desire to aid student learning by making course materials accessible and to make the study of anatomy an active and interactive process. She has also served as a consultant in training faculty from all three public institutions in Rhode Island (University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island) in the uses of technology in teaching.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Wilhelm has contributed to numerous anatomy and physiology publications. Dr. Wilhelm's research interests are the skeletal/muscular morphology of mammals, vertebrate anatomy and evolution, and biomehanics. She continues to pursue these interests by working on applied human biomechanics with colleagues in the Physical Therapy program at the University of Rhode Island.

A traditional approach to the study of human anatomy

The authors of this book have chosen to present human anatomy in the traditional "systems" manner (nervous system, respiratory system, etc) instead of interacting sections (upper thoracic, lower limbs, etc). Complicated systems (such as the nervous system) are broken up into different chapters, and certain organs (heart, blood vessels) also receive their own chapters. All in all, the book was well organized and made studying easy.

The book opens with an introduction to body orientation, those terms doctors and nurses use to describe locations of disease and pain relative to certain parts of the body. The second chapter is a brisk jaunt through the structure of cells. The third chapter is a fascinating introduction to embryology, and the fourth chapter focuses on tissues. Chapters 5-25 are the actual anatomy systems chapters.

The text simplifies many concepts and biological pathways with color-coded charts, tables, and figures. Interesting diseases and conditions are scattered throughout each chapter, which makes some of the dry text more interesting, because they tend to bring together different chunks of knowledge from a particular chapter.

I found the chapter on the lymphatic and immune systems to be somewhat thin, but since much of the anatomy of those systems is covered in other chapters, it's perhaps understandable. Also, I'm not sure why there wouldn't be a chapter on the exocrine system(s).

The book is bundled with A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, which gives a nice summary of tissues and provides cadaver examples of all bones, muscles, and organs.

Didn't like the layout of this book

Just my learning style, I guess, but it seemed this book studied anatomy systems in a vacuum without relating them to surrounding structures. Furthermore, I think the approach of teaching anatomy without much reference to physiology and vice versa is ridiculous.

I much preferred another Marieb text (had a photo of Michael Phelps on the cover) that addressed Anatomy & Physiology together. It made FAR more sense and my educational experience was exponentially more cohesive!

If this book is required for your class, guess you'll have to get it to keep up in class. But, if your learning style is like mine, I'd suggest getting an inclusive A&P book for further reference so that the concepts come together better.

a useful and needed tool

We all need a good story. We need to people our exposition with the concrete. The listeners hope to hear the words "there was this man that... or I am told that ...", knowing that the preacher is using a storehouse of wisdom. Preaching is not about one's own special story, but about clearly and in an entertaining manner telling our shared experience and needs. This type of book is a must for all who preach or speak.

Good, informative commentary

I found this commentary to be helpful in two areas: For preparing sermons and for helping with teaching sunday school. Some of the stories told by the authors are good for either illustrating an expository style introduction for a sermon or for helping you think of a similar story in your own life.
If you want a line-for-line study this is not it. But the authors do have good insight into the scriptures

This commentary is a very basic and perfunctory treatment of the scriptures; it simply tells you what you already know if you have an eighth grade education and you read the Bible with both your eyes. My suggestion is buy an NIV Study Bible or Faithlife Study Bible; both bring more to the reader than this commentary. Or just read Galatians, Ephesians and Philippians.

Makes the text disposable, depending on your goals.

First, let me say that, early on in the semester, I became disenchanted with the class I was using Campbell's book for (general biology). It was pretty evident that one of the main intentions of the class was to weed out students, and so I didn't find it very appealing; however, if you are unsure about which facet of biology you're interested in (or if you're interested at all), then the class might hold some value for you.

Taking that into consideration, I wanted to get what I need to know for the tests, and not waste anymore time. Taylor's study guide was perfect for this; it gives only what you need to know, and presents in a fashion such that the reader cannot be passive; i.e. its perfect for test preparation. I went from spending upwards of 10 hours a week reading and outlining Campbell's book to maybe 10-15 preparing the weekend before the test (about two days in the library), with equal results.

I must admit that I actually learned the material better when I was reading and outlining, but after asking myself to what end, I decided it wasn't worth it. This certainly isn't the only use of the study guide, but it worked for me, and I think it illustrates the power of this guide.

Very good study guide for college biology

This is a good study guide for reviewing the essential topics in college bio. It is a good resource that helped me to learn bio. this study guide helped me

This study guide helped to clarify information in my text that was unclear. By using this study guide it helped me to raise my grades in both of my college biology classes. Subjects liked ecology, the five kingdoms and energy pathways were explained with the reader in mind. I also found the following awesome for test preparation:

The first study guide is great for getting a clearer explanation for harder subjects like the Krebs cycle and genetics. However, the the last three study guide helped me to figure out what kind of questions would appear on my college exams. I was recommended these books from my cousin who took bio at another college. I'm glad I took his advice, they helped me a lot.
