A first class resource

Exodus is a pivotal book, a key volume not only in the Pentateuch but in the whole of the Hebrew bible. And Douglas Stuart is a first rate evangelical Old Testament scholar (who has already penned commentaries on Ezekiel and some of the Minor Prophets). Put the two together and you have an important and powerful combination.

There have been a number of good commentaries on the book of Exodus. Many consider the 1974 volume by Brevard Childs (Old Testament Library) to be the best written, albeit by a non-evangelical. Good volumes of a somewhat more conservative and evangelical variety have been penned by Enns (NIV Application Commentary, 2000) and Durham (Word Biblical Commentary, 1987). But this is the newest and perhaps best treatment of the book. Part of the New American Commentary series, this just released volume will long serve as the first port of call for evangelical assessments of this important Old Testament book.

Good commentaries offer a balance of two things: the technical, grammatical, cultural and other background material, along with sound theological analysis. Both exegesis and exposition are required. This volume fulfils both requirements nicely.

Stuart has clearly done his homework. (He says he consulted over 1700 items, not all of which are featured in the bibliography.) He is up on all the relevant literature, and is aware of the current debates. He also writes well, and is able to provide the theological sense of the book, and individuals passages throughout.

Given the constraints of the series, his introductory remarks do not occupy much space (only 50 pages out of an 800 page work). But more detailed discussions of important points are scattered throughout the commentary. Thus a number of excurses into various disputed issues, difficult topics, or theological hot potatoes are interspersed in these pages. Surprisingly however one such item, the Divine name YHWH as revealed in Exodus 3:14, receives no separate excursus, but just a half page discussion (along with a half page footnote, leading the reader to further study).

While acknowledging that extra-biblical evidence for Exodus is thin, he is more optimistic than writers like Durham about the book's historicity. He also ascribes Mosaic authorship to the book.

His thematic approach to this book is to highlight the servant theme: Israel's' exodus from Egyptian servitude is replaced by servitude to Yahweh. The transition from being servants of a bad king to being servants of a good king is the overriding motif of the book, although Stuart lists eight other key themes, including the necessity of law, the promised land, and covenant relationship.

The commentary itself is a nice blend of giving the sense of the text along with the various technical considerations that need to be addressed. More scholarly discussion is reserved for the footnotes, which are plenteous and lengthy. Thus the main body of the text can be easily followed, but the numerous excurses and footnotes take the reader to more advanced levels, when deeper considerations are called for.

All in all this is a very fine commentary indeed, which should serve both student and scholar for many years to come.

Best Conservative Exodus commentary

The thing that most impressed me about Douglas Stuart's commentary on Exodus for the New American commentary series (Broadman & Holman) is the easy proficiency with which Dr. Stuart exegetes how a particular Hebrew word or phrase should be taken in context, weaves in the ANE background, and demonstrates the way the theology not only relates to Exodus and the rest of the Pentateuch, but to entire biblical corpus. Those familiar with Dr. Stuart's prior work will not be surprised by the depth of scholarship undergirding his insights here. For a conservative commentary that is sufficiently meaty but still easy on the eyes, one could do no better.

What a great book!

I picked this book up on sale unintentionally at a bargain store...what a find! My 3 boys loved this story and requested me to read it night after night...now...2 years later they are reading it to me!

Last year my oldest son brought it to his class (at a public school) to read. The teacher told him she could not read it because it talked about the Bible and Jesus. He brought it home in tears, so I consoled him. Then one day a few weeks later he came home really happy, I asked why. He told me his teacher finally read the book. I didn't know this, but the teacher later informed me he had brought the book to school every day. He began reading it, and the other kids were so interested that eventually she decided to read it to the class despite her reservations. She loved the story as did the class. What a blessing to have God's word introduced to people in a place where it is taboo. :)

"Read it again mommy"

The true test of a book is how many times it gets requested after you introduce it. My 5 and 3 yr old girls have asked me to read it over and over again. The rhythm of the text is mesmerizing. The author does an exceptional job of bringing the lessons down to a childs level. The illustrations are phoenomenal. They compliment the story beautifully. Thank you for such a wonderful teaching tool.

This book is a great one to be used for class discussion in both a church and a secualr setting. It was also good for the adults to hear, who were with the children. Important lesson in a simplified setting.

I am currently an "Undecided" student in college and bought this book for an introduction to health education class to help me decide if I wanted to pursue a career in Health Education. This book was very detailed, up to date, and helpful. I like that it concentrates on the different work environments for the career so I can at least see what my options are. Now when someone asks me what one can do with a degree in health education, I can tell them easily. I will probably keep this book for all of my college education to help me study for the CHES exam.

Great condition book

Ordered this book for my HLT 2320 class at the University of Houston. The book did arrive one day late with Amazon Prime 2-day shipping, but the book was in great conditions so I award 5 stars.

In terms of content, the book provides a great introduction to the field of health education, and a good background of the evolution of how we perceive health. The book does up play the position of the health educator plenty, but all fields do that in their respective fields!

It's decent

It is definitely entry level, definitely not exciting, but it does the job reasonably well. So well, apparently, that even though it claims to be an entry level text, my professor chose it for an upper level class. OK. There it is. It must be good, right? I say it is just decent.

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell combined the investigative nature of a research scientist with the soul of an experienced and caring teacher. He earned his M.A. in Zoology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. Dr. Campbell published numerous research articles on how certain desert plants thrive in salty soil and how sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His 30 years of teaching in diverse environments included general biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College, where he received the college's first Outstanding Professor Award in 1986. Most recently Dr. Campbell was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to his authorship of this book, he coauthored Biology: Concepts & Connections and BIOLOGY with Jane Reece. Each year, over 600,000 students worldwide use Campbell/Reece biology textbooks.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a post-doctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). As an editor at Benjamin Cummings, Dr. Reece played major roles in a number of successful textbooks. In addition to being a coauthor with Neil Campbell on Biology: Concepts & Connections, and BIOLOGY, she coauthored The World of the Cell, Third Edition, with W.M. Becker and M.F. Poenie.

Eric J. Simon is an Assistant Professor of Biology at New England college in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to both biology majors and no-biology majors, as well as upper-level biology courses in genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in Biology and Computer Science and an M.A. in Biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Harvard University. Currently, he is working toward an M.S.Ed. in Educational Psychology. Dr. Simon's diverse classroom experience includes teaching both biology majors and non-biology majors at numerous institutions, including St. John's University (Minnesota), Minneapolis Community and Technical College–where he earned an Outstanding Teacher Award–and Fordham College at Lincoln Center in New York City. Dr. Simon's research focuses on innovative ways for using technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly among non-biology major students.

wonderful book

I used this book to homeschool my 13 year old daughter, who went on to obtain a 750 on the SAT II Biology. I also taught a class to homeschoolers using THE WAY LIFE WORKS (much cheaper) as the main text, but using many of the CD-ROM activites from ESSENTIAL BIOLOGY as class material. I especially liked the MendAliens for genetics problems! There are many useful activites, quizzes, and chapter tests, wonderful graphics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand "essential" biology.

My 16 year old just finished this book for homeschool biology. It was comprehensive, thorough, yet easy for her to follow. The illustrations are excellent and prolific. It had quizes she could take to track her progress. I highly recommmend this book for high school biology.

Shiny, but missed everything fascinating

I read this textbook as part of a biology class this summer.

Overall, one could make an argument that it deserves more than two stars because it's not really worse than typical college textbooks. I don't buy that.

First, the good points: its introduction, scientific method coverage, population, community, and ecosystem ecology sections were very good. The scientific method coverage, in particular, took pains to define the scope of scientific discourse very precisely, and explicitly stated that other fields such as religion can also help us to know nature. I appreciated that.

The community and ecosystem sections, in particular, seemed well-written. They didn't just state ideas; they described the studies that supported them and actively encouraged critical thinking about those studies and their results. In my class, we read those sections first, so I had high hopes for the textbook as a whole.

The book covers a very broad set of topics, and some in surprisingly deep detail. It has a good index and glossary as well.

Unfortunately, most of the book follows this pattern:

Thing A performs function X. Thing B performs function Y. Thing C does Z. They fit together as A-B-C. See figure 8-23h.

(repeat over and over, with different values of ABC, XYZ.)

That is, very little explanation of why we believe this is the case, how we learned about it, how the scientific method was applied in the acquisition of this knowledge, or any disagreement among biologists as to the accuracy of the information. They did have very occasional sections on this, but entire chapters might be almost completely devoid of it. Almost never does the book cite its sources for facts either.

As I was reading the chapters on cells -- which have amazingly intricate chemical properties spelled out -- I kept wondering: when and how did we manage to figure THIS out? It was almost never explained. It would have been so fascinating if it had been.

Then there is the tendency to put out rather unsupportable statements, such as this little gem from page 595:

"Composed of up to 100 billion intricately organized neurons, with a much larger number of supporting cells, the human brain is more powerful than the most sophisticated computer." OK, thought-provoking, yes. But how can you scientifically evaluate the power of a computer and a brain on objective terms? I'm not sure I can evaluate the power of a computer on objective terms (the word "power" is just way too imprecise), let alone that of a brain. They cite no source of that, there is no discussion or background of it. It's just thrown out there, then discarded. I hate that. If you're going to say something that interesting, at least make a feeble attempt to back it up!

They also have a habit of saying things are "almost always" true, such as on p. 383, where they say "Solar energy powers nearly all ecosystems." But they rarely explain what the exceptions are, leaving you to wonder whether a given example is an exception or a rule. (OK, so it's more obvious here, but it happens elsewhere).

They do have a number of helpful figures in the book, though they've probably gone overboard on the photos of athletes and things. Yes, muscles make us run. I get it already.

This is an introductory textbook, so perhaps I am overly harsh here. But I've read other introductory textbooks that are more given to precise language, and don't have chapters that are just endless lists of definitions and functions, but explain how we got there. This book could have so easily been excellent.

About the Author
Robert Cornuke is an international adventurer and explorer who has appeared on the CBS television special Ancient Secrets of the Bible, NBC Dateline, NBC Evening News, and The 700 Club. Articles about him have appeared in Newsweek, People, The New York Times, Parade, The Washington Press, and Vanity Fair. He has also appeared on national radio shows with Wayne Lapiero, G. Gordon Liddy, and Dick Staub. A former police investigator and Swat team member, Bob is founder and president of Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration Institute (BASE) and lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Fascinating!

This book is not only interesting from a factual point of view, but the author also does an excellent job recounting his adventures in an entertaining manner. (I disagree with the reviewers on the bottom that said this book was tedious reading.) The pictures in the middle are fascinating as well as the text which is very convincing. He goes into detail about what he has found and brings the Scriptures to life. I am looking forward to re-reading Exodus as now it seems more real. The discoveries the author made are compelling evidence that this may well be the real Mt. Sinai

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field—including those of former students, now in health careers—that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings InterActive Physiology¨ CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). Anatomy & Physiology, Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Lacking enough detail in spots

I feel like this was a much bigger A&P textbook that was cut down into an "Essentials" version. Every now and then you'll be faced with a term in passing as if you already understand it, when it hasn't been presented at all. It's almost like a paragraph is missing every few pages. This feeling gets worse when you try to use the online or CD quizzes which will ask questions you can not possibly answer with this text book. If you're taking a very generic class where the teach doesn't expect you to know more than the bare basics (and is willing to let you skip the parts not adequately explained in this book!) then it's passable. Otherwise, you might need an additional text to muddle through.

New editions are overrated.

I got this book for my anat/physio class, and it worked just fine. Using older editions of textbooks is a great way to stick it to the man! (because you're not supporting their awful practices; instead you're supporting college students that don't need them anymore.)
This book even had the CD inside it because the seller didn't need it. I saved at least $80 buying this edition instead of the 10th edition. Great details and everything, same basic structure as my classmates new edition.

this book is marvelously written, great story line, Chip Hilton is a great character and a role model, he is kind and giving and he doesn't let be a sports hero and fantastic go to his head. Great book for any sports fan. Definatly worth the money.

About the Author

Mark Allen Weiss is a Professor in the School of Computer Science at Florida International University. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University where he studied under Robert Sedgewick. Dr.Weiss has received FIU's Excellence in Research Award, as well as the Teaching Incentive Program Award, which was established by the Florida Legislature to recognize teaching excellence. Mark Allen Weiss is on the Advanced Placement Computer Science Development Committee. He is the successful author of Algorithms, Data Structures, and Problem Solving with C++ and the series Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis in Pascal, Ada, C, and C++, with Addison-Wesley.

wow, the full power of Java

Hi, before I go any further, let me mention that I bought a slightly older edition - my edition has 542 pages - so it seems that the author is still working on the book. But the book shouldn't have changed much.
This is an advance book on Data Structures - the author waste no time with the basics (unlike lots of other data structure books that spends like 50 pages going over basic language elements like arrays)
Let me stress the fact that this is an advance book, containing material that's NOT typical of a second quarter data structure class. Topics like d-Heaps, Binomial Heaps, NP-Completeness, Deterministic Skip Lists, and get this JAVA 1.2 COLLECTION API! - These things are definitely not for beginners. DO NOT read this book until you understand basic data structures from some other book. Perhaps: "Data Structures & Algorithms in Java (Mitchell Waite Signature Series)"??
That's why in the title of this review, I said that the book unleashes the full power of Java. If we just stick to simple binary trees or the usual heaps, C++ is just as good as Java. Java can only really beat C++ when it's used for complicated object systems. So by spending about half of time on advance data structures, AND PROVIDING SO MUCH SOURCE CODE, this book reveals the full power of Java.
So that's the good part (well for some people) - this book really puts Java to work. Here's the bad part, the author is really smart but goes really fast. I never learned anything advanced in my first pass. If it's something new for me, I always have to reread a passage at least twice, and VERY SLOWLY too, to grasp the material. Well, hard things never come easily. Mr. Weiss (author), if you are reading this, more pictures would be nice.
Another thing that annoys me is the cost. Well, it seems all data structure books are expensive except for the "Data Structures & Algorithms in Java (Mitchell Waite Signature Series)" book. That's definitely the book to buy for most people.
Get the "Data Structures & Algorithms in Java (Mitchell Waite Signature Series)" book first. Then get this book if you want to learn more (OR JUST TO SEE THE SOURCE CODE AND CHEAT - that's why I bought the book. Well, that's cause I am too dumb/lazy to get the AVL trees to work. So I get the book and cheat!) One last time, the book is hard to understand (or is it just that the material is hard? or is it just me?).

Excellent, but quite advanced

As at least one previous reviewer has stressed, this is _not_ a book for beginners. It is also not necessarily a book for users who simply want access to algorithm code (although the code is excellent, easy to read, and fully Java-aware). However, for the advanced user, it does an excellent job of living up to its title, particularly in its analysis of various algorithms (as opposed to simply describing those algorithms and printing the code for them). It crams a lot of thought into 542 pages, but be prepared to take it all in slowly. This is no "Algorithms for Dummies" book, but it is the best book I have seen for algorithm development in Java, and one of the best I've seen that discusses algorithms in general.

I give this book only 2 stars. This book is not for students taking their first course in data structures. However, I first encountered it as a required text for an introductory Data Structures course that I took. This book is not an easy nor an enjoyable read. It does not contain nearly enough visual aides i.e., graphics, screen shots, diagrams to help a reader develop a mental image of abstract data structures. It is far too technical to be used as an introductory text to Data Structures. It is a colorless, lifeless presentation of a subject that actually can be quite fun and interesting. How can a book on Data Structure be fun or interesting...Please see my review of "Data Structures And Algorithms in Java" by Robert LaFore. Mr. Lafore's book is OUTSTANDING! It has great graphics, simple explanations, a great Table of Contents, and Index. I bought it and it was instrumental in my getting a "A" in the course. I recommend you buy it instead of Mr. Weiss's product.
