Judge for yourself...probably the best commentary on Judges
By Christopher B. Prentiss
This is a particularly fine example of evangelical scholarship which also interacts with both Jewish and liberal scholarship in a significant way to produce a very usable commentary for both the specialist and the informed layman.

His work in the NICOT on Ezekial is heralded by many (Tremper Longman among them) as simply the best OT commentary in print. The constraints in this series might be a bit more restrictive, but Block has managed to produce what is probably the best commentary on Judges available. (Lawson Younger's work in the NIVAC series is good too but the goal of that series is even more modest.)

Block's introductory material is almost worth the price of the book. And the commentary portion, while working verse by verse, includes an awareness of the literary, poetic and narrative concerns. He also shows an awareness of the text-critical issues when appropriate without getting bogged down, he always displays a high view of inspiration, and his footnotes are a wealth of information for the student wishing to go deeper and interact with scholarly sources.

The primary drawback to the commentary is that often after writing a page or two about one particular verse Block often fails to draw some fairly obivious conclusions on what the narrator is actually communicating. For example, he spends nearly 2 pages on the place and person names of 4:2 and suggests various possibilities concerning the issue of how Jabin could oppress the Israelites from Hazor (which had recently been decimated by Joshua), and yet he does not draw any conclusions about the narrator's characterization of Israel's request for the Lord's help being due to political oppression (that is, rather than repentance.)

Best commentary on Judges available
By David Lynden
It isn't simply that I buy everything Daniel Block publishes. I do. But, apart from the fact that he is a fine scholar, a clear-headed exegete and a solid communicator, this commentary is a must-buy for any student of the OT simply because it represents one of the few works out there on Judges. Until recently, Judges suffered from a drought of commentators. The last thorough treatment on Judges was written by Robert Boling for the Anchor series and that was back in 1975.
Block's commentary gives the reader both balanced and well-informed comments on the text's meaning as well as philological notes on the Hebrew (kept conveniently in the footnotes). It delves deeply for the more scholarly concerns, yet can be accessed by an informed layperson. Block's familiarity and usage of secondary sources, which are also listed in the footnotes, are invaluable for further study. While some quite commendable commentaries on Judges have recently appeared since Block's work, none have come close to eclipsing his fine contribution.

A Solid, Memorable Commentary on Judges
By Amazon Customer
"No book in the Old Testament offers the modern church as telling a mirror as this book." So ends Daniel Block's New American Commentary on Judges.* One might very well add, "The book is a telling mirror of American society as a whole." Block takes a biblical book describing events that took place 3,000 years ago and shows how relevant they still are through his solid exegesis of the text.

Throughout his commentary, Block reviews and expounds upon the continual decline of Israel after they entered the Promised Land, during the time of the shofetim (traditionally translated "judges," but Block uses the more technically correct term "tribal leaders"). Block traces two main themes of of Judges throughout his commentary. The first is the gradual Canaanization of Israel. In every episode, Israel and her shofetim take on more and more of the characteristics and culture of the surrounding peoples (the Canaanites), which of course is in direct disobedience of God's original command to them to completely and utterly destroy the native peoples. By the end of the book, the only people Israel attempts to destroy in this manner is the tribe of Benjamin--their own brothers and sisters! Block shows that this is the dramatic effect of acquiescence and indeed full acceptance of a sinful culture. The second main theme Block traces throughout the book is God's grace. Israel and her leaders follow and disobey the laws of God in whatever manner is most convenient for them at the moment. Although they cry out to God on multiple occasions, it is always a cry for help and never a cry of repentance. Every judge, save two (Othniel and Deborah), are shown to be poor leaders. And yet God continually saves them from destruction! As Block mentions several times, God is more concerned with redeeming his people than they are!

There are several other important topics that Block tackles in his commentary, not the least of which is the narrator's repeated observation that "there was no king in Israel." For those discussions, I would refer you to the commentary itself, which I felt was a good resource overall. Block provides the reader with the usual discussions of grammar, history and so forth that one expects in a quality commentary. I appreciated, too, how he wove the aforementioned themes together to provide his commentary and the biblical book with a good and memorable flow. On the other hand, I felt his "theological and practical implications" sections were rather weak. I would have liked to have seen some of these implications more drawn out, since Judges is so incredibly apropos to today's culture (and indeed, it was all too easy for this reader to find his own implications). I also must sadly admit that the commentary suffered from bad proofing. I have never seen so many basic grammar and punctuation errors in a published book. (I even found some of the Hebrew transliterations to be incorrect!) All in all, though, these negatives did not detract from the overall quality and value of Block's commentary, and it has become a welcome addition to my personal library.

*Note: The volume also includes a separate commentary on Ruth, which I have not yet read.

Criswell Preaches What He Believes
By Charles J. Williams, Jr.
In the world of computers, a circular reference occurs when the information in a data field is used to determine the data field's own value. Programmers must avoid circular references in software -- theologians must contend with them
In "Why I Preach That the Bible is Literally True," Dr. Criswell creates a very simple yet necessary circular reference. He "preaches" that the Bible is literally true because he "believes" that the Bible is literally true; and he "believes" that the Bible is literally true because the Bible "reveals" a God that is literally true. And if God is literally true then the literally true message of the Bible must be preached in similar manner - literally true. It's just that simple . . . period.
Dr. Criswell also addresses the manner by which he preaches the literal truth of God's Word; the beautiful, God-directed creation of man, the deity of Jesus Christ, the Bible's application to human problems, and much more.
Finally, Dr. Criswell encourages his "brethren" preachers to likewise preach the Bible as literally true. The literally true message of the Bible alone stands preeminent above spiritualizing or allegorizing the Bible or the latest theological "sophistry."
For anyone who regularly proclaims the Word of God to others, "Why I Preach That the Bible is Literally True" is a must-read. You'll find your heart racing and your legs aching to stand before God's people and proclaim with great boldness and conviction that the Bible is God's Word and people everywhere need to hear it's saving message. (Romans 10:17)

The solutions provided in this manual, while very much appreciated, do not solve the problems in a way that is easy to comprehend and follow. I would prefer an improved solutions manual that takes more time to explain the problems to a greater degree than is given.

Believer's Baptism: Sign of the New Covenant in Christ (New American Commentary Studies in Bible & Theology)From B & H Publishing Group

Is believer’s baptism the clear teaching of the New Testament Scriptures? What are the historical and theological challenges to believer’s baptism? What are the practical applications for believer’s baptism today? Volume two in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons addresses these compelling questions.

Indeed, Believer’s Baptism begins with the belief that believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism or other faith proclaiming methods) is the clear teaching of the New Testament. Along the way, the argument is supported by written contributions from Andreas Kostenberger, Robert Stein, Thomas Schreiner, Stephen Wellum, Steve McKinion, Jonathan Rainbow, Shawn Wright, and Mark Dever.

Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

An Excellent Study on Baptism
By Seeking Disciple
I purchased this book with great skepticism. I assumed that the book would be nothing more than a book defending the Southern Baptist position on baptism namely that believer's alone should be baptized (which I agree with by the way) but would not interact much with those who disagree except in passing. This is not the case with this book.

BELIEVER'S BAPTISM does a good job of first of all laying a solid biblical and theological foundation for believer's baptism and then does a good job of defending it against those who would disagree from both contemporary and from historical theologians who argue for infant baptism. Furthermore, the book allows a few chapters to be given for presenting arguments for infant baptism and for the Restoration movement view that baptism is essential for salvation. The book does not present baptism merely as a token Christian memorial but a very important biblical topic.

The chapters are not very long and the book can be easily read in just a couple of hours. While there are some theological terms thrown here and there, overall the book is an easy read and the plus is that it is full of Scripture. Overall I enjoyed this book and gladly recommend it to you all to study.

Great Biblical Interaction with various views of Baptism
By Carl A. Dixon
Another reviewer said this book can be read in 2 hours!!! I read academic books all the time and that reviewer must be an amazing speed reader. I have really been edified by this book. It explains the various views of baptism very fairly. I am not a Baptist but do believe in believers baptism. This book confirmed me in my view of Baptism and completely eliminated any intimitation of other views. The various scholars deal respectfully with all views of baptism throughout church history and then contrast them with good biblical exegesis. I doubt if many will be able to read the book in two hours - or even some of the chapters in two hours - but this will be a forever resourse on the subject of believers baptism.

great book, chapter 4 is worth the price of admission alone
By J. Caneday
Baptism is perhaps the most divisive issue of faith and practice in the Christian church, so a book, such as Believer's Baptism is sure to be received as decisive blow against paedobaptism by the Baptists, but as a non sequitur by the paedobaptists. While a convinced Baptist myself, I attend a paedobaptist church, so I'm in the unenviable position of being caught in the middle. It is true, and undeniable that the paedobaptist tradition--specifically the Presbyterians, have a near monopoly on the rich heritage of Protestant church and theology.
Nearly all my theological influences are drawn from the Reformed and paedobaptistic theologians. The Baptists, specifically the American Baptist legacy is largely a shallow, revivalistic, pietistic embarrassment. That being said, I have great respect their judgment on baptism and their faithfulness in the face of persecution.

Tom Schreiner and Shawn Wright have assembled a very competent cast of theologians, teachers, and pastors to give a defense of credobaptism and rebuttal of the paedo position. Kostenberger, Stein, and Schreiner show that "baptism is designed for believers who have repented of their sin and have put their faith in God and in his Christ." (p. 23) This is the central teaching of the New Testament in relation to baptism, and any attempt to separate the two is unbiblical. It is interesting that paedobaptists are forced to embrace this teaching, yet somehow squirm out of the implications of it. Calvin himself writes, in the Institutes, "Baptism is a symbol of the forgiveness of sins; and who could be admitted to receive the symbol but sinners acknowledging themselves as such?"

They each answer the paedobaptist arguments on matters such as household baptisms and Jesus' receiving children. The objections are solid and put holes in the paedo position, but they aren't sufficient enough in length to fully answer all the objections.

The crux of the book is Steve Wellum's chapter on the "Relationships between the Covenants." It is here that we find a full critique of the foundation of the Covenant Theology defense of paedobaptism. Wellum argues that Covenant theology fails "to do justice...to the progressive nature of God's revelation, especially in regard to the biblical covenants, the covenant community, and the covenantal signs." He argues that the term "covenant of grace" is "misleading, because Scripture does not speak of only one covenant with different administrations." He says, instead, that "Scripture speaks in terms of a plurality of covenants." The "covenant of grace" is a "comprehensive theological category, not a biblical one." He believes we should place a moratorium in using the term, as it tends to lead to a "flattening of Scripture."

Wellum then places the Abrahamic covenant in context, showing it is not primarily a spiritual covenant, but "national/physical, typological, and spiritual". Covenant theology places its emphasis on the spiritual aspects "and overlooks important differences between the Abrahamic and new covenant." This spiritual reading "takes the genealogical principle operative in the Abrahamic covenant--`you and your seed' (Gen 17:7)--as applicable in exactly the same way across the canon without suspension, abrogation, and especially reinterpretation in the new covenant era."

Wellum examines the Abrahamic covenant and then shows four ways the Bible talks about Abraham's "seed." First, "the `seed of Abraham' refers to a natural (physical) seed, second, to "a natural, yet special seed tied to God's elective and saving purposes, namely Isaac, and by extension Jacob and the entire nation of Israel", third, "the Messiah", and fourth, "the spiritual nature" including "believing Jews and Gentiles in the church." Paedobaptists lump them all together, or ignore them, and emphasize the "spiritual" aspects to the detriment of the others. This is the "flattening" to which he refers.

Wellum states, "Under the previous covenants, the genealogical principle, that is the relationship between the covenant mediator and his seed was physical (eg., Adam, Noah, Abraham, David). But now, in Christ, under his mediation, the relationship between Christ and his seed is no longer physical but spiritual, which entails that the covenant sign must only be applied to those who in fact are the spiritual seed of Abraham." He undergirds this claim by drawing Jeremiah 31 into the discussion.

This of course, leads to the bigger question of whether the new covenant community is to be a mixed one, as in the Old Covenant. Wellum answers no. He argues, "the church, by its very nature, is a regenerate community, the covenant sign of baptism must only be applied to those who have come to faith in Christ." This is "the crucial discontinuity between the old and new covenant communities". And this is "why paedobaptists consistently interpret the new covenant in `renewal,' rather than `replacement,' or better, `fulfillment' categories.

Wellum writes, "The `better' nature of the new covenant is seen in light of the perfection of Christ's work which is qualitatively better than all that has preceded. It has better promises and better sacrifices and therefore is a better covenant. What is the better nature of the covenant? It is this: because of who the Redeemer is and what he offers as a sacrifice we now have a more effective sacrifice and thus a more effective covenant; indeed, we have a covenant that `Is not susceptible to the breach perpetrated in the past.'"

Wellum then moves on to examine the relationship between circumcision and baptism. He concludes his survey, stating that circumcision and baptism "carry two different meanings. Circumcision, in a typological way, may anticipate and point to these new covenant realities, but it does not testify that all these realities are true of us." Baptism is "a covenantal sign, it communicates the grace of God to those who have faith, something which could not be said of circumcision of old."
Wellum's essay, as I said, is the covenantal backbone to the book. If you follow his argument, you'll be a persuaded credobaptist. The newer book, Kingdom Through Covenant, is a larger, more thorough examination of the covenants, and should not be missed.

McKinion's essay on the patristics and Rainbow's essay on the early Anabaptists are also critical essays in the book as they demonstrate that the early church only baptized believers upon repentance and confession. Infants were only baptized, as exceptions, when they were dying. As this practice developed, more and more churches began baptizing infants and by the time of Augustine the practice took preeminence in the church. He writes, "Prior to the third century, there are no patristic advocates for paedobaptism. Even if the inscriptions reflect an early practice of emergency baptism (which they do), they do not constitute an explicit rejection of a normative practice of believer's baptism." (p. 183)

McKinion writes, "Baptism in the patristic writings had less to do with the age of the baptized person than with the role of repentance, profession of faith, and entrance into the full life of the church."
Balthasar Hubmaier, at the time of the Reformation, began to question the practice of infant baptism and sought to restore confessor baptism. At the time, the Catholic church, argued that infants received faith upon baptism, ex opere operato (by the work performed, view.
Luther, while rejecting ex opera operato view of the Catholic church, argued that ", the infant's credo, even though not spoken by his own lips, is truly his own." (p. 183) It is clear, that the church, both Catholic and Lutheran, were faced with the dilemma of infant baptism and the New Testament requirement of faith.

Finally, it was Zwingli who brought innovation to baptism. As Rainbow writes, "he severed baptism from faith." He adds, "Zwingli identified baptism as an "external" material thing and faith as an "internal" spiritual thing, and concluded that the traditional theology had been guilty of mingling and confusing them."

He summarizes, "Zwingli concluded that just as "the Hebrews' children, because they with their parents were under the covenant, merited the sign of the covenant, so also Christians' infants, because they are counted within the church and people of Christ, ought in no way to be deprived of baptism, the sign of the covenant." But this innovation brought its own problems, as Rainbow writes, "this solution had as its price the integrity of Zwingli's exegesis of the baptismal passages of the NT and the very significance of baptism itself. For if baptism is a mere external thing, disconnected from salvation, why practice it at all?" (p. 188)

Having thus introduced the Reformed Paedobaptistic logic, Shawn Wright, evaluates the Reformers on baptism. He succinctly writes, "Reformed paedobaptists are inconsistent in relating their practice of baptism to their definition of the sacraments.3 They define the sacraments carefully and biblically. Then they contradict their own definition by their insistence that believers' infants should be baptized."
Wright notes that, "Calvin stresses the individual's active participation in the sacraments as we "attest our piety" to the Lord." He even adds Calvin's own words, "The sacraments properly fulfill their office only when the Spirit, that inward teacher, comes to them, by whose power alone hearts are penetrated and affections moved and our souls opened for the sacraments to enter in. If the Spirit be lacking, the sacraments can accomplish nothing more in our minds than the splendor of the sun shining upon blind eyes, or a voice sounding in deaf ears....the individual must exercise faith to make the sacraments effective."

Wright concludes that Reformed Paedobaptists are, "They are caught in the bind of biblically defining a doctrine and then attempting to justify an unbiblical application of it. The NT neither assumes nor justifies infant baptism." (p. 236)

Duane Garrett examines and then criticizes Meredith Kline for his novel understanding of the covenants and his consequent novel perspective on baptism.

Ardel Caneday reevaluates the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement and its emphasis on the connection between baptism and the remission of sins. He argues that the church is too eager to dismiss the Catholic doctrine of baptismal regeneration, and we consequently reject Scripture's teaching on the connection between baptism and the remission of sins. He writes:

"Some Christians, zealous to guard God's grace against any intrusion of works, regularly confuse faith and grace. Despite Paul's distinction of grace as the ground and faith as the means in Eph 2:8-9, they carelessly speak of faith as the basis of salvation and isolate faith from other biblically sanctioned means. Other Christians fail to account for Peter's startling words--"baptism now saves you"--as they confidently assert that baptism has nothing to do with salvation and that the gospel of Jesus Christ does not require it, except perhaps as a mere symbol, and that for church membership. Regrettably, confusion of instrumental cause and efficient cause leads some to regard baptism as itself accomplishing regeneration, and others to make baptism optional, with little, if any, meaning. The apostles make it clear that God saves whom and when he chooses, and that baptism is a sign of, but not the effectual cause of, regeneration. Yet, to embrace this truth and simultaneously isolate baptism from Christian conversion, whether in time or in theological expression, is an over-reaction to those embracing "baptismal regeneration." Worse, it divorces a symbol and reality that the NT holds together without embarrassment. The church and individual Christians suffer the consequences. This overly-zealous isolation of the symbol of baptism has degraded the distinguishing value and function of the symbol for individual believers and for the church."

This really cuts to the heart of the matter. Baptists, in an over-reaction to baptismal regeneration, disconnect baptism and the remission of sins, and leave the middle ground to the Reformed Paedobaptists who capitalize on this confusion and gain the upper hand against the Baptists.

And finally, Mark Dever takes up the practical questions of baptism in the church--who to baptize, when, how, etc. Dever argues for wisdom and patience in baptizing our children. He helpfully writes, "True conversion manifests itself over time. Children are childlike and trusting for a reason. To ask a pastor to try to separate out the tightly knit strands of affection for parents and for God, and to discern which is primary in a child is to ask more than may be best for the child. Time allows the child's faith to mature and evidence itself consistently."

This is an excellent volume that makes some bold arguments, particularly in laying out the groundwork for a response to covenant theology, and looks at the baptism question from a variety of angles. The structure of the book, namely that of ten different essays, all on different topics keeps the pace of the book brisk, and doesn't allow any one writer to go into great depth on any one topic. Thus the book is best viewed as an introduction to baptism. Both sides of the debate are deepy entrenched, and a volume like this is not likely to win anyone from the other side; but it does an able job of defending believers' baptism and laying the ground work for further study.

The Homosexual Agenda: Exposing the Principal Threat to Religious Freedom Today, by Craig Osten, Alan Sears

Authors Alan Sears and Craig Osten expose the goals of the homosexual movement and its rising legal activism. The homosexual agenda has as its primary aim to “trump” the rights of all other groups, especially those of people of faith. The saddest part of the story is that it is working. In 1988, 74.9 percent of the American public thought that sex between two people of the same gender was always wrong. By 1998, the percentage had fallen to 54.6 percent. Sears and Osten provide well-documented proof that America; is not only becoming more tolerant of homosexuality, through the indoctrination of children, positive exposure on TV, and the support and approval of corporate America, it is becoming less tolerant of those who disagree.

ARE WE IN THE "ELEVENTH HOUR" WITH REGARD TO GAY ACTIVISM?
By Steven H Propp
They wrote in the Introduction to this 2003 book, "In the pages to follow, we will strive to make the point that the future of our children and grandchildren is in our hands. We will outline how the homosexual agenda touches every area of our lives, from the media to education to families to corporate America and to government. We will document how the religious freedoms of all Americans are under attack from radical homosexual activists...We are at ... the eleventh hour with regard to homosexual activism and religious freedom... we can either put up a brave defensive stand, or we can let them cross the goal line unhindered. If believers choose to do nothing, there might be a day that people of faith will have to tell their children and grandchildren, `I'm sorry. I did nothing to protect your religious freedom and now it's gone.'" (Pg. 14-15)

They admit, "Unfortunately, some individuals have played right into the hands of radical homosexual activists in helping them bludgeon the Christian community on the homosexual issue... we mentioned Fred Phelps and his followers who go around the country with signs ..., picket funerals of AIDS victims, and host a website showing homosexuals being thrown into the fires of hell. Others have used less than ideal discernment in discussing the homosexual issue in the media. By not practicing Christ-like speech, sincere Christians have often been their own worst enemy in assisting radical homosexual activists move their agenda forward, especially when they are looking for the absolutely worst-case examples to prop up as representatives of orthodox and evangelical, Bible-believing Christians." (Pg. 23)

They argue, "The argument over gay marriage is only incidentally and secondarily and argument over gays. What it is first and fundamentally is an argument over marriage. Unless a government is sufficiently powerful and disdainful of religion to crush the objections of the local churches---and few governments are---gay marriage will turn out in practice to mean the creation of an alternative form of legal coupling that will be availableto homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. Gay marriage... does not extend marital rights; it abolishes marriage and puts a new, flimsier institution in its place." (Pg. 92)

This is a strongly-worded critique and call to action that will appeal to sympathetically-minded Christians, though its force may alienate others.

The duplicity and language in the authors introduction says it all
By Anthony Venn-Brown
Oh dear

The note from the authors Alan Sears and Craig Osten at the beginning says.

"While this book deals with a difficult and contentious issue, we want to state up front that both authors and the ministry of 'Alliance Defense Fund' have nothing but respect, compassion and sensitivity toward those enslaved in homosexual behaviour. Both of us have family members, respected acquaintances and friends who have been trapped in this behaviour and know something of the incredible pain and sorrow it has brought to them and their families. With God's grace we carefully balance this love and respect for these individuals with warnings about the carrying out, promotion, and demand for legal approval for homosexual behaviour that will stifle religious freedom and trap millions of more people in its deadly grip."

It goes down hill from here. The other 229 pages continue in a similar vein of duplicity, sensationalistic scare tactics, condemnation and fear-mongering.

With an enormous amount of quotes, many taken out of context, referencing, cherry picking research the authors endeavour to make a case that gay and lesbian people intend to take over the world and destroy the church and family. Oh and don't forget we are also debauched paedophiles according to authors.

Even though the endorsements at the front of the book by people such as Bill Bright, James Dobson, James Kennedy and Albert Mohler speak glowing of the work , one pastor calling it 'ground-breaking', these conspiracy theories are nothing new. It's a worn out, tired, old, vagary that has kept their prayer lives active and the church and ministry coffers full since the likes of Anita Bryant in the 1970's with her 'Save the Children' campaign.

The frightening thing of course is that there will be those who read this and it will push them further into ignorance and misinformation about the everyday lives of gay and lesbian people, their families and relationships.

The only reason I persisted and ploughed through this piece of fantastical, conservative Christian writing was for research.

Just for the record. The agenda is to be treated with dignity, respect and equality. That is all.

Has your faith been tested and you're all out of defenses?
By D. Wales
This book is not a book about post-modernism or the emerging issues of our culture. Instead this book is about the attack on the Christian faith that is emerging in our culture and besetting our young people daily in our schools. All of us are affected by the trends that occur in the culture around us, and in this book we are giving insight into just what has been happening over the past few decades to undermine the faith of younger generations. Another reviewer has said to look elsewhere for a book about post-modernism, as the person was somewhat disappointed. On the contrary I was not looking for that at all- I was looking for a way to defend my faith in a culture that says that it is irrelevant and useless. I wanted to know that not only does my faith matter, it is important to share that faith in love and compassion with others that live in this world who are culturally trained to think in a "post-Christian" mindset, as though Christianity's time has past, and it is no longer culturally acceptable to follow that faith. Other religions are having their time now in our culture, and for many it is cool and accepted to practice them, yet Christianity, the faith of this nation's first immigrants and statesmen, has been pushed to the side, its followers reckoned as foolish and backwards by many.

Yet there are many, many people who still believe. They simply do not know how to talk with others about their faith who hear their ideas through the filters of post-modernism and even anti-Christian bias. This book is very well-written and serves to fill the void in our understanding of how to reconcile our faith within our culture.

A Strong Call to Believers
By Scott M. Head
Dr. Baucham has illuminated the culture vs. Christianity conflict with clarity. His no-compromise approach is refreshing in a day of watered down faith. Living a God-honoring Christian life can certainly seem impossible for Christians with half of their mind fixed on the popular culture - Dr. Baucham calls Christians to a higher standard and makes clear the Biblical examples of the committed life. His passion is clearly evident and the research he has undertaken is quite convicting. Highly recommended for all Christians, especially those struggling with the common issues of today's secular pressures and temptations. While not a handbook of "how-tos", it is an eye opener!

Passionate and reasoned arguments
By A. Elkins
This book is wonderful, concise and hard-hitting. It should be required reading for all Christians. It's a real wake-up call for all the Gen-Xers out there. Baucham is thorough in his research and makes a valid argument time and time again. After seeing him give a lecture, I fell in love with this book even more and bought copies for five of my friends. Highly recommended.

A+
By mom_e_mae_q
I bought this for my baby sister who is 11 yrs old (17 yrs my junior)bc our mom was completely silent about issues of morality and sexuality during my teen years and I wanted my baby sis to have some moral compass at this critical time. It has been such a blessing to my sister and our mom bc it started alot of conversations between them that my mother admitted she never would have started. She thanked me profusely for giving this book to them. My sister is very curious about boys, babies, gays, and tattoos and this magazine addresses them from a Christian worldview without being "preachy" or derogatory. I was impressed by the big emphasis on purity and modesty, two things that are not addressed enough in our culture. And the "teen magazine" format makes it very appealing and easy to read.

Teen Survival Guide indeed!
By fruitloop
Vicki Courtney discusses real concerns of real teen girls frankly, truthfully and honestly without sounding preachy. I especially liked the chapter on eating disorders and fashion and the assurances that what's depicted as trendy in the fashion magazines is far from reality. She lets girls know that it IS okay to be normal....with a far more accurate portrait of what "normal" really is in today's world where girls are constantly bombarded with messages to be sexy and thin instead of simply enjoying their youth. An excellent resource for Christian parents and their girls, and for anyone else with a daughter. This is a great book for moms and daughters to read together, and would make a great gift tweens and teens. Highly recommend.

Looks like a magazine; offers great advice
By NE688
Looks like the best of teen magazines but carries real-world advice with a Christian perspective. I really liked this book! It had good, but not judgemental advice on everything from clothes, pierced belly buttons, tatoos and friends to boyfriends, sex and beauty. It doesn't go into explicit details... but it offers solid advice for teen girls growing up in tough times. I think maybe the best section is quotes from teen guys talking about what they wished teen girls knew! I plan to give this magazine/book as a gift.
