Some good ideas, though the style might put you off

Overall, a good book, but it reads too much like it was spoken from the pulpit as a typical Baptist sermon. The heart is right behind it, I have no doubts, and the ideas were good, but I'm not sure if I come away but a better understanding of what "the sound of God's applause" is...though the idea below helped. This is not a self-help book for those looking for ways to stop looking for the affirmation of others before looking for the affirmation of God, though it will be helpful in that search.

One of the best ideas from this book is a quote from D. A. Carson: "To be `blessed' means, fundamentally, to be approved, to find approval . . . Since this is God's universe there can be no higher `blessing' than to be approved by God. We must ask ourselves whose blessing we diligently seek. If God's blessing means more to us than the approval of loved ones no matter how cherished, or of colleagues no matter how influential, then the beatitudes will speak to us very personally and deeply." What a great idea! This makes my reading of the Beatitudes deeper.

At the end of the chapter on the Results of Pleasing the Father, I feel that Hughes defines our function here on earth a little too narrowly. Based on Rick Warren's comments that there are only two things that we can do here on earth that we can't do in heaven: sin and evangelize; Hughes goes from there to just make the generic statement that "while we are on earth, our purpose is to glorify our heavenly Father" (149). In his explanation he's too generic for my tastes and doesn't leave enough room for other ways to glorify the father while still here on earth.

A timely book on the human need for approval

The Sound of God's Applause deals with one of the most basic of human needs: approval. Through insightful examples and biblical analysis, Dr. Hughes examines our need for approval and leads the reader to search for approval from God rather than others. The writing style makes it seem like a conversation between the author and the reader. You will find yourself underlining passages and perhaps wanting to shout out, as a lady in one of the anecdotes does, "Fix it, Preacher." When you finish the book, you may feel that the author has helped you to fix it. Highly recommended.

A crucial, readable opus concerning divine approval.

Rarely does an author's first book strike so near to the heart of an issue. Dr. Hughes invites the reader, by means of the printed page, to share a casual conversation over a cup of coffee about the subject of approval. Through relevant examples, and with careful attention to the biblical witness, the author suggests that a life truly worth living is one lived seeking God's approbation, not that of other humans.Get this book, read it, underline it, re-read it, and then send a copy to a friend whose life has become mere existence.

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell combined the investigative nature of a research scientist with the soul of an experienced and caring teacher. He earned his M.A. in Zoology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. Dr. Campbell published numerous research articles on how certain desert plants thrive in salty soil and how sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His 30 years of teaching in diverse environments included general biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College, where he received the college's first Outstanding Professor Award in 1986. Most recently Dr. Campbell was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to his authorship of this book, he coauthored BIOLOGY and Essential Biology with Jane Reece. Each year, over 600,000 students worldwide use Campbell/Reece biology textbooks.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a post-doctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). As an editor at Benjamin Cummings, Dr. Reece played major roles in a number of successful textbooks. In addition to being a coauthor with Neil Campbell on BIOLOGY and Essential Biology, she coauthored The World of the Cell, Third Edition, with W.M. Becker and M.F. Poenie.

Martha R. Taylor has been teaching biology for more than 20 years. She earned her B.A. in Biology from Gettysburg College and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Science Education from Cornell University. She was Assistant Director of the Office of Instructional Support at Cornell for seven years. She has taught introductory biology for both majors and non-majors at Cornell University for many years and is currently a visiting lecturer in Cornell's introductory biology laboratory course. Based on her experiences working with students from high school and community college through university, in both classrooms and tutorials, Dr. Taylor is committed to helping students create their own knowledge of and appreciation for biology. She has been the author of the Student Study Guide for all six editions of BIOLOGY by Drs. Campbell and Reece.

Eric J. Simon is an Assistant Professor of Biology at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to both biology majors and no-biology majors, as well as upper-level biology courses in genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in Biology and Computer Science and an M.A. in Biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Harvard University. Currently, he is working toward an M.S.Ed. in Educational Psychology. Dr. Simon's diverse classroom experience includes teaching both biology majors and non-biology majors at numerous institutions, including St. John's University (Minnesota), Minneapolis Community and Technical College–where he earned an Outstanding Teacher Award–and Fordham College at Lincoln Center in New York City. Dr. Simon's research focuses on innovative ways for using technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly among non-biology major students.

WARNING! No access code in rental.

WARNING!!! Rental does NOT include access code even though the product is titled “Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections Plus MasteringBiology with eText -- Access Card Package (8th Edition).” After you click the 'rent' option, you will see a warning in fine print at the bottom of the rental selection box stating that access codes are not guaranteed. If you miss this tiny warning and proceed with renting, you will most likely receive a used book without a working access code unless you happen to receive a new book for your rental. If you receive a used book for your rental but need the access code, you will need to either keep the rental and buy an access code from Pearson or another source or return the rental and buy a new book with an access code. If you choose to return the rental, your money will be tied up until Rent U receives the returned textbook then refunds your rental fee. Either way, you will need to allow sufficient time to source and obtain your access code. Calling the rental product a textbook with access card package when there is no guarantee that the access card is included is deceptive and needs to be corrected.

About the Author

Dr. Eugene Merrill is distinguished professor of Old Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and distinguished professor of Old Testament interpretation at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. With degrees from Bob Jones University (Old Testament studies), New York University (Jewish studies), and Columbia University (Middle Eastern studies), Merrill is considered among the most outstanding Old Testament scholars in the United States today.

Strong on Unity Weak on Theology

I compared this commentary to Thompson (TOTC) and Craigie (NICOT). Merrill helps you see the rationale for the structure of Deuteronomy. He is much better at it than Craigie and especially better than Thompson. Merrill really helps you see the unity in Chapters 12-26, the section of the book that seems full of unrelated parts.

Merrill disappoints however in His lack of theological depth. There are places in Deuteronomy where the theology is as deep as a river, and Merrill will only wade to his ankles. Take for example Deuteronomy 8:3 "Man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Merrill's comments: God allowed "them to hunger and then to be fed by the miraculous supply of manna . . . an act so clearly supernatural that the poeple had to recongnize that it was all God and not of themselves. . . . There are relative values in life, and one of them is that spiritual food is more important than physical." Compare to Craigie's masterful comments:

"The severity of the wilderness period undermined the shallow bases of confidence of those who were not truly rooted and grounded in God. The wilderness makes or breaks a man; it provides strength . . . not the strength of self-sufficiency, but the strength that comes from a knowledge of the living God. When the people were hungry, God fed them manna . . . designed to teach the Israelites a fundamental principle of their existence. . . The basic source of life was God and the words of God to his people; every utterance of the mouth of the Lord was more basic to Israelite existence than was food."

Merrill waded, but Craigie plunged in. There are other places in which this weakness of Merrill's is evident. Compare Merrill with Thompson on 10:14-15. Merrill states the facts of the verse like a car maintenance manual. Thompson has marveled at the significance of God's self-existence and written a page of profound theological meditation (it's on page 148 of his commentary).

Merrill may have some places in his commentary where he is more theologically reflective, but from what I've seen so far, it is not his strength.

In short, Merrill can make sense of the structure of Deuteronomy, but Craigie and Thompson are invaluable for their depth of theological reflection. Own all three.

Deuteronomy Made Clear

The New American Commentary is the continuation of the tradition established by the older An American Commentary series under the editorship of Alvah Hovey at the end of the nineteenth century. The format makes the materials available to layman and scholar alike. The commentaries are based upon the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible. The individual commentators, however, have the freedom to develop their own translations of the original text where they differ from the NIV. Technical points of grammar and syntax are placed in the footnotes rather than in the text. Footnotes also provide the reader with a wealth of significant bibliographic references to a wide range of resources. Students and professors alike will find these paths to further research extremely helpful and rewarding.
Eugene Merrill is professor of Old Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary. He provides a brief but helpful Introduction that holds to Mosaic authorship and an early date prior to 1400 B.C. At pertinent points in the commentary the author offers further explanation of the existence and/or lack of archaeological evidence supporting the conquest of Canaan. His summation of the theology of Deuteronomy provides readers with a clear understanding of the significance of covenant to the theocratic community of Israel.
According to Prof. Merrill, the primary purpose of Deuteronomy is "to call the people Israel to covenant renewal" (67). He often disagrees with the identification and interpretation of alleged anachronisms that critical commentators use to support either non-Mosaic authorship or extensive post-Mosaic editing. Throughout the commentary, interpretive problems are identified, discussed, and viable solutions offered. The following are examples of such problems: the ethical dilemma of Moses' message to Sihon in 2:27-29; God's apparent apportioning of heavenly bodies to heathen nations in 4:19 so that they might worship them; and, Moses's disqualification from entering the promised land in 32:48-52. One of the important distinctions for Deuteronomy is in the matter of the usage of the second person singular and plural in the Hebrew. Merrill clearly defines the exegetical significance of both usages.
Merrill's identification of the various sections of 12:1-25:16 with the appropriate commandment of the Ten Commandments provides a worthy alternative to the divisions proposed by Walter C. Kaiser in Toward Old Testament Ethics (Zondervan).

Upholds Mosaic authorship of Deuteronomy

This is a very good conservative commentary on Deuteronomy.

Merrill's introduction includes a spirited defense of the traditional 1447/1446 B.C. date for the Exodus and the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch. Some other noteworthy features include: (1) Development of the idea that the Decalogue provides the overall organizing principle for the arrangement of the detailed covenant stipulations of Deut. 12-26; (2) Detailed discussion of Deuteronomy as a "covenant renewal" document structured along the lines of Hittite suzerain-vassal treaties of the second millennium B.C.; (3) Footnotes on virtually every page point the reader to the scholarly literature on Deuteronomy up to 1994.

About the Author
Thomas Engel has taught chemistry for more than 20 years at the University of Washington, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry and Associate Chair for the Undergraduate Program. Professor Engel received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago. He then spent 11 years as a researcher in Germany and Switzerland, in which time he received the Dr. rer. nat. habil. degree from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1980, he left the IBM research laboratory in Zurich to become a faculty member at the University of Washington.
 
Professor Engel's research interests are in the area of surface chemistry, and he has published more than 80 articles and book chapters in this field. He has received the Surface Chemistry or Colloids Award from the American Chemical Society and a Senior Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which has allowed him to establish collaborations with researchers in Germany. He is currently working together with European manufacturers of catalytic converters to improve their performance for diesel engines.

Philip Reid has taught chemistry at the University of Washington since he joined the chemistry faculty in 1995. Professor Reid received his bachelor's degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1986, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992. He performed postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus before moving to Washington.
 
Professor Reid's research interests are in the areas of atmosphere chemistry, condensed-phase reaction dynamics, and nonlinear optical materials. He has published more than 70 articles in these fields. Professor Reid is the recipient of a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, is a Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation, and is a Sloan fellow.

Difficult Chemistry Made Even Harder

Let me begin by saying - I love chemistry. I love math. I'm a total nerd. But this book turned me off to both. Taking a year of physical chemistry is hard - but this book makes it even harder. This is the first year my professors have used this book, and I think it will be their last.

The key points aren't covered in detail. The math is overly complicated, and the problems don't hit the right points. I don't have a lot of P.Chem textbook knowledge, but there has to be something better out there.

I wouldn't recommend the text at all - but if you buy it, you ABSOLUTELY need the solutions manual.

About the Author

James B. Hartle was educated at Princeton University and the California Institute of Technology where he completed a Ph.D. in 1964. He is currently Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His scientific work is concerned with the application of Einstein's relativistic theory of gravitation (general relativity) to realistic astrophysical situations, especially cosmology.

Professor Hartle has made important contributions to the understanding of gravitational waves, relativistic stars, and black holes. He is currently interested in the earliest moments of the Big Bang where the subjects of quantum mechanics, quantum gravity, and cosmology overlap.

He has visited Cambridge often since 1971 and has collaborated closely with Stephen Hawking over many years, most notably on their famous "no boundary proposal" for the origin of the universe. Professor Hartle is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is a past director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara.

Amazingly interesting book

This is the best book for understanding gravity mathematically at the level of an advanced undergraduate. Though intended for the classroom (and based on a class at UCSB) there are many aspects of this book which make it nearly ideal for self-study:

* interesting side-bars, with some math

* thorough details in mathematical explanations

* never too much repetition of covered material

* moves from special cases (with applications) to more general cases, allowing the student to learn a little at a time (which is rare in books on general relativity)

The only downside is that it doesn't go quite as far into recent theories as you might like. This is fine for me as I, as a complete layman, would rather understand a bit of relativity well--something I missed in my undergraduate physics training.

The reader-friendliest indroduction to GR

Most books I read about GR assume that you are some kind of math genius who after a few pages where you are introduced to stuff such as "vectors as directional derivatives" etc; you are supposed to be able to master differential geometry, curved spacetime and all the mathematical equipment of GR.

James Hartle's book is nothing like that. The reader gets to the physics of GR with math he can actually understand (Newtonian and Lagrangian formalism of Mechanics is enough as a background)and equations he can derive easily for himself. It's amazing that just at the 9th chapter of the overall 24 chapters of the book you can see derived the easiest way the orbits of a particle outside a black hole!

In short, Hartle starts where the other books about GR end, that is with the physics. And he ends where the other books begin, that is with the difficult math. This is, in my opinion, what makes this book so interesting and where all his beaty and strength lies in.

Self studier reads a textbook on general relativity

I purchased "Gravity" as part of an effort to learn more about modern physics. I do not have the money or schedule to take courses at a university, so I have been purchasing books and reading them on my own time. I wanted something that would give a deep, rigorous understanding of the subject matter. So far, after a month and a half of regular reading, I have made through the first seven chapters.
So far, I am not dissapointed. "Gravity" begins from where I left off (years ago, taking the physics courses mandatory for chemistry majors in a bachelors program) and builds precept upon precept to take the reader into the world of general relativity. The book uses language that is clear, and examples that help to further explain the concepts being taught in the course. For those of us who are not "mathheads", the mathematics needed to understand the material beyond basic calculus and algebra is taught within the text. This book is helping me to gain a better understanding of this area of physics.
I do have one "bone to pick", however, with the organization of the text. Like most textbooks, this one, usefully, has problems at the ends of the chapters. I like to work on a sampling of problems to solidify what I have learned. The problems are well written, and force you to think about the subject matter. However, none of the problems have answers in the back of the book! I understand that in a graded course, there is the temptation for some students to simply look up the answers, and not do the work. However, many textbooks have answers to selected problems. If this book had this, it would still leave many problems for assigned work for those taking a course, but allow self or independent studiers like me the opportunity to work some problems and see if we are on the right track in understanding the material.

About the Author

Janet L. Hopson, M.S.

Janet L. Hopson has written or co-written nine books, including six textbooks on general biology for college and high school students.  She currently teaches science writing at San Francisco State University, and has also taught writing at two campuses of the University of California.  She holds B.A. and M.S. degrees from Southern Illinois University and the University of Missouri.  She has won awards for magazine writing, and her articles have appeared in Smithsonian, Psychology Today, Science Digest, Science News, Outside, and elsewhere. 

 

Rebecca J. Donatelle, Ph. D.

Dr. Rebecca (Becky) J. Donatelle is an Associate Professor of Health Promotion and Behavior in the Department of Public Health at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. She teaches courses in Health Behaviors, Infectious Diseases, Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, and Violence and Public Health, and has taught thousands of students in health-related fields over the years.  As a researcher and behavioral scientist with an emphasis on intervention science, much of her work has focused on women’s health and the health of elderly populations. Her research has been published in numerous journals, and she has been a guest speaker and presenter at professional conferences throughout the country.  Dr. Donatelle is also the author of the highly successful introductory health textbooks Access to Health and Health: The Basics, published by Benjamin Cummings. 

 

Tanya R. Littrell, Ph.D.

Dr. Tanya R. Littrell is a full-time faculty member in Fitness Technology and Physical Education at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon.  Dr. Littrell worked as a fitness director for many years before attending graduate school at Oregon State University, where she earned both a master's degree in Human Performance/Exercise Physiology and a doctoral degree in Exercise Science/Exercise Physiology.  Dr. Littrell has been teaching lifetime fitness classes for undergraduates since 1998.

Excellent Textbook

This book was excellent! So was the fitness journal that came with it. The book was brief yet very informative. I would say anyone who wants to get into shape or lose a little weight will find this book helpful. It is not just a textbook either. Anyone would find it helpful.

R. Stanton Norman serves as director for the Baptist Center for Theology and Ministry. He also occupies the McFarland Chair of Theology at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He resides in Mateland, Louisiana.

A Book for (Most) Southern Baptists

I've been a Southern Baptist for over ten years now, but I haven't really explored my denomination's history or distinctives until the last few years. I picked up this book a year or two ago because I thought it would deepen my understanding of what it means to be a Baptist. Overall, it did not disappoint. In the book, Norman lists and discusses eight historically Baptist tenants in detail. His statements are well documented and are almost always supported by Scripture. I've read several other books on the subject, and they all have their good points, but for the reader who is interested in a detailed introduction, this is a good place to start. To put it another way, this book is for the Baptist who wants to know more about their denomination than what a brochure at the church welcome center would provide.

Big point: Norman is a very "conservative" Baptist (Is there any other kind, you ask? Well, yes, there is.). I typically don't mind this since I lean to the right anyway. But for some, his language may seem a bit overbearing in certain places. He makes no excuse in his introduction that this book is for Baptists, and he believes that all Baptist churches should openly and visibly manifest these distinctives. You don't have to be a theologian to read this, but you may need to be at least somewhat familiar with some typically Protestant terms like inerrancy of the Bible, regenerate church membership, congregational polity, and believer's baptism. Might be a good resource for deacons, too.

Excellent presentation of Baptist Distinctives

The first 4 Chapters are worth the price of the book. Great presentation on the historical position of Baptists toward the Word of God, the priesthood of all believers, and the ordinances. The author is a little weak on understanding the autonomy of the local church (he comes from a strong SBC background) but overall it is a great book.

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell combined the investigative nature of a research scientist with the soul of an experienced and caring teacher. He earned his M.A. in Zoology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. Dr. Campbell published numerous research articles on how certain desert plants thrive in salty soil and how sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His 30 years of teaching in diverse environments included general biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College, where he received the college's first Outstanding Professor Award in 1986. Most recently Dr. Campbell was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to his authorship of this book, he coauthored Biology: Concepts & Connections and Essential Biology with Jane Reece. Each year, over 600,000 students worldwide use Campbell/Reece biology textbooks.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a post-doctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). As an editor at Benjamin Cummings, Dr. Reece played major roles in a number of successful textbooks. In addition to being a coauthor with Neil Campbell on BIOLOGY, Biology: Concepts & Connections, and Essential Biology, she coauthored The World of the Cell, Third Edition, with W.M. Becker and M.F. Poenie.

The standard by which biology majors' texts are gauged

Campbell's Biology has been the standard biology text for majors for many years. Though there are many good competitors, this is the one that consistently seems to rise to the top.

The breadth of coverage is good overall, with particular strengths in cell, molecular, and physiology sections of the text. It's the one we chose to use in our year-long intro to biology majors course.

Not everything is roses, however. For one thing, compared to other sections of the text the section on animal diversity is brief (perhaps unavoidably so)...after all, no book can be all things to all people. The section on ecology is also a bit light compared to other sections of the text. That's not surprising, since many intro courses these days don't touch much on ecology...more's the pitty.

The two biggest challenges associated with this book are it's mass, and massive price tag (not unique among textbooks today). I have a difficult time sitting in a reading chair and getting into a comfortable position with this block of paper on my lap or in my hands. It is, as mentioned in at least one other review, just too heavy. The other challenge is the cost. That's an issue with many textbooks today. They are just so expensive that you almost need to take out a loan just to get your books.

Is there a way to get this book in an e-version, so I could load it onto a notebook computer? At least that way the book would be in a computer that would probably weigh less...

There are pros and cons. The pros seem to outweigh the cons for the moment.

One concern I have for the future of this text is that Campbell, the senior author, passed away recently. We'll have to wait and see if subsequent editions are able to maintain the scope and quality of coverage that this and previous editions were able to manage.

5 stars for quality, minus one for weight and cost. 4 stars.

A PLUS for content; F MINUS for physical layout

This book gets top marks of writing and organization. This is a superb book to use if you want a general introduction to biology. One improvement in the 6th is the use of dictionary symbols in the glossary, so pronunciation is now unambiguous.
However, one wonders why such talented writers and teachers would allow such a poor physical package to carry their name. No bows here!
The book is approximately 1250 pages long. While the previous, 5th edition used small type - making it hard enough to read - the 6th edition now uses a lighter even harder to read type. The book is also quite heavy and awkward, and is best read at a table or desk. Its physical size is more suitable for an encyclopedia than a text.
Three other minor issues:
To find the pronunciation of new unfamiliar technical terms one must turn to the glossary in the back of the book, an awkward process with a book this size. Perhaps, in the next edition, the authors will consider providing pronunciation information where new terms are first presented as well as in the glosary.
The enclosed CD is a nice touch with enough variety to keep it interesting. However, some more care needs to be given to matching it appropriately to the book. For example, the activity for Heritable Information for Chapter One presents numerous chemical concepts not yet covered, and is clearly inappropriate at this point in the book.
While the form of the glossary is improved, some pronunciations (plantae, deoxyribonucleic, etc.) still do not appear to match those of standard dictionaries or rules for scientific pronunciation.
In summary, this is a superb book to learn from whether in or outside a class. Its major problems relate to its seriously flawed physical layout. It cries out to be split into two volumes, and for many of the gratuitous pictures to be pruned so room for more readable type is available.
The books content easily deserve five stars - the rating here. The layout, sadly, much much less.

Unless your professor requires that you use this edition (which they shouldn't), buy the 6th edition, which is cheaper. The only difference between the two is slight text changes and rearrangements of the chapters. It's not worth your money unless you are drawn to this edition (trust me, you're not). Oh, and the study guides aren't worth it if you actually go to class and read the text.
