About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, forging a relationship between her students and the anatomy and physiology concepts that will form the basis of their careers has always been a priority. Having gone back to school to get her R.N. degree and an M.S. in gerontological nursing when she was already a college teacher, she is uniquely able to understand the needs of both instructors and students. Elaine is Professor Emeritus of biology at Holyoke Community College, Holyoke, Massachusetts, where she taught anatomy and physiology for 25 years. She has also relocated to Naples, Florida, where she is now Visiting Professor at Edison Community College in nearby Fort Myers, Florida. She keeps in touch with many of her former students, whose experiences in allied health careers provide insights into the changing needs of A&P students.

Book Package came with everything that was needed

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.

If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.

When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.

I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. I hope you find what you need.

Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

Not much difference between editions

I used the previous (7th) edition and got an "A" in my online Anatomy and Physiology class. From what I could tell, there was no difference between the cheaper 7th edition and the ridiculously priced 8th edition except for the picture on the cover!

I gave the book three stars because it was unclear and lacked details in so many areas that it left me confused. I had to clarify a lot of issues by looking them up online.

I resold my book after I was finished with it for the same amount of money I paid for it so all it cost me was the initial shipping fee.

FYI - I quit buying books at my campus bookstore after the first semester and have saved over $1000.00 so far, just by buying used, previous editions.

The latest ploy these unscrupulous bookstores use is to package up a bunch of useless items with the necessary textbook and sell the "bundle" at an outrageous price. It is criminal.

I always ask the instructors before hand what other materials are required and if I can use the previous edition. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. Occasionally a professor will insist on the current edition and I still save a ton of money buying it used on Amazon.com. When I am finished, I re-sell them and usually get all my money back!

We need to get the word out about the college bookstore textbook scams! It is an OUTRAGE!

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.

An expanded and much improved revision of the book

I think this book is most notable for its emphasis on the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms for homology theory and for the verification of those axioms for the invariant singular homology theory. Using those results, the author shows how to calculate the homology groups of finite cell complexes (and more generally of a space obtained by adjunction from a known space). This provides all the classical results for spheres, compact surfaces, real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces, lens spaces etc. without going through the more tedious method of simplicial complexes. He was able similarly to prove the well-known duality theorems for manifolds and the Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem, following ideas of Dold. Anyway, this book begins with the basic theory of the fundamental group and covering spaces; then defines the higher homotopy groups and proves they are abelian, but doesn't go further into that theory.

The original book by Greenberg heavily emphasized the algebraic aspect of algebraic topology. Harper's additions in this revision contribute a more geometric flavor to the development, adding many examples, figures and exercises to balance the algebra nicely. Harper also provided slicker proofs of a few of the theorems in the original, and added lots of new material not previously discussed (such as about knots). The result is a nicely balanced presentation of a branch of mathematics that began toward the end of the 19th century and has had pretty spectacular development ever since!

Part 2, Singular Homology Theory is recommended.

This text is suitable for students of mathematics without prior knowledge of algebraic topology. The best thing with this is Part 2 which treats singular homology theory. However, you may want to resort to Maunder for an effeective introductin to elelmentary homotopy theory, and to Dold for and intruduction to orientation and duality.

About the Author
Thomas M. Smith, Associate Professor in Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, received his Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Tennessee in 1982. The main focus of his research over the past two decades has been to develop an individual based theory of community and ecosystems dynamics. As part of this work he has served on numerous national and international panels that have addressed the potential influence of human activities on the global environment. He has authored over 70 publications based on his research, and he has been recognized as one of the most cited scientists in the field of global change research. Thomas's work has taken him to over 70 countries and 6 continents. He has served on the faculty of the University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa), Australian National University (Canberra, Australia), as well as the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA, USA). In addition, he has held research scientist positions at both Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, TN, USA) and the Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Laxenburg, Austria). He has over 20 years of experience teaching the science of ecology to both science and non-science majors. Robert L. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology from Cornell University. He is Professor Emeritus of Ecology at West Virginia University. He has spent over 30 years teaching Ecology and conducting field research throughout the world. His teaching responsibilities have involved mostly undergraduate courses in general ecology and graduate courses in population ecology and wildlife management. About the Author
John R. Bisagno is pastor emeritus of the 22,000-member Houston's First Baptist Church where he preached for thirty years. He has also authored twenty-five books and now serves on the adjunct faculty of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Bisagno and his wife, Uldine, have three children and eight grandchildren. They live in Houston, Texas.

Rick Warren founded Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA, in 1980 with one family. Today it is an evangelical congregation averaging 25,000 weekly attendees. He also leads the Purpose Driven Network of churches, a global coalition of congregations in 162 countries. Tapping into his vast pastoral experience, John Bisagno provides insight on over 100 aspects of local church ministry. In a short and succinct manner, Bisagno shares very specific, practical instructions for local church ministry that are often overlooked by seminaries.

Approach
John Bisagno defines the roles of pastor, staff, committees, and all church positions. He offers step-by-step suggestions, providing structure and needed resources. Scripture references, although not always provided, are always in context.

Brief Summary
Part 1: Bisagno opens the book by describing the nature of the church and listing five ingredients of growing churches. The gifts, offices, and committees of the local church are also explored by looking at their purposes as well as how they can be most effective.
Part 2: This section examines a pastor as an individual, dealing specifically with call to ministry, the importance of seminary education, character, skills, and personal and family life. Bisagno offers helpful hints on time management, realistic expectations for pastoral ministry, and endurance in the service of the Lord.
Part 3: The spiritual leadership of the pastor is covered. Specific guidelines are offered regarding visitation and counseling, as well as conducting marriages, funerals, etc.
Part 4: The organizational side of pastoral leadership is covered, including dealing with tough decisions and opposition. Bisagno stresses the importance of unity among church leadership while warning that opposition is not uncommon and that some issues are not worth fighting over.

Part 6: Bisagno examines the worship service from a number of angles, including the following: type of music, the use of drama, the atmosphere, guest preachers, public testimonies, ushering, evening worship, and pulpit supply.
Part 7: Bisagno explores ministries to students, adults (single, married, divorced, or widowed), children of all ages, those brought to the church by bus, and those attracted by church activities. He suggests resources and training methods for dealing with these groups.
Part 8: Bisagno reviews the process of calling a pastor, along with handling the resignation or dismissal of staff members. Delegation of responsibility to staff members is address biblically and practically.
Part 9: Bisagno stresses the importance of a Finance Committee and spending plans to encourage financial responsibility. He includes suggestions for borrowing money, ministering to the poor, holding successful capital campaigns, encouraging congregational giving, and other financial matters.
Part 10: Proper upkeep and operations of church facilities are stressed. Church location, parking facilities, building and grounds maintenance, security issues, food service, and vehicle needs are examined.
Part 11: Miscellaneous issues in this final chapter include the following: beginning a church library; starting a private school; using multi-media (television, radio, internet, etc.); ordination of pastors; childhood conversions; and, preparing a congregation for the interim when key staff members resign.

Evaluation
Strengths: Letters to Timothy achieves a good balance between dealing with people in ministry and offering practical, step-by-step procedures and structure to lead various ministries. Many small, well-indexed chapters make this an ideal quick reference guide. Readers will be encouraged by the use of applicable Scripture references and Bisagno's encouragement to follow the Holy Spirit's leading. Bisagno's personal and practical insight are invaluable to anyone entering the ministry.
Weaknesses: 1) Bisagno makes the statement that "virtually every significant movement of God in history began among students" (page 283), but provides no documentation to uphold this claim. 2) Although Bisagno challenges believers to examine their hearts when partaking of the Lord's Supper, he confesses (on page 179) not to know (or even desire to know) all that 1 Corinthians 11.27 means. 3) It was disappointing that Bisagno recommends ignoring phone calls of fellow pastors seeking personal references for former staff members that cannot be recommended in good conscience (pages 301-302). A pastor must be willing to warn others (discreetly) of possible problem areas.

Recommendation
Because Letters to Timothy covers nearly every area of local church administration, I would recommend it to anyone in Christian ministry. Pastors, elders, deacons, committee members, Sunday school teachers, or church staff will find useful and practical insights and suggestions.

A Practical Must-Have for Every Seminary Student

If you are considering going into full-time ministry this book is chock-full of practical advice on service schedules, your personal calendar, working with committees, funerals, weddings, and many more areas of service they do not teach you in seminary. In addition to all of these "nuts and bolts", the book has a strong spiritual core, emphasizing your own devotion and time with God.
This book would help someone with a romantic view of ministry consider the real life challenges. It would help seminary students round out their training. And, it would help anyone in ministry learn from a master.
As a female, the assumption that the minister and deacons are male was annoying but understandable considering the background of the author. I am very grateful for this useful book!

Advice worth taking for a pastor

This book offers practical advice for pastoring a local church especially a Southern Baptist Church. It is quick reading. I read 10 chapters in about 45 minutes. This book was not written to be a literary classic. It was written to be practical advice concerning leading a local church. As a pastor of many years, I was greatly encouraged and enlightened. Bisagno does not give all of the theological foundation for his practical advice, though there is theological foundation for the majority of what he writes. It is a book written as if an elder pastor is sitting down with a young pastor and telling him basic, everyday advice. Respectfully, I suspicion that those reviewers who express disillusionment about this book probably have never pastored a local church very long. "You can't manage spiritual issues, but you can't spiritualize management issues." There are some management issues that are real in leading a local church. You can't organize a church out of a prayer problem . . . the church needs to pray. But you also can't pray and suddenly expect the church to be organized for ministry. In prayer and the leadership of the Holy Spirit of God, I have learned that God does lead me as a pastor to humbly incorporate basic organizational principles in leading the church under his tutelage. No pastor of a growing church can get away from the balance of the Holy Spirit's anointing and applying that anointing to practical, everyday decisions. This is an excellent resource.

Great Commentary

I love this commentary and see it as a valuable reference when studying the Bible. My only regret is that, as far as I understand, they have yet to create to create a similar commentary for the Old Testament. This Bible reference tool provides insight into especially areas in importance to women, as well as commenting throughout the New Testament.

I really like how this is written. So many times I will be reading something and just can't pinpoint what the idea or meaning may be. This definitely explains the text and in a way that you can understand. The only thing I am disappointed about is it is only for the New Testament. I hope they write one for the Old Testament soon!

Better than buying a skeleton

For $0.01, this was a great reference for the skeletal system. The images and labeling were very clear. There is a small portion for muscles, blood vessels, and nerves that weren't too useful.

Amazing anatomy book, just like the Human Bodies exhibit

This reminds me a lot of the Human Bodies exhibit. This book is all pictures of actual body parts, with a ton of labels on each picture. And, just like the Bodies exhibit, it has bodies displaying different things, like skeletens, muscle systems, skull bones, etc.

It's a great way to learn anatomy very quickly. I'll probably get a few of these for gifts for my friends.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field - including those of former students, now in health careers - that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings InterActive Physiology® CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the InterActive Physiology® 9-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society, where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

Best Lab Book Ever

This A&P lab book is well written and easy to follow. The pictures are diagrams are accurate and clear. It's a great tool to visit before you dive into the textbook for the A&P class. I would recommend this lab book to any student!

Late, and not in the condition expressed.

I bought this lab manual at the exact same time as two other books from another dealer and the others arrived 3 business days earlier (Same Shipping Rate). The book came to me with badly twisted up spiral binding which prevents it from even opening properly and the entire thing is scribbled on with pen (Lots of incorrect answers). So far I have also found 11 pages missing from the book. Do your self a favor and buy from another seller even if it means paying a bit more for your books.

A Must For Those Looking Into Intercessory Prayer

If after reading this book your prayer life isn't affected you are blue and twitching on the ground, and breathing your last! Dr. Thompson does a comprehensive and Biblical job treating Intercessory Prayer interspersing each chapter with personal, practical experience. This is NOT a dry discourse, but a book filled with energy to change your life. It did mine!

Well worth your time

There are so many books on the market right now on every topic. This one seems no different. It is hard to choose which books are worth your time. I was required to read this for a Christian Discipleship class in college. It completely changed my life. I have given it to friends and family. Many of them are busy people, but I give it to them with a promise, "This is worth every second you spend on it; this will change you life."

Oscar Thompson gives you a glimpse of the heart of God towards people. It is not another "method" to seek converts. He shows you how to effectively love people.

Read this book. It is worth every bit of your time and money. Evangelism starts in the heart of God. Be a person after His own heart.

I read this book in school and I was blown away. The book made me think! It has radically changed the way I treat my family, neighbors, and those I may only meet once. This book also made me rethink ministry and do things 180 degrees differently. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to better deal with people, and who wants to grow in wisdom and sensitivity in the area of people skills. It will give you a passion for your life and ministry. As I teach others how to minister to people and how to tell others about Jesus, I use the principles in this book.

Fills an essential gap

This is one of the most important books I've read in the past five years. I say it fills a gap because of the way it so clearly addresses the specific topic of spiritual "seduction." The anonymous reviewer of 3/26/02 did a good job of describing what that is and is not. In contrast to the willfully disobedient or rebellious person, the seduced person may creep by almost imperceptible steps to a spiritual disaster he could not have imagined could happen to him.

Moore is compassionate without being soft. She does not excuse the sin or the sinner, but her harsher words are for those who those who are ready to throw the first, second, and third stones.

The book is very practical in terms of the risk factors for being seduced, how to arm ourselves, how to get help from God and others when we have fallen, and how to be a godly helper to someone else in the situation.

As a missionary doctor with some background in counseling and with some member care responsibilities, I can say that this book (or something else like it, which doubtless exists though I don't know what) should be essential reading for pastors, counselors, lay leaders, missionaries, and anyone else with leadership and pastoral responsibilities. Beyond that, it would be valuable reading for anyone serious about his or her spiritual life.
