So Help Me God: The Ten Commandments, Judicial Tyranny, and the Battle for Religious Freedom, by Roy Moore, John Perry

Chief Justice Roy Moore believes the state must acknowledge the moral principles on which America was founded and that it is not illegal to do so. While the separation of church and state may be a credible and legitimate tenet, it has been largely misconstrued and abused during the last forty years.

Moore was sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. His critics, both within conservative circles and without, have maintained that he violated the law by disobeying the order of a federal judge to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments. But Moore brilliantly argues that those who have ordered him to violate his oath have, in fact, broken the law.

So Help Me God will articulate why he believes elected and appointed government officials have the right and the obligation to acknowledge God as the foundation of American government and jurisprudence.

From Booklist
Moore's refusal to follow a court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the state court building cost him his position as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. In this fascinating memoir, he reflects on his struggle to comply with the law and be true to his faith. His essential premise is that our Founding Fathers, via the Declaration of Independence, acknowledged the sovereignty of God in the life of our nation, notwithstanding the clause forbidding the establishment of a national religion. He notes the prominence of God in the swearing of oaths and other aspects of court procedures, as well as our nation's continuing Judeo-Christian traditions. Moore sees the efforts by the ACLU and other groups to remove all references to religion as a reflection of the nation's downward moral drift. His passion in asserting his own religious commitment reflects his personal courage in standing up for his beliefs, but for those who do not share them, he also makes a clear case for justifying the sanctions against him. From AudioFile
This otherwise intriguing insight into both Judge Moore's life and the history surrounding the United States Constitution is flawed by its seeming lack of production. The narration is adequate, though Moore is not a professional reader, but many false starts and dead air between some words are not edited from the recording, and the volume is inconsistent at times. Staunchly Christian, but also unrepentantly American, Moore makes a strong case for a biblical basis in the American legal system, but the amateur production quality almost undermines his attempt. His spirited and unapologetic reading endears himself to the listener, however, and his passion for truth, justice, and the American way is clearly evident. A National Hero in the Spirit of Our Forefathers
By John W. Heckel
Roy Moore hits the nail on the head in exposing the judicial tyranny to which America has succumbed. Many view him as a political maverick but there will come a time for all of us when we have two options: civil disobedience or submission to the judicial tyranny of our time. The judiciary has become the "despotic branch" which Thomas Jefferson feared after Marbury v. Madison (1803). Unfortunately, Roy Moore is one of the few remaining who has the spine to stand against federal judges run amuck.

You aren't buying this for the writing quality
By Graham K. Racker
There are two, maybe three, reasons one would purchase this book.

First, you already know and agree with what Judge Moore stands for, and feel the need to read something entirely self-affirming. Please don't do this. Explore and digest the views opposed to yours.

Second, you are a card carrying atheist and you love to lambaste the religious right because it makes you feel intellectually superior. Please don't do this. Explore and digest the views opposed to yours.

(Maybe) Third, you know of Judge Moore and have a historical interest in the role his judgeship played in a particular phase of American government's struggle with religious self-identification. That's very good of you! However, this book provides very little to that topic.

Should you not find yourself in these categories, then you should still not read this because it plainly reads as, "I did (blank) because I felt (blank) and people did not like this because (blank)" over and over again. Your time would be better spent considering a parable from the Quran or the Bible, or watching a Christopher Hitchens debate on the value of religion. Any of these would benefit your more in the exploration of American religiosity.

Lastly, if you want to read this and are hoping for some interesting jurisprudence(like I did), DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. My law professor has a world class sense of humor and if some brown-noser (me) asks for more reading, he supplies stuff like this.
Cheers
