I'm glad I had access to other physics textbooks

This book is far too condensed to be of much use. It's cheaper, and the reading assignments feel less intimidating (4-5 pages instead of 20), but you spend just as much time reading those 4-5 pages as you'd spend reading 20 in a different text. You'll also be more frustrated and less enlightened at the end of it.
One of the maddening things this book does is it refers constantly to stuff that exists in previous chapters, figures, examples, and blurbs. You wind up flipping through the book looking for the pieces of the puzzle before you can even begin to understand what the text is telling you. Also, when you're looking for equation 26.2, you're sure to be tripped up several times by running across figure 26.2, tactic 26.2, or example 26.2. So... the book makes you constantly flip back and forth and then makes it as difficult as possible to find what you're looking for.
Our class kept encountering wrong answers in the back of this book. It's not very fun to do a difficult electricity or magnetism problem, then redo it for hours because you don't realize the answer in the back is incorrect.
I was very glad I had access to a complete copy of Giancoli's Physics for Scientists and Engineers. I eventually gave up on Essential University Physics (except for the problem sets) and did all my learning from Giancoli. It's huge and expensive, but it lays everything out in great detail.
My advice: if this textbook is absolutely required for class, rent it. If it's just required for homework, borrow it from your school's library (most bigger schools have a restricted section that lets you look at the course textbook) and write down the problems you need to do. Use the money you've saved to purchase online access to or a used copy of a better textbook, like Giancoli (or some others people have recommended).
Purchase this textbook only if you are already familiar with this subject and just want a condensed refresher that takes up 1/3 of the shelf space.

content matches the title

some odd 25 years ago i took an undergraduate course in physics based on the 3 volumes of Alonso-Finn "Fundamental university physics".
Keen to brush up on my rusty knowledge of classical physics i've been browsing the market searching for a present-day introductory university course on physics. This book more than fulfilled my expectations.
It's comprehensive, concise, well-structured, a joy to read, and above all, from an educational point of view, the best book on physics i've ever read. It's so easy as a student to get the wrong conceptions in your head, and once they're there, they usually stay there for a very long time. Richard Wolfson brilliantly avoids this pitfall - he knows exactly where students are likely to misinterpret certain equations or ideas in physics, and he does a splendid job making sure the students get all "the big ideas" right from the start.
I would not only recommend this book to students of physics, but to everyone interested in the most beautiful of all sciences. If only there were more educators the likes of R. Wolfson.

A very good minimalist approach to general physics - no fluff here

I took the two-semester introductory sequence in general physics two summers ago, and the two volumes in this set were used. I found the books very comprehensible, and coming from a mathematical background, I was glad that the book didn't try to sidestep the maths of physics to accommodate the odd pre-med student that might only be taking physics for some requirement and hate the very idea of taking maths past the first semester college level. Yet, I feel, even for those people, the book served as a decent enough introductory feature on the bare-bones basics of certain parts of vector calculus.
What I like best about these volumes is that they do an excellent job of trimming the fat and producing distilled chapters that get to the important concepts that one is supposed to learn in the first two semesters of general physics. This takes a lot of the tedium out of reading the book, and it presents the material with such clarity that I was able to grasp all the concepts I needed to even when the professors in the courses weren't able to do so due to spending so much time going over homework for people that couldn't think to do the problems on their own (problems, which, by the way, were always relevant to the material of the chapter and manageable). All this and the two volumes put together cost a fraction of what one normally has to pay for a big, thick book with some intimidating title that has exactly the same material but with a lot more "fat" in the form of entire chapters dedicated to applications to whatever it is the author might be interested in or long-winded explanations that try in futility to present physics without calculus.
The main cons for these volumes concern the fact that they were written as a bare-bones physics text for students rather than as a large, everything-included text that one could keep on his shelf as a useful reference for years to come. I'm sure that many people continuing in physics would like the extra fatty chapters on how to apply physics to specific problem areas, since working it out on one's own from scratch when there already exists an easy reference is simply wasteful. For this reason, the book is not as useful as a reference as some other texts might be. That said, it has a good overview of trigonometry and some first-year calculus in the appendix as well as some useful facts. Even with those, however, the book is definitely far stronger as a tool for learning physics than it is as a reference, and thus its lack of usefulness in the latter category may be a serious issue for some. I also think the chapter on interference and diffraction would have benefited from being lengthened or split into two chapters, since there are parts that depend a lot on being able to visualize concepts from blocks of words that should have had more descriptive figures accompanying them (the Michelson interferometer in particular comes to mind).
Overall, I like the two volumes and think they're great as a learning tool - granted, I already had experience with multivariable and vector calculus as well as differential equations before taking the course that used these, but I can honestly say that most of the material in the book looked perfectly comprehensible for even someone that only had the first semester of calculus. Some notation from vector calculus in the electricity and magnetism part of the second volume may look a little weird to people who have not taken a course that covers such material, but the author does a good job of explaining how to work with those equations. It's a minimalist, no-nonsense approach to teaching the two-semester sequence in general physics, and I'm sure anyone looking for such an approach will have few issues with the book.
