About the Author

Scott Powers recieved his B.S. in physical education from the University of Georgia before going on the get his Ed.D. from the University of Tennessee and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. Scott has been teaching for over 20 years, and was named Teacher of the Year at the University of Florida in 1992. Scott served as president of the Southeastern Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine in 1986. Scott's primary area of research interest is the respiratory-metabolic adaptations to exercise. In his free time, Scott enjoys water sports: SCUBA-diving, water-skiing, and swimming in the Florida Keys.

Steve Dodd earned his B.S. in economics from the University of Alabama before going to the same university for his M.S. in exercise physiology and to Louisiana State University for his Ph.D., also in exercise physiology. He has been teaching for more than 20 years, in a variety of capacities, and has won numerous awards, including the Teacher of the Year award in 1997. He has won the annual "Instructional Resources Grant" from the University of Florida every year since 1991, allowing him to make innovations in use of multimedia in his classroom. Steve has held numerous chairs in committees at the University of Florida. His lab conducts research in various areas of muscle physiology. When he's not hard at work, Steve enjoys family outings, coaching little league baseball and basketball, sailing, and racquet sports.

I ordered this textbook January 23, 2016 for $7.84 and it was delivered in pretty good condition February 8, 2016. I ordered used because in new condition it was pretty expensive. I think the price was in the $100s. I'm creating my own home library and wanted to have a book for ever subject I studied in grade school and high school. I already have plenty of fiction, but wanted to build up a collection of reference books too since I'm now being contacted for homework help by my younger cousins. I also get curious sometimes and wanted to have easy access to facts rather than continue to strictly hit the Internet and read forums and blogs. This book covers my "Health Class"... I can't remember the actual name. It's got all the topics I get curious about ranging from diet to exercise to mental health to sexual wellness. Me likey! The book looks used, but there are no highlights or notes in it that I can see. The only complaint I have was that it was covered in stickers from being transferred bookstore to bookstore. I tried using my hair dryer as a heat gun and got a lot off the covers, but I still have a lot of adhesive residue and pieces of sticker that tore and wouldn't come off. :-( Anyway, it won't affect the information inside. I can't wait to read it when I finally go on school break... Someday, lol. It'll be a nice change from MySQL commands and HTML5 tags. :-)

It was with interest that I read the reviews here and I thought I would add my comments about "Hearing God's Voice" by the Blackaby fellows. I had already glanced at their other books, but this is the only one that I have sat down and read. As I didn't sit down and check every Bible reference used in the book, I will only say this in response to the charge of being "unbiblical": I did not notice anything overly worrying.

There were, however, a number of points in which I found this book a blessing in many respects. First and foremost was the authors' firm placement of prayer on God's terms. They emphasise the need to show the appropriate respect and awe when faced with the Lord Almighty, and not treat Him as some sounding board for own personal woes and problems. While they do not denigrate the need to pray for our worries, they are very firm in upholding prayer as God's deal and agenda, not ours. The primacy placed with God's agenda and what God wants to say to us is something of a refreshing element in this book.

In addition, they place great importance on maintaining a tight reign on sin and relationships. As a main obstacle to hearing from God, sin and broken relationships figure prominently in the Blackaby's dealing with this subject. If one does not hear from God, then the authors suggest that it is cause for some serious self-reflection. Righteousness is very much a priority here.

A third point is the prominence given to the Bible in all dealings with God. This might sound a bit like saying the sky is blue,(completely obvious), but it struck me quite deeply. The authors maintain that the Holy Spirit will never say anything in contradiction to the Bible, and they maintain the Bible's primacy in all things. They also emphasise that any message from God will not change the Biblical revelation, but apply it to one's personal situation.

I found "Hearing God's Voice" to be a revolutionary impact on my own spiritual walk with Jesus, and I am still amazed at how much I am getting from it. I have been reading the Bible more and getting much more out of my prayer times. Overall, I have to say that I am firmly in the pro-Blackaby camp on this one. This has been one of the best books I have bought. Criticisms from other reviewers do bear consideration, but I reiterate that I did not notice anything disturbing about the author's approach to the subject.

The authors have done a very good job of backing up their ideas with Scripture. The book is a wonderful book for someone who is a Christian and desires to grow and mature more in their faith. The book teaches the reader how to develop their relationship with God.

Excellent treatment on hearing God's voice

This book has been so helpful to me and to many of my friends. Henry and Richard Blackaby have done a marvelous job of describing how God speaks in the O.T. and how He speaks in the N.T. through His Word, through the Holy Spirit, through other people, and circumstances. They intersperse helpful anecdotes, conversion stories and personal illustrations from their lives throughout the book as well.

To me, the most helpful chapters were the ones dealing with how the Holy Spirit works and speaks, how to meditate on God's Word and how God speaks through His Word, how to respond to God's voice, and the helpful questions and answers.

The Mathematician's Calculus

When you are in college, the standard calculus 1,2, (maybe 3) courses will teach you the material useful to engineers. If you want to become a mathematician (pure or applied), you must pretty much forget the material in these courses and start over. That's where you need Spivak's "Calculus on Manifolds". Spivak knows you learned calculus the wrong way and devotes the first three chapters in setting things right. Along the way he clears all the confusion arising from inconsistent notation between partial derivatives, total derivatives, Laplacians, and the like.
Chapter four contains the main objective of the book: Stokes Theorem. I think Spivak does a great job in minimizing the pain students feel when faced with tensor algebra for the first time, by carefully developing only what is essential. By first developing the notions of vector fields and forms on Euclidean spaces rather than manifolds, he eases the assimilation of these concepts. There is a slight price to pay by not developing the notion of tangent spaces in terms of germs and derivations (the modern approach), but this is quite justified for the level of the book. The student who completes chapter four (including the exercises) is well-equipped to study differential geometry.
Chapter five is a brief introduction to differential geometry, a teaser if you will, for the amazing ramifications of the tools developed in the book.
As Spivak remarks in the introduction, the exercises are the most important part of the book. Spivak rewards the students in the exercises by leaving many interesting developments to them like the indefinite integral of a Gaussian and Cauchy's integral formula.
This book is a gem for the student of mathematics.

The best we have right now, but don't blink

Let me start by saying that I think this book is the best for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student who wants to learn multivariable analysis and get an introduction to manifolds. There are several reasons for this. The first thing I think this book does well is that it has interesting problems. Unlike other competitors (i.e. Munkres), who offer no interesting problems in many sections, this book is absolutely loaded with great problems. One of the problems is even called "A first course in complex variables." Let that tell you about the quality of exercises.

Another thing I like about this book is that it swiftly builds up the multivariable analysis theory without too many pit stops. One thing I hated about Munkres is that he too way too long to develop the multivariable riemann integral. Munkres takes three steps to developing it (rectangles, Jordan-measurable sets, and then open sets), and on each stage he reproves all of the facts that we know the integral should have. Spivak, on the other hand, develops the integral over rectangles, tells you in a sentence how to generalize it to Jordan-measurable sets (that's all that was needed), and then uses partitions of unity to define the more general integral. Spivak's method is faster, gives us a good look at how partitions of unity can be used, and uses the fact that the reader should be able to prove and predict the properties that the integral should have based on the assumption that we've dealt with the single variable case before. The makes Spivak a much quicker and interesting read than any other book on the subject.

While I do like this book, it is not without flaws. The general opinion is that this book is a little too terse on explanations sometimes. For example, the one example Spivak gives on how to take a derivative, he identifies that derivative of the projection mapping with the i-th standard basis element. That is, he is identifying the dual space of R^n with R^n itself, all the while not telling us. While this is a nice trick that can help us take derivatives faster, this should have been mentioned in the text. Chapter 4 is rough as well. Many times Spivak will say that a theorem is obvious in an easy case, then give you a sentence on how to generalize it to the more general case. There have been many times where I have had to write my own proofs because his were lacking in detail. My margins are full of notes and missing steps because of this. For me, this wasn't too bad because I learned the material really well by being so involved, but I can easily imagine many readers being left in the dust. However, this is a good book, and these flaws only detract one star in my opinion.

The next thing we need to ask is what do you need to read this. You will need a very solid understanding of single variable analysis. If you haven't read Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis, Third Edition yet, now is a great time to get yourself a copy. Also, you will need a strong linear algebra background. My personal favorite is Axler's Linear Algebra Done Right, but many people like the book by Hoffman and Kunze. One you have this background, this is the best place to go if you're looking for a quick lesson in multivariable analysis and your first introduction to manifolds.

After you're done with this book, you're going to have to buy a more serious book on manifolds. This book if good for getting your feet wet, but there are so many essential things left out. I prefer the books by John Lee over Spivak's Vol. I, and so I recommend you look into those.

So far Im at chapter 2 (just finished it). So Im going to update this once im done with the book.

Let me say first this is not a book to read while you are lying on bed, You absolutely need a pen, a paper, and write down the theorems, and then rewrite all the proofs, and write on your own the skipped steps. Note the author says more than one time "clearly", and those "clearly" are kinda clear, however proving them will take space, and I think they need to be proven anyway, to get a better grasp on material.! (sometimes if you think the clearly is not near clear, then maybe your thinking wrong, rethink about the problem).

Anyway, whats BEST about this book, is that it "is carefully developing only what is essential" to get to manifolds (which I never studied b4). But comparing this book to other books, Other books introduce LOTS and LOTS of material, that you really might not need to know ALL of it to get to manifolds. I am not saying all those extra material are not important, but to simply study the subject of manifolds, you really do not "need" them.

this book is five chapters:
1)Functions on Euclidean Spaces
2) differentiation
3) Integration
4) Integration on chains
5) Integration on Manifolds

IT might sound trivial for grad math books, but this book does NOT have solution to the exercices at end of book, however, some of the excerices have hints just right after the statement of the problem, and I think they are kinda solvable.

True, not so many examples provided in the book, however, if you sit and write and prove theorems, then you should be able to create your own example, and more like discover things!

Simply, if you love studying Math, (some say torture urself with Math), then that's the right book for you.

I can not but give 5 stars for this book. Overpriced, not many examples, WHATEVER, The name of the book is calculus on Manifolds (not advanced calc 2 or real analysis 2), and thats what you will absolutely find in the book.

now that I'm done with the book. It has been a great experience, especially it's my first exposure to manifolds (also differentials). However, I think this book really lacks examples. If I was not studying this book as independent study with a professor, I would have learned some wrong concepts on my own (especially in the section about n-cubes, examples by the author were REALLY needed there to clear any confusion). The way I studied this book is that I read it, try to rewrite all the proofs on my own rigorously including all the left-out details, then go to my professor, he will give more intuition, and I try to come up with examples in his office. It's been great, I learned a lot. I still think lack of examples is a problem. Though wud not want to change my 5 stars.

Now I think studying this book as second (at least not first) exposure to the material would be a lot better, That's if you are studying it on your own! However, IF you have extra time and IF you can discuss the material with a professor everytime you read a section, and He can direct you to develop the right examples, then this book is GREAT (and I think can be covered in one semester)!

At the time this book was published in 2002, Jimmy Davis was professor of Chemistry, and Harry Poe was professor of Faith and Culture at Union University in Tennessee. They wrote in the Preface, "This book does not propose to break new ground so much as it hopes to make some established pathways clear. We expect our audience will be drawn primarily from Christians who take an interest in the relationship of modern science to their biblical faith... We write from the perspective of faith. Not only do we believe that the universe was designed, but we also know the Designer. How compelling is the evidence, however, for someone who does not know the Designer? Can someone come to know the Designer by observing the Design? How does the evidence compel only one conclusion about the origin of the design? The book explores why the notion of the design of the universe should suddenly reappear at the end of the twentieth century after its supposed demise at the hands of Darwinian naturalism." (Pg. xv-xvi)

They point out, "we do well to recognize that different groups in the conversation mean different things when they say `design.' ... This is not merely a matter of different religious perspectives. An engineer will understand design in a different way from a biologist. Design may have a more mechanical quality or a more artistic quality. It may mean a sense of order or purpose. It may mean a recognizable pattern. As we explore the question, we will begin to see that design itself may be as elusive as God." (Pg. 10)

They also observe, "the design argument has developed over the centuries from a general statement about what the casual observer might notice about the universe and its structure to what the trained specialist in precise fields of science might investigate under the most rigorous of circumstances. As we shall see, the new explanation of design focuses on scientific research and its implications." (Pg. 78)

They state, "Working within a materialistic worldview, many scientists were very surprised to discover that the existence of life requires a fine tuning of the universe. Everywhere scientists looked, they found very little leeway in how the universe was put together... The size of the Big Bang and the current strength of gravity are needed for there to be enough time for life to appear. Also, all the billions and billions of stars and galaxies are needed to provide enough matter and space for a stable universe to exist long enough for life to exist." (Pg. 91-92)

They note, "Rather than being one planet among billions, Earth now appears to be the uncommon Earth, the rare Earth... by placing the sun far from the center of a spiral galaxy; locating Earth in a habitable zone of a typical star; ... providing Earth with the moon to stabilize its tilt angle and the climate of the Earth; providing Earth with the `right' amount of carbon, oxygen, heavier elements, and water; and providing plate tectonics to rebuild and replenish the earth. The data implies that Earth may be the only planet `in the right place at the right time.'" (Pg. 107)

They argue, "What about the argument that science is guided by the principle of uniformity, or that existing processes can explain past processes?... the principle of uniformity should be neutral in regard to the kind of cause. In our everyday experience, the only sources of information are intelligence. Around us, we see intelligent agents creating newspapers, books, musical scores, computer programs, plans for buildings, and so forth. The principle of uniformity suggests that intelligence was involved in the origin of DNA. Currently this seems like the strongest evidence for design." (Pg. 205)

They suggest, "the problem of pain and suffering is the problem of incompletion. The presence of pain and suffering does not preclude design. It is the design of the artist, however, rather than the design of the engineer. It is the artist painting on a great canvas. It is the sculptor chipping away at an enormous block of marble until all of the roughness is gone and only the design in the artist's mind remains. It is the play in progress. It is the song being sung. The Hindu might say that it is the dance of the dancer that only exists as the body of the dancer moves." (Pg. 224)
