Blazing a trail for racial reconciliation through story.

Elvon Reed-Borst, one of the women telling her story in this book, wrote the following in a journal she kept as a young girl. It sums up what I feel this book conveys. She wrote, "Some people go down a worn path; I will go where there is no path and I will leave a trail." Echoes of Robert Frost. Elvon, Pamela Toussaint, Jo Kadlecek and Andrea Clark have chosen the "road less travelled on..." Without melodrama, overly subjective confession or sentimentalism, each women opens a dialogue with the reader regarding issues such as: racial reconciliation, growing up in Urban America, Suburban America, the South and the North and the community of faith. The book is so engaging because of the way it is set-up. It is split into three stages of their lives, called: Coming Up, Coming of Age and Coming Together. This structure allows the reader to view each woman's story as if viewing a play in which the stage is sectioned off in fours. Each voice is distinct and individual yet their stories overlap as we watch them meet each other in various ways. Not unlike the four gospel writers (if I may be so bold in such comparison)they describe the same events from their individual viewpoints and in the process we get to know them, Christianity and the racial issue in a more intimate and well-rounded manner. We see the issues raised through female dialogue and three-dimensional story . We also understand what Christ meant when he said, "I call you friend..." because the lives of these women, their mutual admiration, honesty, passion and faith reaffirms for anyone who has ears to hear that laying down one's life in whatever form that works out to be, is simply the natural state of what true Christianity is all about. This is a must read for anyone, no matter where you stand in regard to Christianity, but more so because it re-challenges us all on the issue of racial reconciliation. What are you and I doing about it in our friendships? This book is a map showing us to the trail which Elvon, Pam, Jo and Andrea have and continue to blaze for us to follow.

This book is really good if you have not taken chemistry at all

This book is really good if you have not taken chemistry at all. I did not take chemistry when I was in high school, and now I am working on pre-requisites to become a RN and chemistry is needed for the program. Read the beginning of the book and use the tabs provided to block out the answers and work through it, then check your answers to see where you went wrong.

One of my friends recommended this book to me and I purchased it yes it works and I never to chemistry in high school it makes so, so much sense to get it a really big help.

Encouraging Parents to Mentor Their Kids and Pour Love on Them

When it comes to Christian parenting, we could always use more encouragement and more instruction. Parents know and love their children better than anyone else. They must never take lightly the development of each child's spiritual identity, friendships, and societal contributions. So says Steve Keels in a new book published by Broadman & Holman called Transparenting: Mentoring the Next Generation.

The strength of this book comes from the spirit in which it is written. Keels has an obvious love for children and students, and his love is contagious. He believes that parents are the perfect ones to influence this emerging generation for Christ. He reminds parents that they have an indescribable love for their children, they know their children better than anyone else on earth, and their children have been entrusted into their care for this very purpose.

Keels stresses the importance of identifying the basic character traits of our children in order to better understand their strengths and weaknesses. Knowing what makes them tick helps us to mentor them in wisdom. He directs parents to discern the spirit of the age, and to recognize when our children are being negatively influenced by the voices of the world. Only by mentoring our children in God's Word, and by living out our Christian faith with authenticity can we hope to bring them up in the Lord.

There are two excellent chapters about the relationships our children have with their friends. On one hand, he speaks about the powerful influence friends have on our children. He offers practical advice for how to help our children choose their friends wisely, and when to depart from relationships that pull them away from Jesus Christ. Keels finishes the book by discussing the pain of a rebellious child and how to steer kids away from rebellion. I really appreciate his attitude, for he stresses the importance of the heart, as opposed to getting bent out of shape over mere external behavior. He writes, "It's interesting that our view of law, grace, and forgiveness greatly affects how we raise our kids. If a parent has a habit of seeking forgiveness from God on a regular, even daily basis, he's much more likely to raise his kids in a grace-and-truth environment." Because the heart of our children is the real issue, this is where we must direct the focus of our parenting.

This book is not written to be the last word on parenting. However, it is a book that will encourage you to press on with the task of parenting, and to love your children in word and deed. As such, I think this book would make a good addition to any church library.

This is a fantastic book.!

This is a fantastic book. As parents, we are not only training up our own children by word and EXAMPLE, but we have an opputunity to reach thier friends. This book teaches parents/youth leaders too, how to "tap into" the lives of kids, inquire of them, interact with thme, make them feel safe, loved and cared for by making our home the place to hang out. Food is required :) This is my second copy, I left the other with a friend who couldn't put it down and also passed it onto to her friend. A MUST READ!!! A challenge to all parents to instill Godly virtures, respectfulness, and face 2 face social skills.

An Excellent Resource for Seminaries and Congregations!

The late Franklin M. Segler set the momentum for the unique parameters of this excellent resource in his first publication of this book in 1967. Since 1974 when this became my first choice for a basic text for Seminary classes at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), enthusiasm has increased among students and other faculty members who use it. This is no doubt caused by editorial changes - updates and additions by Randall Bradley. As a basic text for the first course in Christian worship, students are able to examine the meaning and means of expressing and experiencing worship in ways that enhance and support denominational and cultural differences in the ecumentical setting of ITC. Information is presented by the authors under three major headings with an excellent conclusion section and the kind of appendices that every clergy person requests during and following the basic course. The structure is a follows: Part 1: The Meaning of Worship; Part Two: The means of Expressing Worship; and Part Three: Conducting Worship. Appendices include examples of The Ordinary of the Mass (an excellent way to relate the Ordo to Protestant "Orders of Service"), Guidelines for Prayer leaders and Scripture Reader, the Wedding Ceremony and Wedding Policies, the Funeral Service and copyright guidelines, all of which are immediate and practical concerns of students who are most often serving as pastors in large and small congregations. For students of liturgy - practically and academically oriented - this unfolding of information connects one with the whole of liturgical history without bogging one down into ONE particular tradition. The broad usage of this resource is evidenced as the manager of the campus book is constantly re-ordering Segler/Bradley for the parishes of students and graduates in the USA and on the continent of Africa. A loud expression of thanks is extended to Professor Bradley who not only provides inclusive language throughout the text, but also contemporizes the worship settings and includes concerns from this technological age. These factors are noted especially in chapters on "worship and church renewal," "children in worship," "architecture, acoustics and worship," "drama" "applause in worship," numerous "rites of passage" and a biblical and historical endorsement of the Christian Church year. This is an excellent and much needed resource for congregations, especially as we continue to position ourselves in the twenty-first century, amidst labels and cries that attempt to separate "praise" from the worship of God with spiritual growth, dedication, and commitment to mission and ministry in the world!

Good at contrasting and comparing Christianity and Mormonism

After reading the reviews about this book by others on Amazon, I half-way expected an Ann Coulter-style rant that lacked anything in the way of true comparison or fact. However, I was pleasantly surprised. You have to read the entire title though to know if it is for you. It is not just "Mormonism Unmasked", instead it is a true comparison between the beliefs held by Christians based on the Holy Bible and those held by Mormons. Therefore, it assumes you are already a Christian and its purpose is to show that Mormonism deviates from Christianity in important and essential ways. If you are not already a Christian, you will probably not be pursuaded by the arguments in this book.
Therefore, this book will probably not pursuade any Mormon to abandon his or her beliefs. From those Mormons I have engaged in conversation on the matter, they are already aware that there are contradictions between LDS writings and those in the Bible, and even between LDS writings of Joseph Smith at one point in time and another. They just attribute it to a matter of "continuing revelation" from God to man. Also remember that Mormons believe the entire church was "lost" from the time that the Romans adopted Christianity until Joseph Smith restored it. Thus they could just attribute deviations between the Bible and their own LDS writings to errors that were introduced into the Bible by uninspired and even corrupt men during this "lost" period.
It is hard for someone to renounce beliefs they have probably held since childhood, especially if it would cost them their friends, family, and entire way of life. After all, if you were born and raised in Algeria, do you have any doubt that you would be a devout Muslim, convinced of the absolute correctness of that religion? Therefore I would recommend the book to Christians who want to know why Mormonism is not Christianity, but don't expect any miracles of evangelism to proceed from it.

A PROVOCATIVE CRITIQUE OF THE LDS CHURCH

At the time this 1998 book was published, R. Philip Roberts was the director of the Interfaith Witness Division of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention; co-author Tal Davis was the associate director, and Sandra Tanner is an ex-Mormon researcher. He notes in the "Acknowledgements" section, "Tal (Davis) wrote the first chapter of the book, the fictional narrative about Dennis and Sue, and contributed chapters 5 and 7. Sandra (Tanner) wrote chapters 3, 4 and 9."

He points out, "At some point in the chain, there had to be at least one God who did not get his existence from a previous god. This God would have to be self-existent: that is, his existence would not come from a source outside of him; rather, he must have always existed as the uncaused cause of everything else that exists." (Pg. 51)

He charges, "The truth is that Mormons cannot escape the sordid implications of their view of Jesus' conception. If, as Mormonism certainly teaches, God the heavenly Father is a being of flesh and bone and possesses a sexual nature, then one is inexorably led to the conclusion that Jesus' conception involved some kind of sexual component... Does it not, at least, seem that God had sexual relations with his own spirit-daughter, making him appear guilty of incest?" (Pg. 71)

He argues, "The most serious error of Mormonism, however, is its claim that in the postmortal or spirit world one may achieve salvation or a higher level of heaven. The Bible is clear that it is appointed unto humankind to die and then be judged once." (Pg. 131)

He observes, "Another puzzling aspect of Mormonism is that there is no accounting to the membership of church funds. They are never informed as to the amount of the 'modest living allowance' given to their top leaders. In Christian churches the financial statement is a matter of public record. There is no guesswork as to the amount a local congregation pays its minister." (Pg. 144)

This is a book that will be of interest to critics of the LDS Church.

Author seems to have done his homework

R. Philip Roberts gives a very comprehensive review of some of the beliefs of the Mormon church. As a witness to several mormons, I found this book very helpful in understanding the parts of mormonism that the missionaries will NOT tell you. This book is packed with information rather than persuasive arguments, and places an emphasis on witnessing to mormons, not proving them wrong. At the end of each chapter is a very helpful table called "Witnessing Points" which tells christians what issues to target when speaking to a mormon. Each chapter very clearly (using tables) contrasts the differences between christianity and mormon beliefs. Reading some of the other reviews, I have to clarify that this book was written for christians to understand the reasons why mormonism is a false religion(and definitely not christian!), so I wouldn't expect mormons to have a high opinion of it.

Makes Jackson seem like Casey Stengel

I'm a physics grad student who has been struggling with J.D. Jackson's book for a semester now. In my endless search for anything and everything to help explain Jackson's 'explanations,' I came across this fantastic book at the library. Very new, published February 2005, and quite up to date. His explanations are exceedingly clear, derivations easy to follow (though not watered down any), and mathematics precise. He covers all the standard topics- Green's functions, Legendre and Bessel equations, gauge transformations, waveguides, ... all the stuff at the heart of any grad-level E&M course. He even does so at the level of Jackson. But somehow he manages to avoid the 13 pages of math for each concept that Jackson introduces.

I'd strongly recommend this book to any fellow student, whether seeing the material for the first time or studying for quals. You should note, however, that Franklin chooses to use cgs throughout (something which I appreciate- I share his view that SI bogs down the equations and theories in E&M). For what it's worth...

Initially, Franklin introduces each topic in the most general way, and proceeds to explain the "special cases," so as not to overwhelm the learner immediately.

His approach is quite straightforward, which helps one to gain an understanding of the underlying principles without being drowned by unnecessary information.

Prophecy You Can Understand

I have just finished Robert Jeffress' excellent book As Time Runs Out, A Simple Guide to Bible Prophecy and this is a book anyone can understand and take to heart. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to see the big picture of the end times scenario and a simple but informative explanation of the specifc events that will take place during this time. His illustrations and timeline charts of the end times make it very clear and easy to understand when these events will take place. I hope and pray many people will get this book and not just read it, but take it to heart.

I love how Dr Jeffress gives easy and pratical examples all throughout the book. He is always quick to give an everyday example to back up different ideas. This book gives an easy to read roadmap to future events. It has really caused me to think more deeply and take the truths squarely to heart.

Biblically accurate

I've been studying the bible for thirty-four years but have stayed away from End Times prophecy. Why? It always seemed so frustrating to understand. I figured, who cares? I believe in the Rapture and I won't be here anyway. LOLOL, but when neophyte believers asked me about the End Times, I felt perplexed. I now know it very well because of this book. I can quote accurate scripture to support the insight I have. Being able to appropriately quote scriptures is of vital importance to me. Why would anyone take you serious if you are droning on about what "you think" the bible says? "It is of no private interpretation." This book will remain in my opinion, fixed, immutable, and classic. Thank you Dr. Jeffress for making it simple for all of us to understand what is going to come to pass.
