This book has been anything but dry, wordy, or confusing. The Holy Spirit has used Adrian Rogers mightily and has shown me a great deal in this last chapter of the Bible. I pray for Dr. Rogers and the wonderful ministry God has entrusted him with. God bless you.

Adrian Rogers recently passed away, and with him, some of the finest teaching skills in Christendom.

His Revelation is one of the best books on the subject. His strength is talking to the reader--not at the reader.

If you want Revelation in-depth, you might seek out "Revelation for the Complete Idiot". If you want a scholarly work, read Mounce.

If you want a teenager-oriented (or brand new believer, or teacher) book on Revelation, there is nothing better than: "Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs!" by Jerry L. Parks.

But if you want a conversational-style commentary--one with wonderful alliteration (which Rogers was the best at!) look no further than this book. You will not be disappointed!

A Satisfying Unveiling, Indeed

The book lives up to its title. Dr. Rogers unveils for us a portrait of Jesus Christ in the book of Revelation which is so different from the Gospels, the Epistles or the Old Testament. We are familiar with Jesus Christ as he was presented in the Gospels as a meek and lowly Lamb which takes the sin of the world: and that is crucial. But to be content with that picture of Christ is to deny the Bible's whole teaching about the person of Jesus Christ. The book of Revelation as Dr. Rogers explains it lifts up Christ to the glory and majesty he truly deserves.
Once you read this book, you will disabuse yourself of the fear and trepidation about the Great Tribulation and instead, you will see and know Jesus Christ in a different light. Reading this book is like holding up a diamond to the light to see all of its beautiful facets. Read and study the Old Testament to see the richness of the promise of Christ as Messiah; read the Gospels to know Christ as Savior; read the Epistles to know Christ as Lord; but read this book to understand the Revelation of Christ as Judge and King.
This book is truly uplifting. The message of the book will fill you with hope and with expectation of meeting Jesus Christ when he comes in his glory! Hallelujah!

A great book for the layperson

This is a pleasant and easy read that will take little time and give big rewards. It completely changed my understanding and perspective on the way Jesus wants us to pray, thereby changing the way I pray. The Lord's Prayer as it is explained in this book helps us understand God's character, and this knowledge has brought me great peace and joy. I believe praying this way is opening up avenues for God to work in me and in the world through me.

Very readable. Excellent work

This is a tremendously readable book, and by far, the best analysis I have ever read on The Lord's Prayer. Surprisingly, this is one of the few written works on the subject that points out that the Lord's Prayer is plural in nature. Give "us" "our" daily bread... Forgive us... Lead us... A welcome relief from the "Name it, and Claim it" theology which has so perverted the cause of Christ. I generously yellow highlighted this book because Dr. Hemphill includes many memorable one sentence gems such as, "God's truths, however, are usually more of an investment than a handout - timeless wisdom that is able not only to comfort or correct us but also to be communicated though us to others." A great read, and well worth the money.

The best of its kind that I've found

Three years ago, in response to a Sunday School student's question about what the kids were supposed to do on Sunday mornings in the Summer after Sunday School went on vacation, I found myself starting a summer soccer program at a small, rural Episcopal church in the Northeast.

At the time, it seemed like a perfectly reasonable thing to do. We had kids with an interest in it, and we had a field behind the church that we could use. And it was better to have the kids (and their parents) present at church in the Summer than off doing their own things.

Only when I started planning the second summer did it occur to me that this was something that wasn't usual, especially in the Episcopal church. I started looking for books that might help me figure out how to do a better job of whatever it was that I was doing.

My first forays into what I came to realize was the literature of recreation and sports ministry came up with some pretty awful tracts -- for that is what they were. The gist of them seemed to be that the content of the sports or recreation program wasn't important; the only thing that was important, according to these books, was to harangue the kids about Jesus as long as they would hold still. They were so wrong-headed, so counter-productive, so punitive, that one wondered if they had been written by closet atheists who wanted to poison kids on Christianity so permanently that they would never want to enter a church again. They were genuinely that bad.

THEN I found this book.

It gave me a good, well thought out scriptural basis for recreation and sports ministry.

It traced the history of recreation and sports ministry in the English-speaking world and helped me understand why our little summer soccer program was unique (increasingly I am thinking that it is unique!)

It gave me some practical advice about a whole range of topics concerned with organizing, funding, and operating a recreation and sports ministry.

It had FOOTNOTES!!!! and it cited OTHER AUTHORS!!!!! Not one other source on the subject that I found had that much intellectual integrity; not a single one.

We're now in the midst of our third year of summer soccer at Trinity Church, Lime Rock. If you want to see what it looks like, [...] is the parish website; you can find the soccer program under the "Young people" tab.

Using advice from this book, the program's doubled in size from last summer. We get respect from the local youth soccer club, and from the proprietors of the summer soccer camps. The local paper has given us coverage for four consecutive weeks now. We see families in church regularly now that we saw on occasional Christmases and Easters in the past. We see adolescents who had moved on to other things in their lives back on the premises for soccer.

Importantly, this book has helped me to realize that what we are doing is exciting and novel and effective, but that it is by no means all we can do in the recreation and sports ministry area. Since reading the book I've had some thoughts about programs for adults and more programs for kids that we can do. And right across from our church is the auto racetrack, Lime Rock Park. Who knows what the possibilities are?

It is a really valuable book.

The Chemistry Student's Savior

This book has saved more of my students than you would ever believe. I don't teach chemistry but I advise students in Chem 1/2 and A/P 1/2. This book is perfect for getting them started or back on track. Strongly recommend at any price but especially when you can get it for just more than shipping. I usually buy 5 copies a year and share them with my students. Some return them and others share with friends. I don't care as long as they are being used... and the students are passing.

I have used this book as a workbook for a church bible study group. It is an excellent resource in learning and teaching how to apply important principles that lead to church growth.
John Mark Terry is an excellent writer and his style aids retention as well as reads smoothly and easily.
This book is highly recommended both for the seasoned veteran and the beginning minister as well.

A Big Departure From Historical Evangelism

This book was a big disappointment and not worth the read. The author places a heavy emphasis on using persuasion, influence and emotional manipulation as techniques to bring people to Christ. This book is a big departure from historical evangelism and such ideas would simply produce temporary professions of faith rather than true conversions.

For those who have done an in- depth Beth Moore Bible Study, this book is a compilation of her wonderful poems from her journal writings. Beth has a unique way of writing that reveals her tender heart toward the Lord and causes you to evaluate your own relationship with the Living Lord Jesus Christ. THINGS PONDERED FROM THE HEART OF A LESSER WOMAN would make a great gift for anyone who has sought the heart of God through a Beth Moore Study.

The author's candidness is encouraging...we all struggle!

With all of the self-help books and motivational seminars, it's easy to feel inadequate in this life. It's almost as if, when you're facing illness or sadness or failure, YOU are to blame, because someone out there has a solution you should have seized. The reality of it is, we are not in control, despite what our egos think! And sometimes, we will face these struggles...inevitably! The key is to be anchored to Someone greater than yourself! I found Beth Moore's book refreshing and so funny. She is candid about what we face in life...the disappointments, the trials, the joy, the wonder of it all. And she makes no apologies for relying on Jesus Christ as her only sustanance. I would recommend this book especially to moms, adoptive parents, brides-to-be, and grandmothers needing a good laugh! A quick and thoroughly enjoyable read...

I bought this book at a First Place Conference after having the blessing of hearing Beth speak and share some of the works from Things Pondered. Beth has the gift of putting into words what many Moms and women feel in their hearts, but may be unable to express with words. A great book to encourage intimacy with our Heavenly Father.

Divided into four parts: Genetics and Chemistry, Central Dogma, Regulation, and Methods. For college instructors, students, and anyone interested in molecular biology and genetics.

About the Author
James D. Watson was Director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory from 1968 to 1993 and is now its President. He spent his undergraduate years at the University of Chicago and received his Ph.D. in 1950 from Indiana University. Between 1950 and 1953, he did postdoctoral research in Copenhagen and Cambridge, England. While at Cambridge, he began the collaboration that resulted in the elucidation of the double-helical structure of DNA in 1953. (For this discovery, Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1962.) Later in1953, he went to the California Institute of Technology. He moved to Harvard in 1955, where he taught and did research on RNA synthesis and protein synthesis until 1976. He was the first Director of the National Center for Genome Research of the National Institutes of Health from 1989 to 1992. Dr. Watson was sole author of the first, second, and third editions of Molecular Biology of the Gene, and a co-author of the fourth edition. These were published in 1965, 1970, 1976, and 1987 respectively. Watson has also been involved in two other textbooks: he was one of the original authors of Molecular Biology of the Cell and is also an author of Recombinant DNA: a short course.Tania A. Baker is the Whitehead Professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She received a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Stanford University in 1988. Her graduate research was carried out in the laboratory of Professor Arthur Kornberg and focused on mechanisms of initiation of DNA replication. She did postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Kiyoshi Mizuuchi at the National Institutes of Health, studying the mechanism and regulation of DNA transposition. Her current research explores mechanisms and regulation of genetic recombination, enzyme-catalyzed protein unfolding, and ATP-dependent protein degradation. Professor Baker received the 2001 Eli Lilly Research Award from the American Society of Microbiology and the 2000 MIT School of Science Teaching Prize for Undergraduate Education. She is co-author (with Arthur Kornberg) of the book DNA Replication, Second Edition.Stephen P. Bell is a Professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Assistant Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He received B.A. degrees from the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cell Biology and the Integrated Sciences Program at Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. His graduate research was carried out in the laboratory of Robert Tjian and focused on eukaryotic transcription. He did postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Bruce Stillman at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, working on the initiation of eukaryotic DNA replication. His current research focuses on the mechanisms controlling the duplication of eukaryotic chromosomes. Professor Bell received the 2001 ASBMBÐSchering Plough Scientific Achievement Award, and the Everett Moore Baker Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at MIT in 1998. Alexander Gann is Editorial Director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, and a faculty member of the Watson School of Biological Sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He received his B.Sc in microbiology from University College London and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from The University of Edinburgh in 1989. His graduate research was carried out in the laboratory of Noreen Murray and focused on DNA recognition by restriction enzymes. Well written, broad, and deep

If you are interested in genetics, this is a great book. It's interesting and fun to read in measured doses, since it's also dense.

The only negative is the associated online content is expired. You can use you tube or a web search to find other animations instead.

This book is an awesome teaching guide but the real prize goes to the CD and animations. Where a subject might be a bit hazy in the text, the flash animations on the CD are clear and concise.

I am a clinician scientist and have always had difficulty in relating to pure basic science books. The Molecular Biology of the Gene changed my mind. Outstandingly written chapters with colorful illustrations take you through extremely complex subjects in a breeze. A masterpiece, highly recommended.

The most exciting commentary for 1,2 Samuel

This commentary is a beautiful and interesting verse by verse exposition of 1 and 2 Samuel. Bergen's insights into the text are greater by far than anyone else I have read. Furthermore, he links the text to other parts of the canon of scripture that express similar or contrasting ideas. As an example, I like how he pointed out in 1 Samuel chapter one that Hannah took her barrenness to the Lord in prayer in contrast to Abram and Sarai's machinations and manmade attempts to solve the problem of her barrenness (Genesis 16).

I have been preparing sermons for over ten years, and if I had only one book on these books, this would be the one.

Scholarly, Accessible, Exciting

This is an excellent commentary by the author of 'Biblical Hebrew and Discourse Linguistics.' This commentary demonstrates how the application of the discipline of linguistics can contribute to an understanding of the Old Testamtent. The commentary also excels in placing the contents of these Old Testament books within a Biblical Theology; it is sensitive to placing their contents within the context of an unfolding revelation. This commentary also proves that a scholarly commentary does not have to be difficult to read. While some commentaries are boring and dry as dust, this one is fun and exciting.

Very well done

This commentary is one of my favorites. The scholarship is excellent, treatment is even-handed, and the writing style is fluid and easy to digest. I suppose the account of Israel's first kings makes for a particularly interesting study to begin with, but Bergen leads the reader through the text well. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Timothy George has served as dean of Beeson Divinity School since its inception in 1988. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, George teaches Church History and Doctrine. He serves as senior theological advisor for Christianity Today and is on the editorial advisory boards of First Things, Harvard Theological Review, and Books & Culture. The New American Commentary "focuses on communicating the theological structure and content of each biblical book. The writers seek to illuminate both the historical meaning and contemporary significance of Holy Scripture." The series as a whole focuses on two concerns:
1) The commentary emphasizes how each section of a book fits together so that the reader becomes aware of the theological unity of each book and of Scripture as a whole.
2) The New American Commentary is produced with the conviction that the Bible primarily belongs to the church...the editors and authors of this series have attempted to communicate the findings of their research in a manner that will build up the whole body of Christ.

Focusing on the commitments listed above as well as the two concerns results in a commentary series that provides a trustworthy and sound exegetical and theological exposition of God's Word. It also provides a commentary series that is highly readable for many in the church as the authors express their concern to communicate clearly as to edify the whole body.

With these goals in mind I want to briefly comment on the New American Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians authored by Timothy George. This commentary, like most others, begins with an introduction section that covers the authorship, destination, date and place of origin, purpose etc. This is always helpful as it sets the reader's focus to the original framework of the book and not to our 21st century world. This introduction is right at 50 pages long and much detail is given to the specific nature of the problem at the church in Galatia. George introduces the reader to many different thoughts and theories regarding the difficulties expressed in Galatians. I enjoyed this section as it brought forth many ideas or theories that I had not read much about previously. George's commentary on Galatians is 450 pages long making it a pretty thorough treatment of the book. I was blessed many times in my reading, but I was very encouraged when reading his treatment of Galatians 5:22-6:1. In introducing the fruit of the Spirit George states that, "the listing of the sinful acts in the catalog of evil was disorderly, chaotic, and incomplete, corresponding to the random and compulsive character of sin itself. In stark contrast now, the character traits contained in the catalog of grace appear in beautiful harmony, balanced and symmetrical, corresponding to the purposeful design and equilibrium of a life filled with the Spirit and lived out in the beauty of holiness." It is easy to see the opposing nature of the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, but here George adds depth to the comparison by showing how much turmoil is in the "flesh" list as opposed to how much harmony is in the "Spirit" list. George then goes on to catalog these 9 fruit of the Spirit and define them in biblical, not worldly terms.

In his treatment of Galatians 6:1, George sounds a call for the church to return to its biblical mandate to exercise loving church discipline. He states, "it is a sign of the spiritual stupor that has befallen the body of Christ that church discipline is seldom if ever raised as a viable concern in evangelical churches today....[discipline] aimed at restoring the lapsed brother or sister to full fellowship if possible, and it marked off clearly the boundaries between the church and its environing culture. In both of these ways discipline helped preserve the purity of the church's witness in the world. The loss of this historic distinctive has resulted in the crisis of spirituality that pervades so much of our church life today." AMEN!!! The church would do well to heed George's call to return to this biblical mandate in a loving and gentle way as described in Galatians 6:1. I was tremendously blessed by this commentary and look forward to using it for years to come. I highly recommend it.

If you enjoy the commentary on Romans, you would really enjoy Galatians. The NIV being one of the more widely used versions has particular nuances. This commentary does an excellent job of showing the work of individual verses and the passages at a whole.
