How much time do you need to change the direction of your life?

I read Jon Acuff's book Quitter in the spring. It was an interesting book that had many pointers that I could use. Maybe people referred to Dan Miller's book as having more substantial and sequential instructions on how to accomplish your goals. So I got his book next. First lets be clear. This book is not a magic wand or lottery ticket. Its not going to automatically give you what you want. What the book does accomplish is to help you realize why you aren't happy with your job and how to determine your innate potential.

Miller destroys the myth that work sucks, everybody hates their job and everyone is looking forward to retirement. That was the way I was raised. It was the way my parents were raised, my grandparents, we can go on and on. Reading the book helped me understand my feelings better. Then it went beyond that. He does give you guidance on how to go about doing what you love.

I have to disagree with the gentleman who gave the book a 1 star because he "couldn't quit his 6 figure job because...." and Dan Miller doesn't give him a solution. Its not really his job to help you figure out how to make as much money and pay off your debt. Its really his job to help you realize what you really want to do and how to go about getting that job. He gives a great example of the ER doctor who wanted to drive trucks. I'm betting he had as much debt and made as much money as the attorney. The ER doctor doesn't quit his job completely and throw away all of his schooling, he worked part time on the weekends in the ER, when he wanted to and spent his week days happily driving a truck.

It really comes down to what do you want to accomplish and what are the steps necessary to do that and this book meets that criteria. So you can spend the rest of your life talking about what you can't do or you can change course and realize what you want to do.

I'm not sure after reading this whether I know what I want to be when I grow up but my job search is reinvigorated and I want to do more to explore my mission on earth. The author definitely inspires positive thinking and a more creative approach to work.

OK, but repeats tried-and-true books

Well, maybe it's because I've read so many other books of this type ... but there's a lot of same ol', here. Interesting, though.

If you -- like us -- are an aficionado of the tried-and-true "What Color is Your Parachute?," there isn't much new, here. One glaring 'error' I see is something a lot of people assume, but is simply not the case (at least nowhere in the real world we and our friends inhabit): if you are an out-of-work professional, you are NOT going to get a job by talking to a manager at a burger joint or with the receptionist (who will not magically summon the hiring manager you need) at company ABC.

The excuse at the burger joint is: "The minute something in your career comes up, you'll be gone." You mean, as opposed to the person who gets enough for a couple of car payments and leaves? What's the difference?

The response at a company's front desk (or, increasingly, at job fairs)? "Apply online for a specific job." Sort of tough to get the insider view, that way. Even when my husband was trying to get OUT of a career, he couldn't find a job in another industry where he was highly qualified. You can't convince the hiring managers you're serious.

Now: having said all that: if this is your first foray into this type of book, go for it. But if you've been at this for years, maybe not so much, or grab the Kindle version and use the TOC to find chapters which will interest you.

About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate study and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956, and has also spent two years as a visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Hugh's career has centered entirely around undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky's "College Physics," he is currently a coauthor with Roger Freedman on Sears and Zemanksy's "University Physics,"

Hugh is an enthusiastic skier, climber, and hiker. He also served for several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh, and has played numerous organ recitals in the Pittsburgh area. Prof. Young and his wife Alice usually travel extensively in the summer, especially in Europe and in the desert canyon country of southern Utah.

Robert M. Geller teaches physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also obtained his Ph.D. under Robert Antonucci in observational cosmology. Currently, he is involved in two major research projects: a search for cosmological halos predicted by the Big Bang, and a search for the flares that are predicted to occur when a supermassive black hole consumes a star.

Rob also has a strong focus on undergraduate education. In 2003, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. He trains the graduate student teaching assistants onmethods of physics education. He is also a frequent faculty leader for the UCSB Physics Circus, in which student volunteers perform exciting and thought-provoking physics demonstrations to elementary schools.

Rob loves the outdoors. He and his wife Susanne enjoy backpacking along rivers and fly fishing, usually with rods she has build and flies she has tied. Their daughter Zoe loves fishing too, but her fish tend to be plastic, and float in the bathtub.

Not at All like Sears and Zemansky wrote it the first time

I had a Sears, Zemansky, and Young version before. I'm not thrilled with the new layout by the new editor. I think they are playing on the Sears and Zemansky name to see them, but that is not Amazon's fault. It is not at all like the Sears and Zemansky version (the one my Dad had in school in the 50's) or the version that I had in the late seventies.

About the Author
Gerald L. Borchert (senior professor at Carson Newman and thesis director at the Institute for Worship Studies) was a Canadian lawyer who holds a Princeton PhD in New Testament and did post-doctoral work in Jerusalem, Cambridge, Hamburg, Duke, and Boston. He has taught in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe and been dean of two American seminaries. A translator for the New Living Translation, he has penned 150 articles and a score of books including commentaries on John, Galatians, Revelation, and Thessalonians and Worship in the New Testament.

This is an excellent commentary on John. It is a shame that it is on the first 11 chapters. Dr. Borchert takes a look at the book of John and realizes that John has created more than a documentary of Jesus' life.

Best Commentary for Pastoral Study

I studied under Drs. Borchert and G. R. Beasley-Murray and R. Alan Culpepper--all excellent Johannine scholars. I have found this commentary and its concluding second volume to be the best for preparation of sermons and bible studies to my congregation.
Dr. Borchert is acquanted with all issues of critical scholarship, yet has a positive and spiritual exegesis of the text.

A fair introduction

I studied Braswell's book in a class on Islam and found it to be general and easy to read. Because of its general nature, further reading needs to be pursued for more in-depth understanding of Islam. Also, the complex nature of any culture, religion or ideology needs to be seen from many viewpoints. The back cover of the book says the book provides a "complete introduction" to Islam.

In response to the comment here in this review section, I don't think it is fair to say that Braswell was hiding his Protestant Christian background, as this can be seen in several places in the text. In the Preface he says, "I do not write as an insider but as one informed by western civilization and experienced in the Protestant Christian tradition. Yet I write as one who strives for objectivity." He also states that many of his sources were Muslims and Islamic scholars.

Furthermore, this book is published by Broadman & Holman, who specialize in "inspirational" literature and Bibles. If you scan the table of contents you will find that one of the themes of the book is to compare the ideology of Islam with that of Christianity. However, I feel he does this with objectivity and sensitivity. Braswell followed one of the basic rules of writing to craft this book - write to a specific audience.

It is my opinion that he gives a good overview of a very old, and complex culture/religion and for those interested, a good yet basic comparison between two world religions. There are several really good books produced by Muslims that do the same thing. I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the study of Islam, especially for those who want the basic comparison of Islam and Christianity.

Long on fairness

George Braswell's, Islam, is the most balanced treatments on Islam that I've ever read. The author uses his personal experiences and travels to reveal a fair impression of Islam and its people.

Much of the book contains historically calculated issues within Islam to deliver relative information to the religion. When reading this book along side one written by a Muslim, there was little doubt that Braswell was offering unbiased information where the other book on Islam was playing fast and loose with historically documented realities.

I cannot help but recommend this book to the individual wanting more than opinion and less than sensationalism as they pursue an unbiased and historically accurate treatise on the worlds fasted growing religion.

Great Book on Islam and Christianity. Fair and comprehensive

Not to many Chritians write books about Islam that are fair or flattering. That is not the case with George Braswell. His book not only gives the key historical and theological insights on Islam, but presents a short explanation that compares certain Islamic teaching with Christianity. He is neither degrading or accusatory against Islam. And that's why I like about this book. Finally, a Christian book on Islam from someone with a level head!

A Conversation Worth Reading

It seems that "theological novels" are becoming increasingly popular. Of course English literature began with a theological novel in the form of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. In more recent years we have seen a series by Richard Belcher that has been quite popular in Reformed circles and Brian McLaren's somewhat notorious series, popular in Emerging Church circles, that began with A New Kind of Christian. A recent addition to this list is Common Grounds written by Glenn Lucke and Ben Young.

Ben Young is a Southern Baptist who is associate pastor of worship at the inconceivably huge Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. Glenn Lucke is a graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary and leads Docent Communications Group. Their relationship and a common concern about the lack of theological understanding in the young people they interacted with, led them to write a book presenting the basics of the faith. As they began to write the book evolved into its current narrative format.

Common Grounds is the story of three friends who are all at different places in life. Brad is a nominally Baptist investment banker; Lauren is an unbelieving former Catholic corporate attorney; Jarrod is a Charismatic graduate student in philosophy. These three friends gather each Sunday evening to talk and share their lives with each other. One day Brad meets a new friend, a semi-retired professor of theology. He invites this man to join their group and the professor begins to mentor them in the faith, presenting to them the foundations of Christian doctrine. These weekly conversations address critical doctrines such as sin, evil, revelation (both natural and special), sovereignty, and more.

This book is notable for at least two reasons. First, the doctrine presented is Scripturally-sound and consistent with Reformed theology. Second, the authors present a way of evangelizing people that is geared to a postmodern generation. They employ the twin concepts of narrative and story to present sound doctrine in a way that will appear to postmoderns more than the traditional abstract propositions one might find in a classic book like Evidence that Demands a Verdict. Today's generation is less-likely to be persuaded by a cold, rationalist presentation of the facts, and more likely to be persuaded by the presentation of a person's own testimony or story. My only concern with the book was that there was no clear presentation of the gospel. This postmodern method of evangelism can be effective, but only if it includes the gospel! My concern was alleviated, though, when Glenn Lucke sent me the following in an email. "The 3 key missing words on the last page are 'To Be Continued.' Book 2 is largely done but needs revision as MacGregor continues to teach Brad and Jarrod more deeply about the Christian faith and to explain it to skeptic Lauren." Common Grounds is only the first chapter of the story. I look forward to reading the continuation of this fascinating dialogue. I echo Al Mohler's endorsement where he writes, "If you want to reach the postmodern generation, read this book and give it to your friends."

Stories We Live By

Common Grounds is a soulful tale full of humor, wit, and doctrinal conversation which delves deep into the heart of the matter: the soul. Glenn Lucke has chosen, along with the help of his character, Dr. MacGregor, to address many controversial doctrinal issues with both witty and intelligent conversation in a manner which deals on the surface with the doctrine itself, but more importantly with the very essence of our being. Lucke's compassion for the heart of the matter is very eloquently written in a style that appeals not only to those who love to deal in doctrine, but also to those who are just looking for a good book to read. Brad, Jarrod and Lauren's tales are stories that all of us live by and can definitely identify with.
My favorite character is Lauren. I like the fact that Mr. Lucke does not just turn her into another number on someone's convert list. Her struggle is similar to one's struggle in their walk of faith except on a different plane of course because she is not a Christian.
Also, one of my favorite pictures that the author paints is the one in the chapter "Stories that we live by" in which he describes the effectiveness of our stories versus another's stories all wrapped up in our very own selfish intolerance of one another.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book as I would enjoy any which a good friend would recommend. In my opinion, a good book leaves a person searching one's soul for the very heart of the matter: Truth. That is exactly what this one did. I highly recommend it.

Accepting the Challenge

Common Grounds is a refreshing look at the realities of discussing truth in a world of relativism. Mr. Lucke and Mr. Young portray well the complexities of discerning the Truth while also reckoning with our worldviews. While affirming the veracity of Scripture, they challenge readers to peel back the layers of preconceptions and assumptions under which we all operate. The conversations between the main characters model what an honest engagement of intellect, spirit and emotions looks like-sometimes messy, often startling, never dull. The injection of doctrine in the book is far from dry. Instead, it highlights the constant interplay between "real" life and "spiritual" life, eventually making clear the transparency between the two. I recommend this book to anyone who has questions about what they believe, and even more to those who already think they have it all down. Initially this book will leave you wishing you could read more about the stories of Brad, Jarrod and Lauren, but ultimately it will inspire you to seek out "conversations about the things that matter most" with your own friends.

Great stuff, but WAY overpriced

I teach a university-level senior seminar course in biology, and I was strongly considering using this interesting little book, but it has it's downside. First though, the plusses...

The book is well-written, and the author covers interesting and timely topics including:

- an introduction to the practice of science

- what and how one goes about doing research

- what is means to be part of the community of science

- scientific ethics

...and other topics.

It is also short enough to be easily digestible while covering an interesting range of topics.

Now for the minuses (well, one BIG minus). When I had nearly decided to adopt this book for my course I checked the per copy price and found a $43 price tag!!! I was expecting something in the $10-20 range. Sticker shock was more than enough to put me off, and I will not require my students to pay that much for this short book.

The book is only 186pp, it's paperbound, and is only about 1/4" thick.

I hope that the author and his publisher will take note of this feedback. They would have made an institutional sale if they hadn't set the price so high.

I give the book 5 stars for content, presentation, and applicability, but loss of a star (and a sale) for the excessive price tag on this book.

Very Good Read - Get the Wheels Turning in Your Head

This is a great book for those pursuing scientific study, but it is also a great piece of writing on critical thinking - something which is largely lacking in today's society. Lee's writing is easy to follow and understand, and he makes very sound arguments without them coming off as attacks (e.g. in the pseudoscience chapter). Topics include philosophy of science, scientific misconduct, critical thinking, pseudoscience, research, and the scientific method. This book was the course "text" for the honours thesis course at my undergraduate university. I never read it then, but I'm glad I did now as I pursue a graduate degree.

Good and Helpful!

This book by Dr. Lee is very well written, and is easy to understand. I have not read all of it, but a near majority of it. This book makes several different aspects of science interesting. I have him as a professor, and he is a really good educator. Maybe he will read this and give me an A. But if he doesnt, thats fine too...Ill work on the A myself. But honestly, this is a very well written book. It is very interesting and helpful to grasp some deep scientific knowledge.

Excellent approach to practical dogmatics.The book wa written before conservatives high jacked the southern baptist convention and stifled free expression. Stagg was a master teacher of Greek making it accessible to laypeople.

About the Author
Neil A. Campbell has taught general biology for 30 years, and with Dr. Reece, has coauthored Biology, Sixth Edition, the most widely used text for biology majors. His enthusiasm for sharing the fun of science with students stems from his own undergraduate experience. He began at Long Beach State College as a history major, but switched to zoology after general education requirements "forced" him to take a science course. Following a B.S. from Long Beach, he earned an M.A. in Zoology from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside.He has published numerous articles on how certain desert plants thrive in salty soil and how sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His diverse teaching experiences include courses for non-biology majors at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College, where he received the first Outstanding Professor Award in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at UC Riverside, which recognized him as the university's Distinguished Alumnus for 2001. In addition to Biology, Sixth Edition, he is coauthor of Essential Biology.Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a post-doctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). Depth and Accuracy

Campbell and Reece are best known as the authors of the hefty and excellent "Biology", now in it's 6th edition used by undegraduate biology majors and AP Biology students.
"Essential Biology" uses a different approach. The authors have packed a great deal into this amazingly small textbook. I recently reviewed a huge number of introductory biology texts for adoption in our school district. We use Campbell and Reece's Biology, 6th edition for our AP biology course but were looking for a textbook to use with our 9th grade honors biology students.
After a lengthy comparison of textbooks we picked "Essential Biology" based on several things. First we found the book to be accurate, readable, and concise. We felt that it would give the students a depth of understanding in the core biological principles so that they would be ready when they moved on to AP biology later in their high school career.
Instead of trying to "cover" everything under the biological sun, "Essential Biology" focuses on four core biological topics: cells, genetics, evolution, and ecology. It's 20 chapters are broken up into these 4 units and does a wonderful job of pulling it all together.
Other textbooks certainly cover more material but with less depth. What is the use of having a huge textbook that the students either never finish or rush through with no real understanding? This is a textbook that the students can dig into and throughly understand during one course.
It is supported by CD-ROM's and on-line material. The website provides activities, on-line labs, quizes, and other practice. Students can print out results or e-mail them to their teachers.
I would recommend this text as one for use in a non-majors biology course or as an advanced high school biology introductory course.

It was definitely a difficult class to labor through, but this textbook did help a bit. Filled with charts, brevity, and specifics, I was able to understand the concepts well, despite not having much experience with biology.

Not bad, and since this textbook is out of edition now, it's a cheap alternative if you want to just brush up or is just curious about biogloy.

A superior survey text of human anatomy and physiology.

Marieb's latest edition provides the beginning anatomy student with a readable and informative text. The reading level is best suited to undergraduate students, and the photographs and diagrams stimulate student interest and understanding. Especially useful are the sections on "Developmental Aspects" of anatomy, which includes morphological and physiological changes from embryonic to geriatric stages. While this edition includes updated information since the 1997 edition, some professors and students may prefer the 5th edition (1997) because it is in hardback; the 6th edition is available only in paperback as of this review. Either edition is superior to other texts aimed at similar audiences on the basis of its clarity, readability, and organization.

Just completed an A&P class using this book as the text...

...and I've got to say, this book is heavy going.
It was certainly my perception -- and seemed to be consensus among many of the students -- that this textbook is mediocre. Several of us in the class were also taking medical terminology in another class; about midway through the class we discovered that each of us had separately taken to using our medical terminology text ("Language of Medicine," Chabner) as our primary text for the A&P class also, because we all found it much more user-friendly and felt we were absorbing a lot more information than we were with this book. (And this subset of the class appeared to be doing considerably better on exams than the rest of the class as a whole.)
If this is the designated text for a class you're taking, you don't have a whole lot of choice (but you might consider buying the Chabner book too, to lower your stress level!); but if you DO have a choice, I wouldn't recommend this book.

Good intro book

The Marieb textbook is a pretty good introduction to anatomy textbook. Obviously everyone has their own tastes and I would emphasize some topics more and de-emphasize others. I would say this book is middle of the pack when it comes to illustrations, review questions, and definitions. The labs that accompany this book are not very good.
