Required Reading!
By A Customer
This provocative book addresses one of the most significant events in modern church history. Baptists, as Pressler suggests, are not the only group to be ripped asunder by the conflict between traditional Bible believers and modernists; but the clash has been especially painful among a group known heretofore as "the People of the Book." By whatever name they choose (modernists, liberals, moderates), they reflect the infiltration of materialism/naturalism into the church. The difference between them and tradional Bible believers is revealed when they approach a difficult passage of Scripture. The former immediately assume the Bible is in error and try to explain it away. Others of us recognize our finite minds must struggle to comprehend infinite Truth. We rely on the Holy Spirit who wrote the Book to interpret it to our hearts. As Pressler explains, this requires an open minded humility missing in some readers. The liberal's innate arrogance and scepticism produce what Pressler calls a "Dalmatian theology." They only believe the Bible in spots! Judge Pressler readily admits there have been mean spirits and a deplorable lack of love on both sides of the battle. Nonetheless, those of us who hold with saints through the ages that "all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for instruction in righteousness" owe a great debt to Judge Pressler and others like him. We and our children have been ridiculed and sometimes persecuted for our faith--even in our churches and Baptist schools (no, ESPECIALLY there!) Liberals call our RESTORATION to traditional Biblical principles a "takeover." But THEY pulled off the "takeover" in the 50's and 60's. Pressler correctly maintains they have the same vote they've always had--which happens to be a minority voice in our denomination. Judge Pressler's genius was to understand how a small, arrogant (sometimes ruthless) group held our denomination hostage through committees, through educational institutions, through editorial boards, and through the willful ignorance of many "sheep" in the pew. He is unappreciated by many who should bless his name, and hated by those whose chicanery he exposed. His book should be required reading for students (and professors) in Baptists universities and seminaries.

Must read for all Baptists: liberals and conservatives alike
By A Customer
After years of seeing liberals spin the conservative takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention to their liking, Paul Pressler's book is refreshing.
Pressler is to conservative Southern Baptists what Ronald Reagan is to Republicans. In "A Hill on Which to Die," Pressler gives documentation of rampant liberalism throughout the convention. Pressler did not, as some liberals would have us believe, "Burn down the barn to get rid of a few rats." Liberalism was prevalent, and a conservative takeover was the only way to reclaim the seminaries and colleges.
The book offers countless surprises: how Adrian Rogers did not want the nomination the night before the 1979 convention opened; how and why Pressler watched the 1979 convention from a skybox; how the "Donahue" show helped the conservative movement; how former president W.A. Criswell, himself a conservative, had failed to make changes when he was president; how Pressler tried to make changes before 1979, only to get the cold-shoulder.
Throughout the book, Pressler tells how the conservative movement was misunderstood and misrepresented. The battle was not over the interpretation of Scripture, but rather its integrity and inerrancy. And, surprisingly, it was not very organized. Conservatives did not use countless vans and buses to get messengers to conventions, as liberals charge. Rather, it was mostly a grass-roots effort which began with conservative churches wanting to change the liberal establishment. The conservatives were in the majority throughout the churches, but were not being represented in the presidency and on the committees.
And, as some may claim, it was not a hate-filled movement. The book is filled with examples of Pressler's Christian love for all believers - liberals, moderates and conservatives. However, throughout the battle, Pressler's beliefs and motives were mischaracterized and spun by the opposition, leading to the negative opinions about him that abound today. Occasionally, there were even flat-out lies. Finally, he gets to respond.
Liberals will not want to read this book, but they should.
This should be required reading for all Southern Baptists.

A USEFUL TOOL FOR PREACHERS IN BOTH LIFE AND PULPIT
By A Customer
It seems that many preachers enter their weekly duties withacademic credentials and a certificate of ordination, but littleknowledge of "how" to preach the Word. It is one thing to hear the charge of Scripture to "Preach the Word!" (2 T. 4:2)yet quite another to implement it in practice.
"Anointed Expository Preaching" points out that if we would be followers of Jesus, the Prince of preachers, then we must understand 1) the walk we are to pursue as men of God, 2) the work we are to perform in both preparation and sermon delivery, and 3) the breadth of the Word we are proclaiming. "Anointed Expository Preaching" offers every preacher a primer for his God-appointed task.
The four appendices alone at the close of the book are worth the price of the book as the critical subjects of worship, music, evangelism and the message of Romans as a model for the preacher are addressed.
"Whether a young man is just starting out in 'the work of ministry' or is seasoned with experience, he will find "Anointed Expository Preaching" a useful tool for both life and pulpit." -- Dr. Phil Newton South Woods Baptist Church Memphis TN

How to Become an Anointed Expository Preacher
By Todd Hudnall
Renowned expository preacher Dr. Stephen Olford, and his son, Dr. David Olford, have collaborated on a book made up of lectures and lessons from the "Stephen Olford Center for Biblical Preaching." Its purpose is "to equip and encourage pastors and lay leaders in expository preaching and exemplary living, to the end that the church will be revived and the world will be reached with the saving Word of Christ." Throughout the book the authors are clearly committed to biblical revelation, biblical exposition, and biblical proclamation.
"Anointed Expository Preaching" is divided into three sections. First, "The Walk to Pursue" concerns the preacher's life, emphasizing that God is more concerned with what we are than what we do. He investigates the preacher's relationship to God's Word, his need for the spirit-filled life, and the requirements of being a man of God. He also investigates the preacher's work in the context of the pastoral ministry. Second, "The Work to Perform" examines the method of preaching. Here you learn the "how to's" of expository preaching. I found this the most helpful and the strongest segment of the book. Clear instruction is given on the methodology of preparing an expository message from beginning to end. Third, "The Word to Proclaim" looks at the message that is to be proclaimed. Emphasis is placed on the preacher's need for God's anointing to carry out his calling. You will also learn how to apply the sermon to your audience, how to effectively present an invitation, and methods of conserving the evangelistic harvest.
The greatest value of the book is as an encyclopedia of information detailing the process of expository sermon composition and delivery. The authors' passion for the subject is clearly sensed and the organization of the text makes it a quality resource manual. Portions of the book read much like a sermon. Perusal of this work provides a lesson on effective alliteration. It does have somewhat of an "old time" feel to it, as if you are reading something written in another generation. The 396-page book includes an appendix and extensive endnotes. "Anointed Expository Preaching" is a valuable resource for anyone desiring to improve his understanding of expository preaching and skill as an expository preacher.

A Layman's Perspective
By Amazon Customer
Let me put a plug in from a layman's point of view: Great book!
Ok, now why would a layman even be interested in this book? Simple, with all the experiental preaching going on these days my search for: "what makes a good preacher?" and "how do you know what good preaching is?" has led me to this book.
I have known about expository preaching (and have been priveledged to have listened to preachers who actually preach consistantly from the Word) of course, but wanted to learn more. The Olford's book does a fabulous job. First and foremost they define the role of a preacher (the Call of God, The Word, living the life of a Godly man; being a man of God, and doing the work of God). Secondly they go into the preparation of the sermon (I have listened to many preachers that sound as if they prepared their sermon the night before, and I have had some even confess to me that that was precisely what they had done!). Lastly they explain delivery of the sermon (proclamation of the Word AND Salvation).
This book describes that preaching the Word should be an exciting experience (in the preparation, delivery and expectation of change in individuals by the Lord)! I especially like the author's emphasis on fearless preaching (i.e. speaking on how today's happenings compare to the Word). Definitely no P.C. preaching here!
It now holds a prominent spot on my bookshelf! Definitely worth the purchase price.

Fantastic volume!
By Tom Kloske
In a word, Outstanding! This book fills a void for the every-day Christian, meaning it's not written for the "scholar," but for the Sunday to Sunday pew-packing Christian. The "novice" will gain great insights from this volume, and the mature Christian will be allowed to go "deeper" into the text while learning a great deal.

Dr. Blomberg's layout for this book is just outstanding, giving enough "historical background" to be interesting, but not overwhelming. In addition to the "historical background," the structure is superb, with Dates, Authorship, Audience, Purposes, Literary Genre, etc. for each book. Also, he has an excellent Commentary for each book; brief enough to be read quickly, but enough "meat" to get the understanding. And with the understanding of "what it meant" to those living back "then," he then proceeds to the Application and, after all, one must know what it "says" before one can understand how it "applies"! There are also some excellent "Questions" at the end of each chapter to ponder. Thanks Dr. Blomberg for such a well-researched book with all the "current journal articles" and finally, "additional books" in a "Select Bibliography" with commentaries categorized as: "Advanced, Intermediate, and Introductory" for further study.

This book is Christ-centered throughout. And the crucial point that Dr. Blomberg clearly believes and says well, is that Jesus is the Son of God, the Savior of the world!

Dr. Blomberg often summarizes those thorny, controversial passages. Of course, some "theology" will be debated until the end of time, but he is often "balanced" in his approach concerning those difficult texts, and is always "fair". Buy this book, I assure you that you will not be disappointed! Perhaps an overstatement, but this book could very well surpass the current "Standard" Introductions to the New Testament such as Guthrie's and Kummel's (at least from Pentecost to Patmos, or Acts through Revelation) due to the excellent current research. (Dr. Blomberg is more in line with Guthrie, i.e., to his credit, he is "conservative.") I believe this book deserves to be in every "theological school" and seminary in the country! And ministry students would be wise to obtain a copy for their personal library. I found it to one of the best books I've ever read and wish it a wide circulation!

Summary Overview of the Epistles,Acts, and Revelation
By William R. Bullerman
Craig Blomberg is one of the best New Testament authors that I have come across in the last 10 years. I have his books on the Parables, the Gospels, and the Gospels as History. He is solid, reliable, an excellent communicator and gives you your money's worth.

This book is an excellent book to use to get the flavor of a book and its background. He also puts in some light commentary. It is a bit better than a single volume commentary of the New Testament because he doesn't break everything out in a section. The background and occasion are being discussed throughout his coverage of each book. As he hits key passages, he explains what they mean without going into a lot of detail.

This is a summary work. It is not a real detailed coverage of finer points of exegesis. You will need the single volumes on the books of interest to get that depth. However, to get the flow and direction of the author's intent and communication and arguments, this is an excellent work. I am teaching books of the New Testament and have found it very illuminating and helpful as a foundation for more detailed study. For the average teacher (read, not a PhD in New Testament), I think you will find this book very useful.

Quality Survey of Acts through Revelation
By Michael C. Boling
The book of Acts, the Pauline Epistles, I and 2 Peter, Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation form the majority of the New Testament books of the Bible. Thus, it is vital to understand what these books are saying, their context, who the authors of these books are, why these books were written and to whom, as well as a number of other vital background information necessary to properly interpret what God is saying to His people in these books. A quality New Testament Commentary can oven serve the needed purpose of providing the student of Scripture with a solid overview of the content and purpose of the books its discusses. Dr. Craig Blomberg’s book, From Pentecost to Patmos: An Introduction to Acts through Revelation stands as one of those much needed quality New Testament surveys.

Blomberg takes his experience as a professor to the written page, providing the reader with a New Testament commentary that focuses on “surveying the actual structure and contents of each book, the main points in each section, the distinctive exegetical cruxes, and several key items for contemporary application.” His purpose in focusing on such elements is again based on his experience in the Seminary classroom, taking the areas he knows are important for understanding the New Testament books he discusses in an effort to provide the reader with the needed foundation for examining these texts. His underlying approach is really to give the reader who may not be able to sit in a Seminary classroom, the ability to exegete Acts through Revelation in a sound biblically based manner as well as a quite thorough background of just what is being discussed in these books and why it even matters.

The format of this book is very systematic in its structure with a consistent pattern of discussion found in relation to Acts through Revelation. Blomberg begins with a few opening comments on the particular book being focused on in the respective chapters, followed by a discussion of who the author was (if known), the date the book was penned, the audience of the book, the purpose or purposes of why the book was written, the genre and structure of the book, any particular issues of textual criticism or non-biblical sources of importance, any chronological matters such as for the book of Acts, questions for additional study and review, followed by his commentary.

Blomberg also provides the reader with a number of excellent resources throughout the book to include relevant maps, charts, excellent footnotes filled with additional study material, and solid discussion questions at various points in the commentary that help the reader engage the text and that provide that much needed additional food for thought so often missing from many Bible Surveys.

One particular section I really enjoyed was the overview of the life and ministry of the Apostle Paul. While there certainly have been a number of quality books written on Paul, his life and ministry, nevertheless, Blomberg’s overview of Paul is equally useful. His discussion of Paul provides an excellent introduction to the discussion and overview of the Pauline Epistles that come immediately after that particular chapter. I firmly believe that many people truly do not understand this amazing individual called the Apostle Paul, let alone his life leading up to his entrance in the book of Acts. That lack of understanding of Paul’s background, his theological education, who he studied under, and any number of other important elements that comprised who Paul was, can greatly impact how one views his Epistles. In that regard, Blomberg provides the reader with excellent background information as to who Paul was prior to becoming the Apostle Paul as well as the impact this man had by the grace of God both in the ancient world as well as today. I also found the overview of the form and structure of an epistle to be quite fascinating. Given that was the method Paul used in writing his letters, it is certainly useful to have an understanding of how such a letter is put together. Certainly such a topic is what one might describe as “nerdy” material, but it is important nonetheless.

Overall, I found this survey of Acts through Revelation to be insightful, scholarly yet approachable for the non-scholar, replete with valuable information, and very well written. It certainly could find its way into any Bible College or Seminary curriculum and as a follow on volume to Blomberg’s previous effort, Jesus and the Gospels, provides the reader with a solid compendium on the entirety of the New Testament, truly useful tools for scholar and layman alike. Those who take the time to work through this solid biblical survey will find their time well spent and they will come away with a much better understanding of what Acts through Revelation are all about.

Coming Home
By Thomas J. Burns
Karl Barth, perhaps more than his peers, understood the Biblical sense of "covenant" and the serious methodological flaw of glossing over the history of Israel in the work of Christian theology. For serious students of the Scriptures who share these sentiments, the New American Commentary is a worthy academic and theological entry into the thrust of both Hebrew and Christian canons. David M. Howard, Ph.D., associate professor of Old Testament at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, has produced this 400-page study of the Book of Joshua, a scriptural text about which most of us know a great deal about a very little portion of the work.

The importance of Joshua in the scriptural canon cannot be overstated. If in the course of history the text of Obadiah, for example, had been tragically lost, the dynamism of the covenant would still have been conveyed in the Hebrew Canon. The Book of Joshua, on the other hand, is an historical and theological lynchpin to the history of the Covenant. The Pentateuch texts, the five books prior to Joshua, were books of promise: the reward of faithful adherence to the Law and the possession of a land delivered by God as a perpetual inheritance. The Pentateuch had promised these things: Joshua is the story of the Pentateuch's fulfillment. Without Joshua, the Pentateuch's vision of the future is as lame as that of, say, Marxism.

The first dozen chapters of Joshua describe the takeover of Canaan and contain the vignettes we are most familiar with: the walls of Jericho tumbling down, the courage and faith of Rahab the prostitute in sheltering the spies, etc. The second dozen chapters are perhaps less read and thus less well known because of the technical style involved in precise land measurement and allotments to the various tribes.

Howard traces the continuing ventures under Moses' hand-picked successor Joshua, and the linguistic and narrative segue between this work and the preceding Deuteronomy is virtually seamless. Much of this continuity may be due to the probability that in terms of authorship, the Book of Joshua, like Deuteronomy, owes its existence to Deuternomic sources, one of the four discernible sources traditions in the historical books. Moses having died at the conclusion of Deuteronomy, this work begins with Joshua actually leading the Israelites across the Jordan River in a scene nearly parallel to the crossing of the Red Sea forty years earlier. Having enshrined the Tabernacle and circumcised this new generation of Israelites, Joshua turns to the task of conquest.

What is troubling for readers of the Book of Joshua--as with the Pentateuch itself for that matter--is the seeming ruthlessness of God who commands Joshua's armies to destroy the Canaanites [an umbrella term for numerous kingdoms and cities of the region] to the last man, woman, and child. Like other Biblical commentators, Howard offers his explanations in an excursus [184ff] which, broadly speaking, suggests primarily that the Canaanites are being punished post facto for generations of evil including child sacrifice, with the attendant purposes of emphasizing Israel's need for cleanness and obedience to the Law, and God's desire that Israel understand the land is totally theirs, as His gift. Howard's intentions are good; whether they are convincing to the reader is probably a personal matter of value and belief.

In truth only a handful of battles are recounted, and Israel lost one of them at the city of Ai in punishment for violating the Lord's prohibition against looting. Oddly, despite the divine command of total population destruction the Israelites seemed to have made some accommodations with wily natives--indentured slavery of a sort. Overall the impression one gets is that the conquest went smoothly, with limited casualties, under the direction of the Lord as commander-in-chief, as in the Jericho campaign. Howard estimates the campaign as a five year effort. [273n]

Chapter 13 marks a major division of the Book of Joshua. Howard observes correctly that the optimistic tenor of the previous chapters may have been somewhat overstated [295]. Joshua himself observes in 13:1 that large portions of the land remained unconquered. The main thrust of the second half of the Book is the division of the Promised Land and its allotment to the nine and on-half tribes without designated territory. [Moses, it may be recalled, had apportioned some land east of the Jordan to parts of three tribes.] This portion of the work is more detailed and less glamorous, but Howard's commentary goes a long way toward clarifying its importance. He notes the exactitude of the surveyor's efforts and descriptions, as well as the problem of future resistance, since some tribes were allotted portions that would prove too hard to capture.

Howard does his best to balance some theological inconsistencies in the text itself. On the one land, the Book goes to pains to show that each tribe's land allotment was made by the direct intervention of God. On the other hand, several tribes--Judah, most notably--did very well in terms of the quality of the land they received, while others, like Dan, were never able to even settle their land but moved elsewhere. Howard notes that the distribution seems to favor certain tribes for a variety of reasons reaching back to Genesis. On the other hand, Joshua himself was open to special situations with Caleb and others regarding land arrangements, and he made provision for Levite cities and the so-called cities of sanctuary for accused murderers. From both the Biblical text itself and Howard's commentary, Joshua does little wrong. At the end of the work the author[s] refer to him with the title applied to Moses, "the Servant of the Lord."

Howard himself is highly conversant with recent Biblical scholarship of the Evangelical tradition, and he is successful in producing a smooth reading commentary while providing the technician with an oasis of sources. At minimum, a thorough reading of the Pentateuch is a prerequisite for this work, preferably with a mainstream commentary.

I Believe in the Promised Land
By Dr. Marc Axelrod
David Howard does a great job expounding the book of Joshua and emphasizing its theological message. This is exactly the kind of commentary I look for when I'm preparing a sermon. Howard comes to conservative evangelical conclusions throughout the book, beginning with the introduction. He believes the book of Joshua was written no later than the time of David and probably earlier. He believes that the Exodus happened in 1446 BC and that the events in Joshua occur around 1400 BC and later.

Howard also rejects the notion that Joshua should be grouped with the first five books of the Old Testament, noting that Joshua should be considered a the first of the Former Prophets. He contends that the central message of the book is Israel's inheritance of the land in fulfillment of God's covenant promises.

Howard highlights the emphasis on obedience to God's word in Joshua chapter one. He concludes that the emphasis on prosperity and success in verses 7 and 8 refer not so much to financial success as it does to success in life generally speaking.

Howard also concludes that while it was wrong for Rahab to lie in chapter two, what she should have done instead is less certain. He dismisses the idea that God blessed her decision to lie about the spies, but that God overlooked and forgave this so that she is remembered more for her faith than for her lie (Hebrews 11).

There is also an extended discussion of the parting of the waters of the Jordan River. This confirms to the community that God is with Joshua in the same way He was with Moses.

Howard also discusses the identity of the commander of the Lord's army in Joshua 5. He believes that this commander is more than just an angel, but that he is unlikely to be an theophany of Yahweh, since he is distinguished from Yahweh. Howard is unsure about the idea that the commander is to be identified with the Angel of the Lord, but he doesn't get any more specific than this.

He also discusses the important of the holy character of God, and of the need for the land to be cleansed. The gross sin of the Canaanites called for them to be devoted to the Lord in destruction. This is hard for the modern reader, but it emphasizes that God is a holy God and that He only puts up with flagrant disobedience for so long.

Howard notes that we see this again in Joshua 7 with the judgment on Achan. By disobeying the command to devote the possessions of Ai to the Lord, he too displayed a flagrant disregard for God's holy character. God does not play favorites.

Howard notes how God's land promises come true in chapters 8-10. There is a lengthy discussion of whether or not the sun and moon literally stood still for nearly a day. After considering most of the possibilities, Howard surprisingly concludes that it is poetic language: The sun and the moon stood still in awe of what the Lord had done for Israel.

Many readers are bored with the land assignments described in chapters 12-21, but Howard says that this represents the heart of the book. This is where you see God's promises to His people coming true: City by city, wadi by wadi, town by town. As these places are assigned one by one to the children of Israel, we see the glorious unfolding and fulfilling of God's covenant blessings to His people. It wouldn't have been boring to them! They had been waiting for this all their lives!

Chapters 22-24 contain some parting words from Joshua to his people.

This was a great exposition of Joshua. The strength of the commentary is that Howard gets it. He understands the message of the book and drives it home clearly and forcefully.

The weakness of the book is that it is naive about inter and intratextual issues. There are so many places in Joshua where there are repetitions (then the land had rest from war) that there needed to be more discussion about literary theories. Howard rejects the JEDP theory of composition, as well as the idea of a Deuteronomist historian, but I would have liked a tad more discussion on the composition of the book.

But other wise, this is definitely a terrific commentary and I recommend it to all pastors and theological teachers.

Solid Conservative Commentary
By D. E WARD
Howard's commentary gives thorough coverage of the book of Joshua. Like other volumes in this series, it upholds the historicity of the biblical account. Howard interacts with a number of other commentators on the book of Joshua, including Boling, Butler, Goslinga, Hess, Nelson, Soggin, and Woudstra.

This commentary has proved to be very helpful for a small group study on Joshua in which I participated. I especially appreciated (1) the discussion of different options for the dates of the exodus and conquest, including reference to the work of archaeologist Bryant Wood and his colleagues, (2) the discussion of the ethical issues raised by Rahab's failure to tell the truth in order to protect the Israelite spies; (3) the discussion of the identity of the commander of the Lord's army in Joshua 5; (4) the discussion of different ways to understand the "sun standing still" in Joshua 10; (5) the wealth of information given on the places in the boundary and town lists of chapters 13-21; (6) the extensive references to relevant verses from other books of the Bible.

Keep at it, Eugene!
By Brett Williams
To be vitally human there are a few authors one must read - Shakespeare, Plato, Rousseau, Alan Bloom and Eugene Hecht. With only limited exaggeration - notable among man's achievements is Hecht's new 4th edition of Optics. The first edition was the central (and only) text assigned in junior year optics for physics majors at many universities in the 1980's. As a near adolescent I was pleased by expert writing and well delivered humor in those far off years of college life.
The wonders of electromagnetics - which leads to everything in our modern age of electronics, radar, telescopes and computers - is beautifully clarified with clear pictures, concise description and completing examples in this new edition.
I hope Hecht lives to be a thousand such that the hundredth edition of Optics can enlighten people in the 31st century with as much joy and fascination as his 4th edition does today.
After so many years away I find Hecht there again to help me, not this time to peak inside the mind of nature but to make a living, and do so with added pleasure, knowing Hecht continues to improve the nearly perfect.

OK textbook, could have been better
By Joey Pittman
I used this textbook for an introductory optics course. It was an average book. There weren't any examples in the core of the text, but fortunately the author did include worked solutions in the appendix for some of the end-of-chapter problems, which I used as examples to work from. Most of the questions that were answered were the easier ones, that anybody halfway intelligent should be able to figure out.

On the plus side, there were lots of equations and lots of description to help learn the material. Some sections were better than others. The sections on mirrors and lenses, for example, were wonderful; I never understood that stuff in high school, and Hecht made it all clear. The tables he had for the different types of lenses/mirrors and their properties were great. An example of a poor section was that on diffraction; I had no clue what he was talking about.

The book is a bit expensive, but overall it is alright; certainly better than some of the other books I used during my degree!

Great in combination with the Schaum's outline by the same author
By calvinnme
If this book had to stand on its own I'd say it is a failure. The author is very good about explaining concepts. For example, he tries to make practical sense out of reflection, refraction, and the Fresnel equations via conversational examples in nature such as the "mirages" you see on highways in the hot summertime. Also, his derivations are quite detailed and complete. However, he works very few numerical examples. He just expects you to do so in the exercises with no demonstration by him on how to do it. As someone has previously mentioned, the subject of Fourier optics is spread all over the book in a completely disorganized manner.

So why am I giving it four stars? Because, unbelievably, it is the best optics textbook out there for those of us seeking an academic treatment and not some popular mechanics text. Also, the author has written an outstanding Schaum's outline, Schaum's Outline of Optics, that goes hand in hand with this book. They complement each other perfectly. Simply read a chapter of this book, go to the corresponding chapter in the Schaum's outline, and there the same author shows practical problems and their solutions.

If the author ever writes another edition of this text it would be great if he folded in some of the practicality of his Schaum's outline into this very complete but unpractical text.

Been There - Done That
By Jessie M. Ashby
Stephen Bly is able to bring me to tears either with laughter or

pathos. How he can write so believably about females amazes me.

Having lived with school teachers and hearing their discussions

at holiday meals and family get togethers Develyn and her love

for her students mirrors several of the elementary teachers of

my various family members. But Mr. Bly doesn't stop with

believable characters, instead he keeps me reading to all hours

of the day and night to see what kind of "fix" his characters

will wind up in next.

Delaney perhaps was the least believable of the bunch since

most modern fillies would have solved the dilemma of pregnant

or not in the length of time it took to get to a pharmacy, get

back home and do the test. Then before they stewed for several

weeks would have repeated the test. However, the anguish Delaney

went through and the treatment of her mother throughout the

whole ordeal of pregnant or not parallels well with the relationship existing between daughters and mothers witnessed

in my own experience. With four sisters and myself and numerous

daughters the yin and yang of rearing girls does see-saw endlessly and never seems to be completely resolved with the

realization that both mothers and daughters can truly settle

down to a permanent and lasting peace of simply loving one

another undeservably/unreservably.

Cooper Tallon? What can I say except could we clone a few of

him for the widows of Texas. On the other hand I believe the

Hunter Burkes of the world may have been cloned already. Casey

Cree-Ryder's Jackson is every mother's wish for her daughters.

Which leads back to the fact that Stephen Bly does men quite

well also.

A wonderful tale of Wyoming and the yen most of us have of re-

visiting the wonderful times of our youth and resolving the

heartaches of our middle or senior seasons of life. Made me

want to revist the land of blue skys, wide open spaces and

typical Western people, culture and terrain.

Fantastic! Believable. Life Changing
By Alyice Edrich
I was given Wish I'd Known you Tears Ago as a gift. I read the book in one day...it's that good!

It's about a woman who basically runs to a place she loved as a little girl to rediscover herself. Towards the end of her journey she invites her college-aged daughter to join her in hopes of mending broken fences, and building a new bond.

Many strange things happen during the last days of summer that changes the woman's life forever...Will it be for the best? You'll have to read the book to find out.

One thing I can say is that you'll walk away with a few personal revelations of your own.

terrific ranch contemporary tale
By A Customer
Indiana school-teacher Develyn Worrell feels weary so she resolves to seek some refreshing changes during her summer vacation. When she was a child Devy spent time in Wyoming and to this day as a mother of an adult child she considers it was amongst one of the best of times in her childhood. Devy concludes that she should return to that Wyoming serene time she has not found in recent years.

However, the summer of her contentment does not work out quite the way Devy envisioned it as she learns you cannot go back as that dream place is not the same because you are not the same. Still she finds solace until her daughter Hurricane Dee arrives at the same time a close older friend suffers a heart attack. Other personal intrusions also occur, but the steadfast, calm and contentment she finds in her friendship with cowboy Cooper Tallon helps Devy through crisis after crisis almost as much as her faith in God enables her to help others like crazy Casey Cree ride out storms. Her faith also assists her in looking inside her heart to see a quiet kind cowboy beats there too.

The third Horse Dreams tale (see MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN and THE MUSTANG BREAKER) is a terrific ranch contemporary tale that stars a wonderful heroine who holds the character driven story line together. The eccentric support cast augments Devy's summer of contentment as she seeks and finds peace in spite of being at the center of chaos caused by her nurturing relationships with others. Everyone needs a Cooper (apt name for a quiet supportive cowboy) as his caring serves as a respite for Devy. Stephen Bly provides a warm inspirational character study of a woman who learns solace is found in the heart and soul of a person.
