Just completed an A&P class using this book as the text...

...and I've got to say, this book is heavy going.
It was certainly my perception -- and seemed to be consensus among many of the students -- that this textbook is mediocre. Several of us in the class were also taking medical terminology in another class; about midway through the class we discovered that each of us had separately taken to using our medical terminology text ("Language of Medicine," Chabner) as our primary text for the A&P class also, because we all found it much more user-friendly and felt we were absorbing a lot more information than we were with this book. (And this subset of the class appeared to be doing considerably better on exams than the rest of the class as a whole.)
If this is the designated text for a class you're taking, you don't have a whole lot of choice (but you might consider buying the Chabner book too, to lower your stress level!); but if you DO have a choice, I wouldn't recommend this book.

A superior survey text of human anatomy and physiology.

Marieb's latest edition provides the beginning anatomy student with a readable and informative text. The reading level is best suited to undergraduate students, and the photographs and diagrams stimulate student interest and understanding. Especially useful are the sections on "Developmental Aspects" of anatomy, which includes morphological and physiological changes from embryonic to geriatric stages. While this edition includes updated information since the 1997 edition, some professors and students may prefer the 5th edition (1997) because it is in hardback; the 6th edition is available only in paperback as of this review. Either edition is superior to other texts aimed at similar audiences on the basis of its clarity, readability, and organization.

Good intro book

The Marieb textbook is a pretty good introduction to anatomy textbook. Obviously everyone has their own tastes and I would emphasize some topics more and de-emphasize others. I would say this book is middle of the pack when it comes to illustrations, review questions, and definitions. The labs that accompany this book are not very good.

Writes like Luke is making this up.

I am a quarter through this book and I will go no further. Stein has the irritating habit of commenting as if Luke made some of the biblical stories up and decided to put them in place to prove this or that point. I just wanted the passages explained to me by a good biblical mind. This is the first book in The American Commentary Series which I have been disappointed with. You can't write these commentaries as if the author is a story teller picking and choosing what to write. Wish I could get my money back.

This is an okay commentary, but I was expecting more. It is nowhere near as in-depth as my RT France commentary on Matthew.

Capable and Useful

Stein's commentary does a good job of balancing technical specifics with the broad themes and message of Luke. Though his writing style is readable, his terseness can be irritating at times -- one wonders whether a complete technical treatment of Luke (or any other gospel) can be adequately set forth in only one volume.

Stein's outlook is decidedly conservative Baptist, but his treatment is even-handed. My main complaint is the amount of time Stein spends rebutting more critical (i.e. liberal) views of Luke. His rebuttals are overly brief to the point of being cryptic, and few of them are footnoted, leaving one to wonder whose views are being rebutted. Because the rebuttals are so brief, a beginner would find them confusing, while an expert would find them conclusory and unsupported. Personally I would have preferred more emphasis on pastoral application than on responses to criticism, but then again, I'm a layman, not a professional scholar.

For a pastor or teacher who chooses this commentary, I would recommend using it in combination with a commentary that has more emphasis on the pastoral. I was very happy using Stein in conjunction with J.C. Ryle's commentary.

Great preaching tool for Pastors!

I have used this book as one of my main resources as I preached through Nehemiah.

It gives a wide variety of information pertaining to the historical and literary contexts and settings. It does a great job of connecting the exegetical passages to other parts of the Bible without overdoing it, and I appreciated how the author often pointed forward toward Jesus and the New Testament when it was appropriate.

It does not require an understanding of Hebrew (any Hebrew is listed as a transliteration, making it very easy for people to pronounce if needed), and it does break down some Hebrew words when a fuller understanding can help illuminate the passage. The language used is pretty accessible and not overly academic.

It does have an academic feel to its footnotes, which I appreciated, though I most often found them to be not useful for my preaching.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to preach on Nehemiah. If the book is consistent, I'd assume that it would be equally valuable for work on Ezra and Esther as well, though I have not read those sections. I would recommend this book to anyone who is approaching these texts academically. Finally, I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to have have a better understanding of Nehemiah.

In my opinion, if you are preaching on Nehemiah (and Ezra and Esther), this book is a must have for your library.

    Depth and Accuracy

    Campbell and Reece are best known as the authors of the hefty and excellent "Biology", now in it's 6th edition used by undegraduate biology majors and AP Biology students.
    "Essential Biology" uses a different approach. The authors have packed a great deal into this amazingly small textbook. I recently reviewed a huge number of introductory biology texts for adoption in our school district. We use Campbell and Reece's Biology, 6th edition for our AP biology course but were looking for a textbook to use with our 9th grade honors biology students.
    After a lengthy comparison of textbooks we picked "Essential Biology" based on several things. First we found the book to be accurate, readable, and concise. We felt that it would give the students a depth of understanding in the core biological principles so that they would be ready when they moved on to AP biology later in their high school career.
    Instead of trying to "cover" everything under the biological sun, "Essential Biology" focuses on four core biological topics: cells, genetics, evolution, and ecology. It's 20 chapters are broken up into these 4 units and does a wonderful job of pulling it all together.
    Other textbooks certainly cover more material but with less depth. What is the use of having a huge textbook that the students either never finish or rush through with no real understanding? This is a textbook that the students can dig into and throughly understand during one course.
    It is supported by CD-ROM's and on-line material. The website provides activities, on-line labs, quizes, and other practice. Students can print out results or e-mail them to their teachers.
    I would recommend this text as one for use in a non-majors biology course or as an advanced high school biology introductory course.

    Brief, colorful, generally easy to read

    I used this for an intro to environmental studies class, focusing on the biological aspects of life.

    It was definitely a difficult class to labor through, but this textbook did help a bit. Filled with charts, brevity, and specifics, I was able to understand the concepts well, despite not having much experience with biology.

    Not bad, and since this textbook is out of edition now, it's a cheap alternative if you want to just brush up or is just curious about biogloy.

    Save $$, get this version instead of the newest

    I got this book instead of the most current version in order to save some money. It is pretty much identical to the current version. Same layout, words (for the most part) and pictures. My professor didn't really use the book, the book was just a study tool. Cells haven't changed much since this book came out, so why pay a billion dollars to get the same quality with the newest version? I got an A in my biology 1010 class with this book.

    About the Author

    William J. Germann studied chemistry as an undergraduate at Kenyon College and went on to earn a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Michigan. Among other biology courses, Bill currently teaches three undergraduate human physiology courses at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. Part of his work at the University consists of advising pre-medical students. Bill was recently appointed chair of the Biology Department. He is a member of the Biophysical Society, the American Association of University Professors, and the Texas Association of Advisors for Health Professions.

    Cindy L. Stanfield earned both a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches physiology to undergraduates at the University of South Alabama, where she has published numerous papers in neurophysiology. Cindy is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, Sigma Xi, and the Golden Key Honor Society.

    Easily the best

    Ignore what your classmates, kaplan, PASS and the professor say - skip the terribly mediocre and incomprehensible Guyton and Berne and Levy and pick Germann up. This is EASILY the best physio book out there. The software package alone will get you through the toughest of concepts. This is one of the best-written textbooks on any subject out there and it makes learning about the human body, with its fantastic images and awesome explanations, fun and memorable.

    Great book to read for better understanding of human body functions. There are good and colorful illustrations in it. Through the guided illustrations and simplified physiological explanations, it makes easier to connect the function of one part of the body to the other.
    Well I made good grade on my exam in anatomy and physiology anyhow ... so I can say that this book helped me a lot.

    Sweet, dean of Drew University's School of Theology and author of A Cup of Coffee at the Soul Cafe, AquaChurch and Faithquakes, among other titles, presents a myriad of modern phenomena and dares the Christian Church to be as appealing. He cites the Internet, e-mail, music and media as prime resources that our culture has taken advantage of to provide mind, soul and spirit connections. Shame on the Church, says Sweet, since it should be offering a higher measure of love, acceptance and genuine care than these quick fixes. What congregations fail to realize, he writes, is that postmoderns aren't so much interested in a "me, me, me" mentality as they are driven to participate and experience every area of life. Sweet uses the acronym "E-P-I-C" (Experientially, Participatory, Image-Driven, Connected) to define how our postmodern society functions. Specifically, Sweet offers practical steps for achieving optimal, effective connection with those outside the faith. First, Christians must "put the salve in salvation" by reaching out in love and healing. They must then master "the complex art of simple living" by decentralizing; recapture the gift of story-telling, which imparts continuity and community; and get moving through acts of service and social transformation. Despite his clear step-by-step approach, Sweet has amassed so many facts and quotes that the text is severely disjointed. Even scholars may find this weighty compilation of data difficult to digest.     Good summary of previous works

    If this is the first that you have ever heard of postmodernism and the church, this is an incredible book for you to read. If you have read some other books by Sweet, it contains some expanded but not earth shattering new insights on the church in the 21st century. Everything considered, I am glad I bought the book.

    Lacks depth, critical thinking

    If you enjoy the average popular book on the shelf of your average Christian book store, like Purpose Driven Whatnot, you may enjoy this book. It is full of short anecdotes and cute stories, some mildly challenging and some entertaining.

    If you are looking for a serious or critical discussion of post-modern thinking and how is does or does not jive with Christian thinking, look elsewhere.

    How to be an EPIC Church

    The premise in this book is that the world is moving forward and may be passing Christians by. Newsmakers, technological advances, media figures and language are all changing at such a rapid clip that the church is apt to speak and act in ways that miss those who need to hear the Gospel the most. It is Leonard Sweet's contention that we must appropriate the best of the new if we are to have an authentic witness in the postmodern world. What is the postmodern world? While Sweet does not trace its origins, the term "postmodern" has been in common usage since the early 1970s and was popularized first in the world of architecture by Charles Jenks. Claimants for coining it range from Charles Olson (early 1950s), Leslie Felding (1968) and Jean-François Lyotard (1984)-R. Albert Mohler, Jr. in "The Integrity of the Evangelical Tradition and the Challenge of the Postmodern Paradigm," in The Challenge of Postmodernism: An Evangelical Engagement, edited by David Dockery (Grand Rapids: Baker, 1995), traces the origin of the term "postmodern" to Frederico de Oniz in 1934 and its first significant use in a treatise by Arnold Toynbee in 1939.
    Postmodernism is used to express the sense that the mid-twentieth century goals and objectives (i. e. "modernism") had been tried and either been found lacking or have outlived their usefulness. Almost every other serious field of endeavor has now borrowed the phrase, as a way of saying that time is hastening on, and the field of religion is no exception. Leonard Sweet, is the E. Stanley Jones Professor of Evangelism at Drew University, whose prolific output includes works such as Soul Salsa and A Cup of Coffee at the SoulCafe.
    Sweet calls the church to become an "EPIC church for Epic Times", with the acronym EPIC standing for Experiential, Participatory, Image-Driven and Connected. In a series of chapters devoted to each of these concepts, Sweet explores each in turn, indicating how Christians might impact the larger world more effectively, while maintaining their authentic witness to the Living Christ. Prof. Sweet's contention is that the church is all too often a cerebral spectator, a word-driven environment disconnected from the larger community. He cites many examples and offers some ways that the church might put into practice so as to redress these concerns.
    In one of the more provocative sections of the book Sweet lists the various ways that Jesus was a "rule-breaker". All of them are Biblically correct, but one wonders if he would not have been better served to say that Jesus was a "rule-fulfiller" as in, "I have come not to abolish the law but to fulfill it". (Matthew 5:17). Even so, Sweet's point is well taken, as in this quotation: "Jesus even broke the ultimate rule: the law of sin and death". (Page 130). There are many good ideas in this book. One caution, however. A preoccupation with postmodern culture might obscure the timelessness of the Gospel by packaging it in current buzz words and topics de jour. Sweet seems to relish in knowing the latest trend or fad, but such things rarely last, whereas Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever.

    Biblical, practical, balanced, fresh, appropriate in scope

    Teaching in Bible college I've reviewed and used scores of texts over the last 25 years. Some have been simplistic and others mentally congest being encyclopedic. This produced raves from the students, both from its biblical insights, and from its well-written inductive review questions. It is pure, godly delight, and a great introduction to Christian education. More students wanted to change their major to Christian Education or commented that they received an exciting vision for it after this one than those before. Success is its best evidence that this is a great book.

    Eldridge was an outstanding professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and was able to leverage his relationships with other professors to compile this excellent book on the teaching ministry of the church. Contributors to the book add a wealth of wisdom to the topic.

    A Needed Tool for the Teaching Ministry of the Church

    I just finished reading this book as part of a Christian Education course for my degree on Religion and I say that this book should be placed in the hands of every Christian teacher and in the hands of those who wish to become Christian teachers. Sunday schools are usually filled with teachers who are not well trained, prepared, or evaluated. Though it is not their fault that these teachers are not prepared or trained, it happens. God deserves our best as well as the students which every week sit under the teaching of someone who is supposed to correctly explain the word of truth. Most Sunday schools classes that I have been in are usually ones that are mediocre in nature because the teacher started the class period late, they were not prepared, no objective or goal were mentioned (we got no where every time), the room was not arranged for teaching, audiovisual aids were not effective or were not present, the teacher couldn't keep the class' attention, and among other things the teacher did not encourage the students to ask questions. These and many other areas are covered in this book. Though I have 4 years as an Instructor in a military technical training environment, I know that there is much to learn in the field of teaching, especially in the teaching ministry of the Church which, mildly put, it sucks. Get this book, you won't be disappointed.

She has a diploma in nursing from Deaconess College of Nursing (St. Louis, Missouri), baccalaureate and master's degrees from Southeast Missouri State University, and a doctorate in nursing from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. She is currently an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri-Columbia.

    Dr. LeMone has had numerous awards for scholarship and teaching during her over 30 years as a nurse educator. She is most honored for receiving the Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence from the University of MissouriColumbia, the Unique Contribution Award from the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, and for being selected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

    She believes that her education gave her solid and everlasting roots in nursing. Her work with students has given her the wings that allow her love of nursing and teaching to continue through the years.

    A widow, Dr. LeMone lives with her dog and shares time with her two children and her granddaughter. When she has time, she enjoys growing flowers and reading fiction.

    Karen Burke has practiced nursing in acute intensive and coronary care, in community-based settings, and in nursing education. As an educator, she has taught nursing skills, fundamentals, pathophysiology, and basic to advanced medical-surgical nursing. Ms. Burke has a diploma in nursing from Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon, later completing baccalaureate studies at Oregon Health & Science University, and a master's degree at University of Portland.

    Ms. Burke has been part of the nursing faculty at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon, since the inception of the Associate Degree Nursing program in 1983, most recently serving as Director of Health Occupations and Nursing. In this role, she is known as a leader and an innovator. She led the nursing faculty in developing an online program to deliver basic nursing education to a distant rural community. This program continues, serving as a model for other community college nursing programs to reach out to geographically isolated communities. Ms. Burke is actively involved in nursing education and developing strategies to address the nursing shortage in Oregon. She is a member of the Oregon Council of Associate Degree Nursing Programs (OCAP) and the Oregon Nursing Leadership Council (ONLC), currently serving as chair of the ONLC Education Committee. She is coauthor of several other texts: Medical-Surgical Nursing Care, with Priscilla LeMone and Elaine Mohn-Brown; Fundamentals of Nursing: Concepts, Process, and Practice (6th edition), with Barbara Kozier, Glenora Erb, and Audrey Berman; and a clinical handbook to accompany this text.

    Ms. Burke sees herself as a nurse first, then a nurse educator and educational administrator. She strongly values the nursing profession and the importance of providing a solid education in the, art and science of nursing for all students entering the profession.

    When possible, Ms. Burke and her husband Steve spend time with their extended family and traveling. She enjoys a passion for quilting, and, when the weather allows, gardening.

    At no other time in recent history has there been a greater need for nurses. In fact, the need for new nurses is projected to be at or greater than 1 million by 2010. Registered nurses are the largest group of health care professionals in the United States, numbering over 2.6 million. However, various forces are in effect that may decrease their numbers or challenge their ability to meet client needs. As our currently employed nurses age and retire, the population will also become older. As the population ages, more people will develop chronic illnesses and disabilities that require skilled nursing care.     Students are expected to build on a knowledge foundation of basic sciences, social sciences, and fundamentals of nursing to synthesize and critically analyze new knowledge necessary to provide holistic care that addresses the individualized human responses to potential or actual alterations in health. The third edition of Medical-Surgical Nursing: Critical Thinking in Client Care has been completely revised to provide you with that knowledge and the skills needed to care for clients to promote health, facilitate recovery from illness and injury, and provide support when coping with disability or grieving.

    The kaleidoscope cover image is a strong reflection of health care today. The meditative aspect of focusing on the images in the kaleidoscope calms and helps to integrate the mind, spirit, and body.     GOALS FOR THIS TEXTBOOK

    Although the information has been totally updated, we continue to believe that students learn best within a nursing model of care with consistent organization and understandable text. From the first edition, we have held fast to our vision that this textbook will:

    • Provide the most current information possible about the art and science of nursing.
    • Provide clear explanations of the pathophysiologic processes of human illnesses and injury, integrating that information as a vital component of treatment and nursing care.
    • Emphasize the nurse's role as an essential member of the health care team.
    • Prioritize nursing diagnoses and interventions specific to altered responses to illness.
    • Provide case studies for each major illness or injury so students can envision the client as a person requiring care.
    • Foster critical thinking and decision-making skills in clinical practice.
    NEW TO THIS EDITION

    The third edition of this textbook includes new content on cultural diversity that is integrated throughout the narrative as well as incorporated into the following feature boxes: Focus on Diversity, Nursing Care of the Older Adult, Meeting Individualized Needs, Nursing Research, and Multisystem Effects. Additionally, new content covers health promotion, gerontology, complementary and alternative therapies, genetics, and diseases specific to bioterrorism. The new health-promotion heads can be found in the nursing care section in every disorder chapter. Complementary and alternative therapies are integrated throughout the textbook where appropriate. Genetics as a risk factor or that increases incidence of a disease is included with the disorders, such as Huntington's chorea, Von Willebrand's disease, sickle cell disease, and hemophilia. Diseases are included if more prevalent as the result of inheritance (such as diabetes). Genetic counseling is included in nursing care as appropriate. Information about infections that may be caused by bioterrorism is included in Chapter 8. Based on reviewer feedback, two new chapters have been added: Chapter 12 concerns care of clients with substance abuse and Chapter 39 deals with care of clients with musculoskeletal disorders (two separate chapters in the previous edition). This combined chapter is more consistent and easier for students to follow.

    ORGANIZATION

    The book has six major parts, organized by functional health patterns. Each part opens with a concept map illustrating the relationship of each functional health pattern to possible nursing diagnoses. The parts are then divided into units based on alterations in human structure and function. Each unit with a focus on altered health states opens with an assessment chapter that provides a review of normal anatomy and physiology, questions for a health history, and assessment techniques with possible abnormal findings. Students will find a detailed health history questionnaire, using functional health patterns as a guide, on the Companion Website. Also on the .CD, students will find a comprehensive review of anatomy and physiology complete with animations, three-dimensional structures, and exercises. This draws upon the student's prerequisite knowledge, and serves to reinforce basic principles of anatomy and physiology as applied to physical assessment.

    Following the assessment chapter in each unit, information about major conditions and diseases follows a consistent chapter format. Key components of the clinical chapters include following:

    PATHOPHYSIOLOGY. The discussion of each major illness or condition begins with an overview of pathophysiology, followed by manifestations and complications. In the new edition, we have increased coverage of pathophysiology and highlighted it as a section within the disease. A new feature, Focus on Diversity, is included with some disorders to demonstrate, for example, how race, age, and gender affect differences in incidence, prevalence, and mortality.

    COLLABORATIVE CARE. Collaborative care considers the treatment of the illness or condition by the health care team. Information in this section includes, as appropriate, diagnostic tests, medications, surgery and treatments, fluid management, dietary management, and complementary therapies.

    NURSING CARE. Because the prevention of illness is a critical factor in health care today, this section begins with health-promotion information. A brief section on assessment provides a focused health history interview and physical examination guides, as well as information about assessment of the older adult. Nursing care is discussed within a context of priority nursing diagnoses and interventions, with rationales provided for each intervention. As care is increasingly provided in the home, nursing care is followed by a list of topics and resources for teaching about home care. Lastly, for each major disorder or condition, a narrative Nursing Care Plan is provided. Each plan begins with a brief case study, followed by the steps of the nursing process in action. Critical thinking questions specific to the care plan conclude this part, with a section called Evaluate Your Response that provides additional guidance for critical thinking. Suggested guidelines are found in Appendix C.

    CHAPTER REVIEW. This new section at the end of each chapter concludes with five multiple-choice review questions, to reinforce comprehension of the chapter content. The student will also find the section entitled EXPLORE MediaLink, which encourages students to use the CD-ROM and the Companion Website to apply what they have learned from the textbook in case studies, to practice NCLEX questions, and to use additional resources such as animation tutorials and more.

    HALLMARK FEATURES

    Thoughtful attention was given to existing features that students and faculty liked in the previous edition. We give them more emphasis in the new edition.

    • Manifestations boxes reinforce understanding of the effects of illness or injury, and guide assessments and interventions.
    • Pathophysiology Illustrated and Multisystem Effects features provide visual illustrations of the causes and consequences of pathophysiology.
    • Nursing Implications boxes provide students with nursing implications that they need to be aware of when their client is undergoing a particular diagnostic test. These boxes address nursing care and client/family teaching.
    • Meeting Individualized Needs boxes contain information specific to altered health, age, gender, race, and culture.
    • Procedure boxes describe common or important procedures in detail.
    • Nursing Care of the Client boxes describe nursing care for various medical or surgical procedures.

    Worked for me!!

    Although this book can seem a bit daunting at first (I mean, it's over 1600 pages!) it is a wonderful book to have. It was required for my first semester in nursing school and I found myself using it even then to write care plans and find rationales and now that I'm in the med-surg semester I use it even more to refer to pathophysiology of patients conditions, look for tips on what to watch for in every patient that could indicate possible complications, etc. It includes a brief overview of the anatomy & physiology of the following body system and also gives an detailed, indepth step-by-step "how to" for assessments of a patient, including abnormal findings. It's a great tool to have at your fingertips to make you more aware of what to look for in your patients.

    An Essential Study Guide book for success in nursing!

    I can't imagine a more helpful study guide. Full of NCLEX test questions, their answers, and an explanation of WHY it is the correct answer (in the back of the book) plus succinct yet complete outlines of the chapters and more; this is a book for students who want to learn the nursing material as quickly and as thoroughly as possible. Truly a gem of a book. Great for study/review the night before the test. I found this especially helpful with my study of Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Balance which is one of the more difficult concepts for me and many others to grasp. Use it along with the textbook, CD-ROM and companion websites for greater learning. Any time you spend in this book is time well-spent. A well-kept secret aid are the study guides to nursing textbooks which, at many schools, are "optional" to purchase, but trust me, they are mandatory for your learning! Good luck future nurses!

    Great for Nursing Students and New Grads

    This was our textbook in nursing school our final year, and I often refer to it now that I am practicing as an RN. It is well organized with great illustrations and care plans. I am shopping for a second one to keep at home - so I don't have to carry it between work and home. I also highly recommend the accompanying paperback reference - especially if you are in clinicals or write care plans. It is easy to carry with you - and you can find nursing dx, interventions etc easily for many disease/conditions.
